Tube Shooters
Re: Tube Shooters
Wow! I'd never even heard of Tempest Tubes but according to this reference http://www.answers.com/topic/tempest-tubes
it was an enhancement kit for the original arcade Tempest.
More will be revealed....

Re: Tube Shooters
The Atari Lynx version of S.T.U.N. Runner has the obligatory warp screens for completeness. It's just trying to execute them properly to warp to the higher waves that is a challenge unto itself...that's another story altogether. ^_~dave4shmups wrote:Tempest X3 is the most addictive PS1 shooting game that I've ever played, and I've played some great import PS1 shooters. It's just awesome! And, you can use the Puchi Carat dial controller with it, although that controller is pretty hard to find.
Also, if you get Atari Anthology, which came out for PC, PS2 and XBOX (and is backwards compatible with the 360) you can play Tempest Tubes, which has different stages from the arcade original, also contained in Atari Anthology.
Regarding S.T.U.N. Runner, I've read that the Lynx port does not allow the player to loop, or go upside down, so I don't know if that would be the best home port.

Re: Tube Shooters
So has anyone played Lattice 200 EC7 on the PSx?
I can't find any footage for it anywhere so not sure whether it's a tube shooter or not...
...Aha-got it now.
Lattice 200ec7 IS a tube shooter but it's it's a totally convex one where you're flying around the outside of a pipe.
Actually I've just played it for a bit and it's awesome. There's so much going on in it, and now it's on the list

Re: Tube Shooters
Just added GearToyGear to the list- it looks awesome but I've got to download so many packages to get it to play on my XP machine that I'm not sure yet.
Anyone else played it?

Wormhole on the Vectrex is a great Gyruss rip-off.

Also worth a mention is tube panic on arcade/mame (tho not all levels are tubes)

Aye- added Wormhole to the list, but I guess Tube Panic (in spite of the name) is, like you say not a pure tube shooter. Looks fun though!KidQuaalude wrote:Wormhole on the Vectrex is a great Gyruss rip-off.

Re: Tube Shooters
Wellllllll if you wanna get super picky then Tempest and its variants aren't pure tube shooters either. Neither is STUN Runner. I say Tube Panic is an honorary inductee.
My awesome contribution: There are tube sections in Star Goose!
EDIT: I guess Revolver 360 might almost qualify as a horizontal tube shooter

Re: Tube Shooters
This and Tempest 2000 are definitive tube shooters for me. NES port of Gyruss didn't hurt eitherPC Engine Fan X! wrote:Another cool tube shooter for the JPN PSX was Squaresoft's iS: internal section...unfortunately, it never did get a proper U.S. PSX release. Wooh- I guess your right. I'd completely forgotten that Tempest has those flat webs too, and it's certainly stayiong on the list so Tube Panic and Star Goose had better go on too.Drum wrote:Wellllllll if you wanna get super picky then Tempest and its variants aren't pure tube shooters either. Revolver 360 almost looks like an 3D tube shooter (?) but there's not really any circular motion.
Wonder if there's any isometric tube shooters anywhere too.

Re: Tube Shooters
I can't believe this thread is missing mention of SEWER SHARK.

Re: Tube Shooters
Tempest Tubes was once an unofficial hack. Like Namco with Ms. Pac-Man, Atari eventually approved of it and considered it official some years later.

Too bad Namco didn't approve Jr. Pac-Man. One of my favorite Pac games.Despatche wrote:Tempest Tubes was once an unofficial hack. Like Namco with Ms. Pac-Man, Atari eventually approved of it and considered it official some years later.
I think this is asking why Tempest is only listed for "Arc" and Tubes is listed for PC, PS2, and Xbox too.Despatche wrote:What is the logic behind this?mjclark wrote:Tempest, 1981 (Arc)

Nope- tis FPS not shmup and,EinhanderZwei wrote:What about Tunnel B1?
as for Sin and Punshment2, the same rules apply as for Omega Boost:
In a tube shooter your "ship" (or whatever it is that's firing) has a radial axis of motion.mjclark wrote:Never played it but it looks awesomeErik wrote:Would Omega Boost on PS1 apply as a "tube shooter"?![]()
However it also looks like it's straight line motion. In other words, if you move your directional input left (for example) then you move in a straight line whereas in a tube shooter if you move your directional input left you would move in a circular path clockwise.
Maybe someone with some applied maths could help us out here
Just cos it's a shooter in a tube doesn't mean it's a tube shooter (!)

Re: Tube Shooters
Omega Boost actually only has two stages set in tubes, btw. The others are all either open-space or ground-based. Control is the same in all, you're basically in a sphere - the tube levels just add forced forward scrolling.
Absolutely killer game.

I cannot get GearToyGear to run on XP though-I just get the "has encountered a problem" message but it looks rockin'.

I have XP as well and I got it to work. Have you installed the latest XNA framework?

Will try it on a different machine- is it any good then?

I used to love this as a kid in the arcade. iirc it had a sit down futuristic bike that you tilted left and right to manoeuvre. The graphics were a real eye opener at the time too.S.T.U.N. Runner, 1989 (Arc,Lynx,PS2)

Torus Trooper still is my fave Kenta Cho game.

Re: Tube Shooters
I remember when GearToyGear first released 1 to 2 years ago there was another indie game that looked almost identical that released about the same time. I cant remember its name but its commercial and on steam IIRC
Re: Tube Shooters
Finally got GearToyGear working on our new machine!!
It's actually fucking brilliant but really quite different from Torus Trooper in terms of gameplay.
Also, as well as being able to move around the circumference of the tube you can move into the middle of it, which kinda stretches our definition of Tube Shooters a bit.

Maybe he's confusing it with Audiosurf? I don't recall a game like that on Steam but, given how big it got, I could've missed it.mjclark wrote:Finally got GearToyGear working on our new machine!!

Web Wars on vectrex count? I believe it does, it's as close as you were getting to Tempest back in the day.
