Reading any review of a shooter is a waste of time. These forums are all you need to make an informed decision on what to buy.
The point of criticism is telling people what to buy lol.

Also lol at the comment in general.

I seriously hope that the final level in Genetos doesn't turn out to be Ikaruga.

I loved the comment that said something like "I never even knew Ikaruga had chaining or a score counter until recently but I still don't care, because I like it as a tough arcade shooter with elegantly simple mechanics."

The whole goddamn game is based on chaining! The levels are designed specifically around chaining! Without the chaining it becomes a pretty simplistic shmup with a unique color-changing mechanic but not much else; with the chaining it becomes an elegantly designed puzzle-shmup (IMO). I just don't understand how anyone can overlook the main feature of the game from a gameplay and design standpoint.

Also the trashing of Cave shmups was priceless. This guy clearly has no idea about scoring systems at all or he'd know that most cave games reward you for taking the risk of not shooting for some period of time, either to pause for enemies to come on screen to continue your chain in DDP, or to let tons of bullets on-screen to cancel them all in Progear or ESPGaluda or Ibara, or to point-blank an enemy and then chain the others on screen in Ketsui, or many others. Hell, I shoot more constantly in Ikaruga than a lot of Cave shooters; you just have to shoot more accurately in Ikaruga maybe, but you still have to be very fast and methodical about shooting everything on screen in the correct order.
"I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."

You could have saved me a load of time if you'd just said it was by Tim Rogers above the link.

Whats with the xeroxed box shots and no actual gameplay screenshots? That whole article sent my pretentious-shit-o-meter off the scale.

Is Tim Rogers actually a very elaborate troll?

On that note, if the reviewer doesn't consider score, and enjoys the dodging and such in Ikaruga, how could he dislike (or not even TRY) a Cave game? Not that he'd be able to get anywhere in... any of them, but still.

tim wrote a pretty good piece on arcade games (shooting/fighting) for gamestm, entitled East Side Story. six-page write-up, and recommendations on what were the hot places to search out. that was a pretty good read.

but obviously there's a world of difference between internet journalism and real journalism

tried reading one of tim's reviews for lumines back in the day (before i really knew who he was), and after about 2,000 words, he was still talking about the car journey to his friend's house that actually had the psp and game

do people take that site seriously...?

and thanks for the link, that was a funny read

edit: avatar's on point 8)

That was actually a bit less impenetrable and to-the-point than a lot of what he's written (and a lot of what's on Action Button). Hell, the game's mechanics were actually mentioned.

my frothing demand for NGJ increases

The funny thing is not that he didn´t know it had chaining, but that he says he didn´t know it had a SCORE COUNTER. I hope for him that he didn´t really mean that.

YOU DIDN'T KNOW? IT IS THE MOST EPIC SHIT EVER! IT'S LIKE... EPIC SHIT! /sarcasm

Ironically, I never saw any of those guys mention anything really story related...

... but carry a search for the word "story" and you'll see it's mentioned in almost every freaking paragraph.

Let´s not and say we did.

Tim Rogers is the master of talking about shit that hasn´t anything to do with anything. People who keep describing things with a lot of words usually try to cover the fact that they can´t think in straight, clear terms. I used to like certain reviews from him but nowadays I can´t be arsed to waste my time with self-indulgent drivel like that.

If that is actually a photograph of that person then I was wrong for even taking a split second to consider his opinion about anything seriously.
