I haven't seen any framerate issues in Outrun mode yet, but it does drop in a couple of places during Heart Attack mode. Specifically the frametate gets choppy for a few seconds during the first "keep passing cars" challenge, and hitches for a second when it loads up rival cars for a "beat that car" challenge.

Also, manual transmission is so easy in this game it's ridiculous. I'm usually useless at racing games in manual, but gear shift drifting is so much faster than a braking drift, and you don't have to shift down at any other time unless you crash.

Same thing could be said of the GBA release of Sega Arcade Gallery. Still have to downshift if you crash or if a CPU car/truck passes you up from behind causing your Ferarri to suddenly grind to a halt...lose valuable/precious seconds that way. It's possible to score 42,000,000+ points with 45 to 50 seconds left on the clock = lots of free bonus points at the end of the race once you cross the finish line. Of course, that's assuming that you play a perfect GBA Outrun gaming session without crashing and racing at maximum speed from start to finish. It's do-able. ^_~

you don't have to break to drift with automatic actually.... just lift off the gas and press down again.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I'm pretty sure that doesn't work at all. Just tried.

Also, the template for Goal A in OutRun Mode looks like a Moai.

Thinking about it, I may have been overstating the obvious. I was simply trying to point him in the right direction.

Bought this today. Had lots of great matches in multiplayer though mainly with a select few people, a lot of people kept leaving when they were losing. Right when me and a guy I had been battling with for the last parts of a race were doing a last turn to the finish line, the third player drifts right past us and wins, pretty funny.

The achievements seem well rounded and not that easy for a change. I'm mainly using the F40(tuned if possible, great drifting with gears)

Doesn't work. You have to break, then turn, then accelerate.

Anyway, I'm not going to bother with this game. It basically looks like a Dreamcast Initial D clone. Pass.

I checked on the Japanese PSN site and couldn't find any Outrun game to d/l yet. Perhaps wait a bit until SCEI uploads it (that's assuming if they ever do get around to doing so). ^_~

That is a very nice and sexy looking red Testarossa Ferrari. A very well paying job, preferably in the six figures or more, will allow you into the exclusive exotic supercars clientele group. The downside is that it attracts too much attention from the general public (not to mention the professional car thieves as well) and especially, those stupid enough to race against you in a shitty-ass lower horsepowered car. On the positive-side, it is a babe magnet indeed. The insurance rates on one isn't for the faint-hearted either. If you can afford an Ferrari or Lamborgini right on the spot at an exotic car dealership, you already know that insurance ain't a problem. ^_~

There is the cheaper alternative of renting them/test driving them to see if it is the perfect one for you before writing out that personal check for one. ^_~

anyone play the PS3 version yet? I have the 360 one but was wondering if the frame dips are in the PS3 as well.

I imagine they would if not worse.

I will also paypal the money if somebody gives me an account.
I will not do anything bad. I will delete the account from my system after the game works from my other accounts!

Got this (360) and its pretty cool despite the lack of extras and framerate issues. Well worth 800 points imo. 8)

This game is great. Makes me wonder what other awesome racing games I've missed out on over the years. If anybody is on the fence about this one, go ahead and buy it, it's awesome.

After a bit of practice I got 4:29 on goal B (Testarossa I think). I think the Heart Attack AAA achievement is a lot harder... blue cones + drifting =

the fastest route for time attack is right left right right right if I remember right, at least it is on the leaderboards. right left left left left is easy as well though. there is also a path for heart attack where you wont get any blue cones or even gates, I'm not sure which it was, I think it was bay area -> forest -> ice world -> goal D

I'm still playing the game online, the players are getting fewer though. would be nice to play some of you guys.

You are correct, thanks for the tip. That path made the AAA achievement pretty easy, actually.

It was a toss up between this and VOOT and I decided on buying this instead. It's actually a lot of fun, even though I don't have a steering wheel and probably never will. I don't care all that much about fastest times but the online competitive scene is pretty enjoyable and more importantly, the netcode is as well.

Some people absolutely beast me at this game, though. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Pretty much the only stages where I have common problems are the Canyon and Milkyway. I'm using manual transmission and drifting as well as dropping/upping gears as well. Is that all there is to it? I've never actually played an Outrun game before but the learning curve in this doesn't seem too steep, in comparison to Virtual On which is really up there.

I haven't raced any multiplayer games so I can't give any advice specifically about that. In Time Trial, though, the key to better times seems to be learning when to drift and when not to drift. At first I was drifting in almost every turn, which is really unnecessary (old Crazy Taxi habit, probably). Like those sections in between stages, you can just steer normally in those at top speed. Practicing in Time Trial would probably help you out in multiplayer races, I think.

And yes, Milky Way is a bitch. I usually go into the turns one gear below top gear to keep from crashing (like for Testarossa, shift down to 4th before the turn and then do a 4-3-4 drift, then shift back to 5th after the turn). Whether or not that's a good way of doing it I don't know, but I crash like crazy if I don't shift like that.

Outrun mode (which is mostly what I played) is basically all about slipstreaming behind as many vehicles as you can before passing them, and not touching them (especially rivals). I'm not sure if those skills would really help much in multiplayer races.

Pick up VOOT if you have the time to learn it. It's definitely not a pick-up-and-play kind of game, but it's great once you get the hang of it. VOOT and Outrun are definitely my top 2 XBLA games.

I played mostly multiplayer on outrun.. one thing which you must remember is that if there is a series of drifts, dont switch gears or use the brake, you just need to tap to the direction you want for the drift to switch directions. and for example on the canyon you can do the zigzag using this and pushing the gas down a little less. and yes, time trial is the best way to become good at multiplayer. If there is a guy right behind you try to keep going right at the edge of the track so they cant bypass you by going with a faster route.

and yeah, I'd recommend not to give up on VOOT so easily either :P

PVP

I'm bumping this because Ghegs and I have been playing it lately and it's still totally awesome and everyone should race us.

Also anyone who has trouble with time attack, try drifting less. A lot of turns can be cleared at full speed with just a natural outside-inside-outside line.
