It's embarassing, but i like most of the titles named here (yes, including Night Raid and XII stag, let's not even talk about Gun and Frontier and Gekirindan...Taito shmups, thus automatically ace!).

...No, it's not embarassing

I've always enjoyed playing Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth. I've seen general dislike for it here, but I still love it.

I think it's the game that made me a shmup fan. :)
...I need a weapon.

Vapor Trail. The game is pretty mediocre, and it gets lambasted sometimes, but it's still fun to play, and I enjoy the garbled voice samples.

Ok, I will chime in with some agreements:

Gun Frontier
Gekirinden

Especially Gekirinden--must be the art design or the time travel stuff or something--

Actually, I like a lot of shitty shooters. Seems like all that has come to my mind has been mentioned.

Gekirindan - the music, the graphics, the tatsujin/truxton homages
Metal Black - the music, the graphics, the oldschool cheapness
Curse - no idea, this game is sweet though :)
Vapor Trail - this game only has one real in-game song, but it's pretty freaking awesome (MD version that is), gameplay is okay
Gun Frontier - atmosphere, weirdness
Sol-Deace/Sol-Feace - I'm as puzzled as you guys are, I think this is one hell of a solid and action packed shooter. Impressive!

EDIT:

Blast Wind and Metal Black are considered shitty!?

Damn, sign me up for those guilty pleasures. IMO those are two of the best shmups on the Saturn. :?

Let's not forget "Fai-yaaaa!" when you hit the Hug Launcher button. Where did Takumi come up with the name for that weapon?

Gekirindan: Actually, it's not that bad. Taito went for an old-school shooter like the stuff Toaplan had them publish, and that's pretty much what they got- albeit with some nice F3-system graphic candy ladled on generously.

Metal Black: The weird atmosphere and the BGM (especially some of the darker tracks like the mothership theme, Boss 5's "Phantasm"and the final boss theme). "Dual Moon" and the ending credits music "Non-Fiction" (also used in Bonus Stage 2) rock.

Twin Cobra II: Similar story to Gekirindan, and Takumi's first game.

Vapor Trail: One stage BGM track? That's it? But anyway- it's a really, really good piece of BGM, and the bosses have their own themes. "I can't hold it!" and "Don't allow it to escape!" are classics. BTW, what is the voice saying right after you kill the first boss? Thanks to the garbled speech it sounds like "Bastard!" but I think it's "Nice job".
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I dunno, but the game does say 'shoot the core' which is pretty cool.

I found Mad Shark to be pretty enjoyable, even though it's a blatant Raiden clone.

Same goes for 1945K III, which is an even crappier Strikers clone.

Speaking of it, I think I'm the only die-hard Z-Out fan on this board. I don't know why, actually. It might be too little exposure to the crowd or the fact that the brilliance of its design doesn't show until you start playing it a lot (!). Or maybe I'm just out of my mind.
I guess it's both things. Too little exposure and the first levels being kind of unspectacular.

I like Gekiridan. I actually like it a lot.

And if Blast Wind is considered shitty, you can add me to the list of people who find it to be one of the finest shmups made for the Saturn.

Oh, I like Gyrodine. At least the MSX version, I always liked that game, I got really surprised when I found out that this game is hated by nearly everyone.

..I like XII Stag and Hotdog Storm too...

I should add that my ultimate guilty pleasure is... hentai shooters...
Divine Sealing must be one of the worst shooters I have ever played, but I kept playing it on an emulator for hours... hoping to see the stage 4 nudity...
Likewise, countless hours wasted away in Sentimental Shooting..damn 90-degrees lasers...

I know... it's such a difficult game, but not due to good design... I just find it's cheap as Hell.... then I found out that if you press A+B+C repeatedly you can skip to the end of level nudie scenes 8)

By about level four I just went blind from the garrish use of color. It was like I was having flashbacks, except (1) I wasn't alive in the 60s and (2) never dropped so that was definitely unsettling. Couple that with how cheap the game is and it went on ebay within a week of its entry into my collection.

I... acquired... Sentimental Shooting off of Suprnova last summer, not knowing what it was. Quite a challenging game, if you play for Omake pics on hard. I never actually got any of them...

I think we seriously need to consider changing the shmup community "status quo opinion" of Sol-Feace/Sol-Deace. 8) I love it. Played it to death on my Sega CD and never understood why it gets slammed so much. It still holds up well to other 8/16 bit era stuff. Nice fluid movement, good weapon power-up system that doesn't totally cripple you if you die once (looking at you, Gradius). Independent aiming of the top and bottom weapons is nice. Music is pretty good. Levels are generic and the game isn't anything groundbreaking, but it's far from bad.

As for other guilty pleasures... I'd probably say Shienryu - another game that stands out in no area, but isn't terribly bad at anything either. And from the more recent era, I find the Psyvariar series to be quite underrated in general.

I don't think either Sol Deace or Shineryu are bad games. I personally find Sol Deace to be pretty enjoyable, and Shienryu to be amazingly good. (It just missed entering my top 25 list)

Section Z. i just like the concept of being able to fire in reverse. it was like Bangaioh, but nowhere near as godly as Bangaioh, but STILL a semi-decent shmup IMO.

Off-topic, but since a few people mentioned Gekirindan, does anyone know how in the hell to survive the opening part of level five, with the retracting platforms containing three multi-directional cannons each? I just can't destroy them fast enough.

R-Type Final with the invincibility code on.

I think the game is more fun to play for score that way, or I can relax and just take in the understated narrative and atmosphere.
