Well, it's definitely the next one in the series I will play. I've only played two thusfar. Destiny (my first) and Rebirth, which was a little above 'meh'. I've heard nothing but great things about ToD2... first I'm hearing of it's difficulty though...The hardest parts of the game include trying to keep your grade up and winning boss fights

I've not played it but AFAIK, it's not that much more sophisticated than it's predecessors. So, if you've played other games in the series, you might not be so impressed with it.Tales Of Symphonia may have been generic, but I really enjoyed the battle system

interesting to hear the different opinions
Can't find albert odessy in pal but its in US english so I could import it.
Yeah I own pretty much every DC rpg lol, grandia 2 was alot better than skies of arcadia imo, skoa was a very good game but the battle/combat system was too reptitive for me, still very good though, great plot graphics and music but too many random battles, good at the end you flew over the clouds and could avoid most of em.
I disliked the evolution games however the last bosses in each were very good, just same dungeon every time.
Working designs games seem to be where its at.
I admit I've never really tried the final fantasy series, but I don't intend to play online rpgs anymore, is star wars kotor online or offline?

I've been meaning to get Morrowind for PC for years nowit290 wrote:I gotta say Morrowind is 10 out of 10 material for me. The world has incredible depth and I enjoy RPGs that don't drive you along a linear path all the time. Probably why my favorite RPG of all time is Fallout.

Fallout I and II were such total sex. I was more fluid, but 2 let you become a porn star, live out Yojimbo, sleep with a mob boss' wife and fuck her up when she insults your sex ability, and generally just fuck shit up in a post-apocalyptic wasteland mad max style. I loved it. But yea, 1 was better. One of these days I need to try a playthrough where you don't kill anyone

I guess if you wanted to call it a First Person RPG, Deus Ex is quite badass as well, as is System Shock I and II (the respawning enemies in System Shock 2 are the biggest fault with it imo...the co op multiplayer is so. fucking. good)

I was only talking about Tales Of Symphonia, hence no mention of earlier games, and that at the time it was nice to play an RPG with a non-turn-based battle system.GaijinPunch wrote:I've not played it but AFAIK, it's not that much more sophisticated than it's predecessors. I've played both Tales Of Destiny games on the PSOne, and think that Symphonia holds up well against both of them.
Be attitude for gains:
1) Be praying...
2) Be praying...
3) Be praying...
And a shameless plug for the stuff I'm selling on eBay, if you're into that sort of thing.

Yeah, stand-alone, Symphonia was awesome, as the non-japan RPG community has never seen anything like it. The battle system had little improvement over Tales of Eternia (Destiny 2 in USA), most notably moving into 3D and being able to chain skills together. I'm not sure how well the playstation Tales games did in Europe, but here in the US, they bombed pretty badly - Destiny 1 sold like 60,000 copies, and Destiny 2/Eternia sold like 50,000. Thus, non-importers have seen little of these types of games.judesalmon wrote:I was only talking about Tales Of Symphonia, hence no mention of earlier games, and that at the time it was nice to play an RPG with a non-turn-based battle system.GaijinPunch wrote:I've not played it but AFAIK, it's not that much more sophisticated than it's predecessors. And Gaijin, Destiny 2 (PS2) is more fast paced than any Tales game, and less strategic than Rebirth (and feels more like a fighting game), so be prepared. SO much has changed in this one since Destiny 1: Multiple regular attacks, Tier 1 and Tier 2 skills (both with extensions), full ability customization with the enchant system... sorry about how I keep going on and on about these games, but I'm a huge fan of the series

Great game for the $30 you'll pay for it now. It doesn't include the original, however you don't need to know the original's story to enjoy it.roushimsx wrote:I really want to play it. I've heard good mojo about itdpful wrote:have you guys tried Shadow Hearts: Covenant?
Does it still come with the first game when you buy it, or was that just a preorder bonus?
I never really was a big DW fan, I found the first game very boring, so what convinced me to buy this one? It was $9.99 and I was bored outta my mind that day. I'm glad I picked it up.OmegaFlareX wrote:^ definitely. Being a DQ fan, I'm a bit biased, but it really is a great little handheld RPG. Pachisi rules. It's a damn fucking shame the SFC remake was never released here. I wonder how the translation project is doing...

Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!

