just get the japanese 360... chances are, just like 90 percent of all the other us games, they won't be locked even if they do come out here.
besides I don't think you'll even care by then since you'll have been playing them for a year or more by then.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

You already know that hard-core shmuppers already have such JPN region gaming consoles to play such exclusive shmup ports. Just bite the bullet and get a JPN region Xbox 360...then you wouldn't have to play the dreaded and very long waiting game of said 360 shmup ports when they finally debut on day one in the USA. The shmups genre is still considered a very narrow niche genre at best regardless of what localized gaming publishers put out for the masses. They release them as a courtesy to shmups fans because they know such a fanbase still exists. ^_~ChurchOfSolipsism wrote:Actually, in a crooked way this isn't such good news. Now I'm totally having doubts as to getting a Japanese xbox and games (this shit is expensive, after all), but what if they don't release them in the US (and even then, do I have to get an American xbox?) after all? Plus I don't want to wait another year or more until I can finally play Ketsui and Death Smiles cuz I'm a filthy consumer whore.
Like as if Cave Co. Ltd. will build such official Cave USA and/or Cave European arcade distribution houses for their arcade PCB offerings to get the word out that arcade shmup (and the occasional odd-ball arcade puzzler PCB offering) gaming titles are still alive and well. Means putting more people on the payroll and whatnot to pull if off successfully. Gotta cut the excessive fat off to stay lean and mean to stay in business...hence the reason why Cave doesn't have such outside arcade distro houses in other countries anyways.

Agreeing with this. Got it due to a goon recommendation and it was totally worth it. Although, this is one of "those" games which is region locked. The US version of EDF won't work on JP consoles, and the JP one, while totally playable despite being in Japanese, has all weapons in Katakana.Lynx Winters wrote:If you can't have fun playing EDF, you have forgot how to have fun.
Which was a good thing because I know Katakana, but it doesn't really matter since D3 Publisher really didn't put much effort into the game. (ie. there's a sniper rifle that does 2000 damage, and you can unscope with it.)

Shit. Well, this changes things for this Poor Boy From Ackerville.
I'm getting a US 360 (any advice? Do they still RR all over the place?)
Now I won't have to get the PS2 version of THE.
Now I don't have to feel bad about neglecting to buy Rez for PS2 when I had the chance.
I won't have to buy a Swap Magic to play DOJ.
I'll still have to buy a Swap Magic to play ESPgaluda (shit!)
I may be able to play Ketsui in its entirety before I die (lol).
I may have spent money on Ketsui Death Label for little reason (dammit) (that's probably what they intended, so I guess I don't mind supporting them).
I'll have a superplay DVD of Ketsui before it possibly comes out over here (what are the general opinions on watching superplays to improve your game? I don't know whether I'd despise or thank myself...).
I'm going to be spending an assload of money in the near future...
I was WRONG! I was schertain this would never happen in a zillion beatz *cough* years. Ah well, being cynical/pessimistic means nice shit like this is always a pleasant surprise.
I've had my eye on EDF2017 for quite some time; it'll be cool to play it if I can find it.
I'm probably forgetting something...hmmm...

EDF is fun, but the novelty wears off quickly. Given that the appeal of the game is fighting larger than life robots and bugs, Lost Planet does this much better. They figured out how to avoid things like clipping and slowdown, which most first (or third) person shooters got over like, ten fucking years ago.Lynx Winters wrote:If you can't have fun playing EDF, you have forgot how to have fun.antares wrote:

Personally, I don't see what's the problem. If you think it's fun figuring out enemy patterns for yourself, do it. If you want to learn from master players, go ahead. I don't see it as cheating at all; I mean, if you compare shmupping to doing sports (which is not as crazy as it sounds - after all, all you're doing when you're playing chess is sitting on your ass and using your head), you wouldn't say that watching professional athletes to improve your technique is cheating or anything. After all, you still have to implement all those fine techniques into your own play - which is the hard part. I've watched the DOJ DVD a million times, but I still don't manage to get the chain counter over 110 in the first stage. It fucking drives me nuts.m3tall1ca wrote:what are the general opinions on watching superplays to improve your game? I don't know whether I'd despise or thank myself...
On Topic: FUCK YES!
On recent off-topicness: Watching a super-play isn't cheating. In fact, we'd be handicapping ourselves by NOT watching them. I mean, the Japanese get to sit there in the arcade and watch the best players have at it in person, interact with them, get advice and support from those willing to give it, etc. All we have are super-plays and forums =/

It used to be a little taboo to even watch a super-play on these forums, because some viewed them as cheating. It's a little different now, but we still don't seem to be able to share information as freely as they do over there, which is what I think is stunting player development in the West at the moment.Arvandor wrote:On recent off-topicness: Watching a super-play isn't cheating. Not so much crazy as it is retarded. You're comparing a game that is programmed to be the same every time you play it to a competition involving human opponents. Hooray, the replay argument.ChurchOfSolipsism wrote:I mean, if you compare shmupping to doing sports (which is not as crazy as it sounds
I can wait for Ray-den 4 (please include), Deathsmiles. Deathsmiles is a Cave game so it's not like I'm going to play it for score or something, no hurry.

If somehow Ketsui and Deathsmiles makes it to the U.S., i'll be a happy man. I'll also be shocked. Let's hope.
I just can't justify buying another 360.

It shouldn't be too difficult to find some type of sports where the amount of athlete/ player-environment interaction ratio is similar; with some sports, there is almost no variation in the conditions you have to react to. Besides, although games have a set program code and in that way "is the same every time you play it", games do react to the way players play the game - see rank, aimed bullets etc.Rob wrote:Not so much crazy as it is retarded.
