I clicked on this thread hoping for some arbitrary discussion of how Twilight Insanity and Battle Garegga was alike.

Guess I was wrong.

Garegga is the darkest shmup I know.

Dark like yon ancient tome and the pit in the depths of ancient souls.

Oh, I totally have fun with Battle Garegga. But the whole system still pisses me off. I wish I could 1cc it without knowing how to manipulate rank and being able to score decently well. I wish that there was less "I have to read a strategy guide to be able to play this game" quality to it. If there were some "how to" demo like what you get in Ikaruga, where it spells out rank and some of the more obscure scoring mechanics out in idiotspeak, I'd probably hate it less. Random hints at game over screen would be nice too.

One of the deepest shooters ever made, and Raizing gives you NOTHING. I hate it. Hate it hate it hate it. Not the game, just the lack of official documentation on how to play the game. It's like giving a jr high student a calculus book that has only the problems with none of the lessons about how to solve them, and expecting the kid to get anywhere with it. It's BULLSHIT.

:o well said

if a "game" is a task to be completed within a set of parameters or rules, it's good to know what those rules are

The Garegga handbook explained the game mechanics in detail. The Garegga ST is mostly a translation of the handbook (along with extra info).

i think the fact that it needs a handbook was sort of the point..

I mean, when people need to hack the eeprom to look at the code and figure out how ranks might work, we're quite far from a "rtfm" kind of deal.
