Teh waifu & I had a date night tonight and went and saw Ponyo. Excellent movie. Yes, certainly geared toward a younger crowd, but lacked nothing in regards to cliche Miazaki-isms (not a bad thing):

- Humans ruining nature
- Magical stuff
- Feminism (not in a bad way but in a "showing women to be strong" way. Mom was such a subject in this film)

And I thought the voice inflection of the actors was excellent. Based on other JP voice actors, I'd say they got pretty dang close as you can get while still speaking English.

^^ Ever since Spirited Away came out, I find all the new dubs (and redubs of previous works) of Miyazaki's movies to be actually pretty good. Patrick Stewart as Lord Yuba and Cary Elwes as the Baron are the win.

Cute little film. The story kind of reminded me of (the vastly superior) The Snowman.

Saw this in the theaters today. The visuals really are jaw-dropping and at the credits I felt like a bundle of joy as the Totoro-like theme song played. Not bad at all! Rather enjoyed the score, too, it meshed well with the vibrant animation. I liked how a lot of the landscapes had a colored pencil look to them, thought it contrasted well with all the water.

I have heard that Miyazaki would like to do one more project, beyond Ponyo. I will probably go to see it, hoping it is better than Earthsea...

I thought every film since Mononoke was his last project. I heard that it was only because of the death of Yoshifumi Kondo (Whisper of the heart) that he's continued to make films, finding no one else worthy to be his successor.

I heard the original Japanese theme song and loved it.

Then I heard the English version and was all :|.

Still really want to go see this, though.

I was all like :o :( :? :| when the credits rolled, until the "We made this" bit came up

It was kind of like if Studio Ghibli made "The Little Mermaid" from the perspective of Bil Keane :| It felt very "kids are ADORABLE!" when it wasn't all cool ocean effects. If it cut down on how much "this is how we make ramen noodles," I'd be happier with the movie, but it was alright.

Yes, he's a pretty renowned person these days - we met in a couple of occasions.

Uhm, is he Gualtiero/Shito? I would be VERY surprised if he wouldn't. I am going to watch the movie tomorrow, with all likeliness, but I'd get the italian version at some point, as I'd rather watch a very well dubbed movie than getting headaches with sub-titles...

I must be getting old or something, that did absolutely nothing for me other than make me wonder why anyone would associate a film for 5 year olds with a rap track. That and I must be missing the significance.

most certainly nowhere near ghibli's best.

this is not mononoke, spirited away, porco rosso, etc -- this is a little kid's movie with some nice animation.

i don't regret seeing it, however. can't remember the last time i saw animation on the big screen.

I'm usually pumped about anything cartoons/anime but I've been iffy on some of disney's dubs so I was going to wait for the DVD... what a stupid idea that was - I should see this in the theaters while I can. Regardless, if anyone here hasn't seen Nausicaa, do so now (Mushihimesama fans will especially love it)!!! Here is a spoiler filled trailer that totally kicks

Just got back from the theater. I thought it was great from start to finish.

Y'know, aside from that abominable remix of the theme song.

I watched Lupin III Castle of Cagliostro like a week ago and I think that's my favorite of Miyazaki, even though it's not a Ghibli thing... honestly it might be one of my favorite animated films ever. It was just so badass. Gotta watch it in 720p dudes.

according to metacritic,it's the 9th highest reviewed movie of 2009:
http://www.metacritic.com/film/awards/

and besides Avatar and Up, it's the only one I know anything about. I guess mainstream movies mainly suck.

Fantastic Mr. Fox was good. I never got around to seeing The Road (mostly because I was worried about the book to movie adaptation), but it was out of the theatres before I started having a change of heart.
