Tantalum capacitors affect sound quality? This is new to me.I never noticed any difference between these and electroltic ones when I reworks the Konami sound modules (I made a lot o them), on the contrary sound seems more clear and powerful!Check my video on youtube by the way.Do not believe what the guy who recapped with tantalum capacitors his Xexex PCB spread about, he got sound issue because he made some mistakes, I'm sure of this. It's typical of the inexperienced people to blame others when they have troubles that actually depend from their fault :)

Oh, just reading around on audio/repair forums will find you many, many discussions on the subject. Some people say they sound better, some worse, what's clear is that they do sound different which is to be expected given the totally different characteristics. Whether that difference can be detected in something as low-fi as an arcade PCB, well - who knows. It would be a really interesting thing to have a PCB with a socketed Konami module swapped between tant/alu but leave the recording equipment and volume settings all the same, and record the audio output.

A lot of work for something that probably doesn't matter though.

I can do some comparison if you want , I have some socketed Konami board and some modules with tantalum and original electrolytics capacitors. But I guess my recording system is poor and can't get any diferences (at least for the human hears).
Maybe analyzing the captures with some audio programs (like Soundforge or Audacity) could reveal some differences.