Thought I'd resurect this thread instead of making a new one.
Well I've nearly beaten saturn version of grandia, quite shocked as to how its much more compelling than dreamcast version! Nice to see the continuity of items and spells, helped me understand a few items resurect potion being important! good ole reverse E.
Nearly beaten ps4 aswell just stuck at air castle lashiec battle, actually tried it got beaten haven't played in awhile.
Got stuck into chrono trigger, finding combat system akward, seems to be no way to control the battle as in, If I think about selecting an attack the enemy keeps attacking me, not turn based, not like.
FF6 is on to do list.
What rpgs are you guys playing now as its been a few months?
Looked at that rpg daisengai hour of darkness (sp?) looks a little bit comical but its in pal, and very similar to shining force. exploding penguins.....
I've been thinking alot about playing FF7 not sure what to do though, Should I get the pc version or wait until ps3 and hope for backwards compatibility, People are still raving about it, years later, must at the very least be fairly good.
Anyone know of a guide or translation other than gamefaqs to Terra phantastica? that game is beautiful but I don't have a bloody clue whats going on.

I didn't like LaPucelle all that much. To me, the coolest thing about FFT was experimenting with all the different jobs and abilities. LaPucelle seemed a lot like FFT, but without all of that cool 'job' and 'ability' stuff.
The purification and Vagrant Storyish item mod system just didn't seem to make up LaPucelle's lackluster character customization options. In fact, I disliked them both.
I've also heard good things about Shadow Hearts; in fact, I have Covenant, but I'm trying not to play it until I play through the original. I've got my eye on Atelier Iris and Radiata Stories, and I'm thinking that Dragon Quest VIII will be a must-have.

Working on the 'after game' of Atelier Iris. I probably haven't played nearly as many rpgs as everyone else here (grew up with computer rpgs like wizardry--not the console rpgs), but am coming around. Atelier Iris is pretty nice with multiple levels of game play. It would be pretty easy to just play straight through the plot without much thinking and never uncover any of the more interesting stuff. This is one I'm glad I did some FAQ research on since the weapon synthesis aspects of the game are virtually undocumented (other than it tells you that it is possible). And of course, there's all the store synthesis that becomes very involved and would require an enormous amount of trial and error. It is this other stuff that has made the game worthwhile and rather addictive. I think I've put in over 50 hours on it, but I am sure you could just go from start to finish in 25 hours or so.
I really owe it to myself to play chrono trigger.

Yeah you do. Easily in my top 3 jRPG list.CMoon wrote:I really owe it to myself to play chrono trigger.
Me? This is the first time I've visited the board in two months because of a little game called World of Warcraft. It owns me so hard. And that's ALL I've played. No shmups. No platformers. No adventures. I sold my Duo and I don't even really miss it.
I guess the allure of a game like this is having a good guild to run with, always-on-the-edge-of-your-seat PvP, and getting uber gear/"phat lewt" to dress your character(s) up like virtual barbie dolls of ownage. I do admit that the core gamplay (endless, mindless questing) is incredibly tedious, but the above things I listed, and the AWESOME instanced dungeons make it totally worth it.
Back to Azeroth I go.
And hence, a warning/recommendation to everybody. MMO's are hella addictive, even moreso than AIM. If you're itching for an RPG that you'll likely want to play and don't mind spending more time than you should, try WOW.
Chrono Trigger used to be my fave RPG back around 96-97 when I didn't play imports. Perfected it with an all ** cast with the top equipment for everybody. I still have fond memories of the game although I don't regard it as highly anymore.

Once upon a time, I had friends who'd play Halo and Super Smash Bros. and Tekken and Street Fighter with me. Now they all play EQ. All the time. Except for the ones who play WoW or Risk Your Life. When I hang out with them, guess what they talk about?
Thank god for XBox live.

I can't believe I've played through two RPGs this year already. And am not sick of them.
Draqon Quest 8 -- A little lacking in excitement and landmarks, but a very pleasant game with good atmosphere.
Tales of Symphonia -- Somewhat annoying characters and story, but surprisingly playable. There's enough compelling about it to play through, and probably thanks to the auto-battles.
Any suggestions for a next game, PS-GC-PS2? Something high enough quality but also lacking typical "RPG difficulty" (efficient battles = must). Minimal weapon cookery. I like buying weapons, easier.
edit: thinking Legend of Legaia (1)

I enjoyed Skies of Arcadia on the DC back when I played that (one of the few impulse purchases I've ever made, thankfully a good one); supposedly the GC version has been tweaked and improved, not to mention had new stuff added. Maybe once the Revolution's out I'll hafta pick myself up a cheap GC...truth be told, actually, SoA is probably the most recent RPG I've played, I haven't had time for one since.
