I have that problem with numerous PCE shmups....too damn long I say. Anyone know how to make XP detect that a USB gamepad is in use, so it won't activate the screensaver?Tomtom wrote:Well, this is more due to my usage of MAME, but when I play DDP, it usually switches to the screensaver somewhere in the middle of the last boss fight. I usually remember to wiggle the mouse beforehand, but I've had some very unfortunate deaths there. Actually, a lot of my stupid deaths come from DDP.
What is your most embarrassing and stupid shmup death?

For me when in MAME I get a lot more deaths then on a console or cabinet. Usually something happens, I pause, check the problem, go off pause and for a few seconds the game lags shockingly as it gets back into sync. The most annoying part is the fact that in most games the enemies bullets do not lag but I do.

Tonight, playing Strikers 1999.
First time I ever made it to the last guy with all but 1 bomb (I *HAVE* to bomb the radial-spread of level 5's 2nd boss form).
On the first form, I was sitting in the safe spot waiting for the 3 wussy-planes to arrive signifying that it's time to rush the heart, and I rushed too quickly, right into the large bullets that naturally go AROUND you.
Attacked the TV and turned off the machine furious. Doubt I'll ever get there with that many bombs again.

Worst one ever:
Final level of Parodius Da!. The penguins in the shower somehow managed to kill me. I look away from the screen for a second and didn't realize I was pushing down on the D-Pad. I looked back just in time to see the Octopus crash into the floor.
Almost 1CC'd that game... *sigh*

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
Last night while playing Zero Gunner 2 with my brother in turns.
Because we were smoking a joint. One could play, the other smoke.
OK here we go!
I was playing, he was smoking.
Then he passed me the joint so I passed him the joypad.
Offcourse I didn't press pauze before passing the joypad.
Just When he had it in his hand he got hit.
And we were both like WTF
I guess you had to be there

also manuvering toward the small enemies in the stage 1 zelos field, NOT stoping, and screaming as I crash into it.
supprising I ever broke 1 million in that game.

Being curious enough to see if i can 'dance' on a boss's dead body or not. So far, i've gotten killed by doing that with the following bosses:
Einhander - stage 1 boss, stage 3 mini-boss
Gradius Galaxies - first boss
Also, in a somewhat related note: Ikaruga, 2nd boss. accidentally crashing into the weak-spot cover-armor as it was falling AFTER i killed the boss. yeah... that'd have to be my official Stupidest Shmup Death Ever. ^^;

offcourse
Seeing if the ground and/or floors in a horzie will kill you.
I allways get curious about this when I'm fully powered up.
And then I die offcourse and I can't help but think: "why didn't I wait to try that". And I stare at the ground.........

Reviving an old thread, this "zen shock" happens to me all the time in Strikers 1945 III. It's especially worse when I die for the first time in 1-5 and beyond, because the game's rank downshifts several levels. This completely throws my timing off, because the bullets suddenly start traveling at a noticeably slower speed and I end up dying the rest of my lives quickly. For me, any Psikyo game is like a Gradius game: die once and you're screwed.Icarus wrote:Anyone else suffer from "concentration shock"?
You're in the zone, deep concentration, the credit is going great, no problems so far. And then you make a tiny mistake, either mistiming a kill which wrecks your chain, or dying stupidly, and you're "shocked" out of your zen-like state. And then you die several times in quick succession trying to recover.
Seems to happen a lot to me right now, playing Espgaluda...
The age of Alluro and JudgeSpear is over.
Re: What is your most embarrassing and stupid shmup death?
i did this in gunroar on the fourth stage, after dodging several screenfuls of bullets. i have it in avi, even.Alluro wrote:*Mindlessly running into the ONLY FREAKING BULLET on the entire screen.
the other day i was demonstrating atomic robo-kid for my mother and died in the first stage. keep in mind i can one-life to stage fifteen.
i restarted the game, right then.
Level 5's boss attack where you stay in the center and go "left right left right left" is harder on low rank. But DAMN is it easier when it does the 6 radial pulses of elongated bullets right after.Alluro wrote: Reviving an old thread, this "zen shock" happens to me all the time in Strikers 1945 III.
