Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory

Re: Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory
Not to defend his words (I'd rather him shut up myself), but Robertson still does a lot of good. He has that "flying hospital" that's something like a 747 converted into a hospital inside where they fly into 3rd world countries to fix cleft palates for children, do surgeries, give medicine and such. He certainly gives food to the starving and does all sorts of great humanitarian works. So given that, I wouldn't say that he's the worst example of a Christian minister. That would probably go to the infamously known Reverend "God hates fags" Phelps that somebody mentioned earlier who disrupt soldiers' burials and preach hate.
My mom would watch the 700 Club nearly every morning, so while I was still living at home up until 10 years ago I'd seen a lot of that show. When I was a kid, I'd just wonder if I could stack small books on his shelf-like eyebrows. When I was going to college, I'd catch a bit of it in the mornings. The only really interesting part is the first part where they show world news. They'd show a lot more of news coverage on stuff like China firing a missile over Taiwan, Kim Jung Il shenanigans, or the political climate in Africa that is only glossed over with regular news. I'd read about stuff on AP and Reuters and wonder why the news wasn't showing more world news, but I'd see it being covered on that show. The news in the United States doesn't cover the goings-on in other countries, unless there's some catastrophe (like in Haiti). Americans' knowledge of the rest of the world is abyssal and the news coverage of the world is partly to blame. I'd have to give the 700 Club credit for their news coverage at least.
For the rest of the program, I'd just leave the room. As a Christian myself, it seems rather unsettling to see something so formulaic, as if they're manufacturing the Holy Spirit to fill their time slot. Especially when they'd close their eyes and somehow prophesy about random people getting healed at that moment. It strikes me as pretty bizarre.
So while Robertson does do a lot of good for the world (although he should have flown his hospital into Haiti instead of judging them and pissing them off), he doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut. It seems that as he's getting older, he's getting worse. If he has President Bush and President Obama telling him to basically shut up, that's a good sign. Calling for the assassination of Hugo Chavez, judging those in New Olreans and now in Haiti... He's an embarrassment to not only Christians, but Americans in general.

Re: Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory
Calling for the assassination of Hugo Chavez was indeed stupid. This kind of thing must be done subtly!

Re: Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory
Well, to be fair, he didn't specifically "call for the assassination of Hugo Chavez." That would be more like, "We ought to assassinate Chavez!" I think his words were more along the line of saying that it is possible for the CIA to just take him out so that he wouldn't be a problem. But if we did that, then there'd be one less ass for Obama to kiss, I guess.

Re: Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory
I just watched a clip on Youtube. He said, "We really oughta go ahead and do it." I guess I was right the first time---he did call for the assassination. "We have the ability to take him out and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability." A bit out of bounds for his TV program, I think.

Re: Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory
My theory: Haitians made a pact with the devil, and now the devil repays them with Pat Robertson.
But it's unlikely, it would be too cruel...
Serious question: if Robertson is a philanthropist and church leader, did he and his organizations help Haitian people after the earthquake?

Re: Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory
Pat Robertson was walking along the street one day and he came across a little boy with a box of kittens. Pat peered into the box, and said, "Son, those are the cutest little kitties I have ever seen. What kind are they?"
"These are Christian kittens," the little boy replied.
Pat chuckled and went on his way.
A week later, he found himself on the same street, this time chatting up Ann Coulter, when he saw the same little boy with the same box of kittens. Hoping to score some points with her, he said, "Ann, go ask that little boy what kind of kittens those are."
She did, and the boy replied, "These are atheist kittens."
Ann looked shocked, and looked back at Pat in horror. Pat asked the boy, "What do you mean, atheist kittens? Last week you told me these kittens were Christian!"
"They were," replied the boy. "But then their eyes opened."

I wish more people would illustrate their points using kittens. Maybe then I'd understand this whole recession thing better.

Re: Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory
Why is the kid sitting in the street with a box of infant kittens? Was he lying in wait for Pat Robertson and needed a prop to get a dig in? Man, what a douche.

Re: Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory
That story couldn't have happened because Pat Robertson would have taken the kittens to sell for their meat, so as to teach the kid a lesson about what it is to be a red-blooded American.
Re: Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory
Or he would have killed a kitten each time someone asked him something about masturbation.

Re: Pat Robertson's special Hatian theory
I couldn't have said it better Greg. I'm not an atheist and I'll never be one, and yes I think Pat Robertson is a hypocritical man, but so am I-that is why we both need the Grace of God. And that is what we should be living examples of when a disaster like this happens.greg wrote:Not to defend his words (I'd rather him shut up myself), but Robertson still does a lot of good. Yeah, Dave. Josh has a point. Are you having another huge personal crisis or something? You said a few days ago that you'd become an atheist, now you're saying you'll never be one. You're switching your theistic philosophy faster than you switch game systems. You're like a tree blowing back and forth in the wind. What the heck?

I think one of those folks came to a regional college lately to talk about her work. The blurb mentioned giving a tribe a written language, introducing them to the Good Book, but nothing about preserving the culture before it became cookie-cutter third-world Christiandom Lite.Koa Zo wrote:And fuck opportunistic missionary missions intended to strip indigenous people's of their cultures.

Rather interesting official statement:

Reading between the lines, Robertson's opinions seem tolerated because he funds the charity work of the sane and altruistic part of his organization, and the career of the other part.

Well, I wonder how he explains Chile's massive earthquake? They're a Christian nation, after all.
