Re: Raystorm HD - Xbox Live Arcade
This looks impressive. Now we need G.Rev to do Border Down HD. That shot of the city scene just gave me a huge BD Stage 1 flashback. If G.Rev were hired to make this version of RayStorm, I wouldn't be surprised.
An option to turn auto-centering off would be great.

Re: Raystorm HD - Xbox Live Arcade
If you've played Under Defeat, Raystorm uses a similar angled-overhead perspective, which takes getting used to in order to dodge patterns effectively. That's probably the biggest point of contention about RS. Otherwise it plays like Rayforce, with three major differences: 1) you can lock onto enemies on any plane, not just below you. 2) you get a recharging bomb. 3) the optional new RG-02 ship plays nothing like the classic RG-01, other than the basic lock-on mechanic.bucklemyshoe wrote:I never played Raystorm or Crisis.

I've never played Rayforce.
If I had even known it existed I would have included it in my original question.

Re: Raystorm HD - Xbox Live Arcade
In that case it's harder to say what Ray- is similar to, since it essentially started its own sub-style of "lock-on shooter." Think Xevious ground-bombing, only instead of individually destroying targets, you chain them together in a sequence of lock-ons before firing and forgetting, racking up higher multipliers for bigger chains. Play Rayforce in MAME for ten seconds and you'll have an idea of what RS is like, besides the Under Defeat perspective.
Rayforce is also known as Galactic Attack, Gunlock and Layer Section, on the off chance you've seen it under a different name.

if you ever plyed Kamui, you can get the feeling (more or less) of how Rayforce is... but i'd say kamui is more hectic.

Err, I know that. But, as already stated, this isn't a finished game. It makes sense that the developers would temporarily go with whatever they find most natural while it's a work-in-progress, then change it during the testing/polishing phase.StarCreator wrote:Err, it's standard to use A for confirm and B for cancel on all 360 games worldwide. Re: Raystorm HD - Xbox Live Arcade
Raystorm and Raycrisis still feel good nowadays when played on the PSP, a HD version for bigger screens should hold up well. Hope we eventually get Raycrisis HD too. Feel the Zuntata + G.Rev love!

Raycrisis is rather good. Raystorm is really good, but for some strange reason, I like RC better than RS, even though everyone says the opposite.bucklemyshoe wrote:I never played Raystorm or Crisis.

Rayforce tops them both though. Hands down.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Re: Raystorm HD - Xbox Live Arcade
IMO the series got a little worse at each new game
Rayforce is AWESOME, Raystorm is pretty good and Raycrisis is enjoyable.
Though I only played the PS1 version of Raycrisis, and I heard the Arcade version is far superior.
It's good news that Raystorm is getting the HD treatment even though I probably will never see this game. Raystorm really had some good graphics for that time, and it truly deserves an HD remake

Re: Raystorm HD - Xbox Live Arcade
I bought the Taito Legends 2 game just for Raystorm.
It's worth it.
I hope it does come to Wiiware, since I don't have a 360.

Not trying to pick on the Wii here but at this point I don't see why. The Wii-controller isn't exactly great for shmups and a major point of this port is the HD aspect...which the Wii just doesn't do. I don't think this is likely....cj iwakura wrote:I bought the Taito Legends 2 game just for Raystorm.

EDIT: I bought Taito Legends 2 just for Elevator Action Returns (to have a back-up to my Saturn copy). Then I realized it was a meh port so I found a second, still factory-sealed copy for Saturn for the archive.

Re: Raystorm HD - Xbox Live Arcade
The arcade version of RayCrisis has 2 player and the graphics seem a bit smoother. IINM, the arcade version is 60 FPS and PS1 may be 30 FPS. There's no music pause when a boss appears on the arcade one- when the music does pause on the PS1 port, it is kind of an immersion killer.

I hope they sort that annyoing bug with the enemy bullets where they track and move with the background.

Re: Raystorm HD - Xbox Live Arcade
you mean the first boss where the big lasers sometimes don't come out of the ship, but apparantly start in the air somewhere? Or please explainMills wrote:I hope they sort that annyoing bug with the enemy bullets where they track and move with the background.

lol- that sounds like Raiden 4 - though it's been awhile since I've played Raystorm I don't quite remember thatMills wrote:I hope they sort that annyoing bug with the enemy bullets where they track and move with the background.

Re: Raystorm HD - Xbox Live Arcade
I'm pretty sure it's no bug and it's intentional...just wondering who came up with that shitty idea.Mills wrote:The enemy bullets are bend from their path when the background moves.D wrote:you mean the first boss where the big lasers sometimes don't come out of the ship, but apparantly start in the air somewhere? No fixing involved here - just hoping whoever is reprogramming this remake drops that stupid "feature".

Milestone/Ultimate Shooting Collection used an interesting nunchuk/remote combo. Movement with the nunchuk, firing with the remote. It worked pretty well, but Shikigami 3's straight remote controls were a little easier.ZeetherKID77 wrote:There's an arcade stick and the Classic Controller for Wii.Zero Gunner wrote:Not trying to pick on the Wii here but at this point I don't see why. This setup is so awkward for me. The 'chuck feels to cheap to play these games well, imo.cj iwakura wrote:I bought the Taito Legends 2 game just for Raystorm.

Hell! Yes! Love the series and will buy instantly on release. Cool to see that this (of all titles) is getting an HD remake!
I can still remember getting RayStorm and RayCrisis new back in the day on the PlayStation, and I was not at all disappointed. RayStorm I had passed on for a while, but then I decided to get it and hoped it was still there; I was lucky the people in my area care more about dogshit EA games than shooters, or else it would have been long gone! RayCrisis, on the other hand, I bought on release after being pumped by the GameFan coverage on it. I still play them regularly (when I'm stateside) because they also included revised/updated/extra/alternate versions of each on the same disc (with slightly different features and graphics). Some good memories, too, playing them with family and friends.
If only G. Darius had its little-known revision on the same disc...

Re: Raystorm HD - Xbox Live Arcade
The Raystorm PCB is great with it's crisp CD-quality 44.1KHz stereo output if your candy cab can support it from the get-go. The loading times are instantaneous between stages. You even select the game to play on a single player control panel setup if that is all you have, otherwise it's best to activate 2 player option for that cool two-player co-op mode and more fun. ^_~
The Taito FX-1B board that RayStorm runs on is a precursor to the slighly more powerful Taito G-Net mobo iteration. ^_~
PC Engine Fan X! ^_~
