Wow, I'm surprised it actually runs at a good framerate now! Although the sound/music is completely borked. This game has some seriously difficult rank control and scoring mechanics.

Apparently Wyvern Wings is also playable now, although again no sound/music (which you aren't missing much as its ripped off metallica midi tracks).

Yep, works fine... Maybe you need to try something like http://www.clrmame.com/ (dunno if this is the right tool for the job)
Ahh, just learning about this. Looks useful, but I haven't found a lot of info. Thanks!

Also worth mentioning is that most of the sound effects are ripped from Starcraft.

At least it's not that unofficial Starcraft shooter that absolutely sucks...and is a Psikyo rip-off.

Could you do me a favor and check on Varth if you have it? Maybe it's just the rom's release version or whatever it's called. It runs fine in 0.122u4, but it says I'm missing a couple of files with the latest MAME release. Had the same problem with Gradius 4 with the new version, but it runs passably in the old v.
ROMs for individual games will often be updated for newer versions of MAME, making it necessary to download the new ROM (or just the new files in the zip w/the rollback torrent & use clrmamepro) for the game to work. In Varth's case it looks like there were several changes in the last few versions; check out the WIP section for the game.

Same deal with Gradius 4, where a timekeeper ROM was just added to the set.

tl;dr - If you update MAME and some of your games don't work, check out MAWs, and if the ROM was changed then find & download the new one.

I downloaded the Varth world rom from the site you suggested and tried to play it in the latest MAME build -- same issue. I'm sure I'm not doing something correctly, but to be honest, the older build is just fine for me right now. In other words, just wake me when Mushi and Ketsui are MAME'd. :D

i tried FB alpha latest version with dodonpachi. and to my suprise, theres a lot of slowdown which i never occurred before in mame, even on stage 1 line-up-tanks. are those slowdowns intentional?
It is to us a sufficient body in which, fairies and it is packed and can group of play.

FBA has become quite cluttered recently, it looks a lot more like MAMElite now, as for DoDonPachi having a lot of slowdown, make sure you have 'enhanced' select as your video blitter, select 'no effects' in in blitter options and uncheck blitter options > advanced settings > Use DirectX texture management.
You can also up the CPU speed too 200% under the game tab.

I'm getting great speeds with little to no slowdown at all and my PC is only 2.6ghz + 256RAM.

nah dude, mame team got no idea how to emulate PGM hardware, innit
I believe Ketsui hasn't been dumped at all, at least according to the Guru's dump list.

Yes, it's intentional, but the game seems "underclocked". If you set CPU speed at 105% there's roughly same amount of slowdown as in MAME.

Because emulation is a very hard thing to do. Even dumping can be complicated and expensive.
Some people will eventually try to emulate PGM games like Ketsui but we don't know how long it will take : since people do this for free, we can't just ask them to work on emulating a particular game.

Hey, hasn't that been emulated recently? I know I've seen a few on YAJ here and there. Whats it called again? Craft Star?
