I doubt i'll even get to play Death Smiles or Ketsui.
s/m
Thunderforce VI is also getting my vote, though has been announced for the US yet? If it has that will be quite awesome. I will probably have to wait until the game comes here before I can play it...or get myself a Japanese PS2...
yeah, i am finally now looking into swap magic (can't find darn flip-top for bulky PS2), or if I should bother saving up for a japanese console (questionable if all the other good shmups are going to get some type of downloadable version or budget price compilation).
i just saw a video of Death Smile for the first time and I applaud cave for trying something different. They deserve the right to stray from their equation of vert-manic more often imho. Plus I tend to like the style of things other than spaceships and laser beams once in a while, I know its blasphemy.

There should be some company here that releases those games here in the US anyway...Xseed anyone? Or how about Atlus? Either one of those companies would have done a quality job...[Sighs longing for the days of Working Designs...]
Zebra Airforce wrote:Working Designs would make the games better by adding lifebars and having a set amount of ammo.
Despite the sarcasm of that, you are probably right...the might screw up one of those games somehow. But then again, there was one game that had set amounts of ammo for the power-ups...anybody recall Einhander?

Didn't they mess with Silpheed PS2?
Atlus might do an okay job, but really it's all about UFO or Aksys these days.
You will have to pardon me on your abbreviation "VP1." I am not sure which game that was. And as for Silpheed for PS2...I never played the Working Designs version. But one my friends did, and liked it...though he is not very experienced in the shmup genre...

VP1 = Viper Phase 1.
I have been noticing that UFO and Aksys have been the ones porting shmups recently. Who knows? Maybe in the future (predicting 2010), we can finally get some ports of some Cave games.

Viper Phase 1...ah that is a game that I have never played...and sounds like one that I should track down.
As for the Cave releases...it appears that those games well some of the more recent arcade shmups have been showing up an the Japanese Xbox Live Arcade...I am not sure I would count on a port to PS2 or a even some kind of disc-based release in the future for some of those games...they will more than likely show up on Playstation Network or Xbox Live Arcade. In fact I believe that Death Smiles is coming to Xbox Live Arcade, no?

Ketsui and DOJ Black Label's said to be getting a disc release. If any of those two porters (or any other porter for that matter) fail to get a Live Arcade release (as experienced by 5pb), they probably might resort to disc-based releases as well.

Well there you have it, but from what I have seen around the net, it appears that Death Smiles is getting a Live Arcade release...whether it comes out on the US Live Arcade remains to be seen. I am all for the disc based ports and releases, but I think getting them as downloadable games are the way to go now.
what I've wanted from the get go is for MS to green light a program where you can buy the DLC on actual disc. I have around 20-40 (can't remember how many I actually purchased) XBLA titles- I'd pay a little more to have them all MS pressed to a disc.
Eh. That being said - I'm looking forward to Ketsui- curious to see how it turns out

Nah. Deathsmiles is coming on a disc in a box. Hoorah!

I remember when they said that Trigger Heart Exelica was coming to disc, and it ended up being a download for Xbox Live Arcade. Several other boards and sites point in this direction for Death Smiles. I am not one to argue, so unless there is some mistranslation sitting out there, I still think its coming to Live Arcade. I will post links for where I saw this.
This is just about the only credible one link I can find at the moment...though it doesn't mention whether or not is going to be a disc or Xbox Live Arcade release. Chances are without a mention of the Live Arcade in there, then I would have to say you might be right, MX7. ^_^;
States in plain Japanese both a regular and LE disc release are planned for Spring 2009. They even give you the official box art there.
This is one game where I'll just have to get the LE. With the release in Spring 2009, the level of anticipation is going to be off the charts-- at least for me.
Scroll down to the September 1st news, and there it says Xbox Live Arcade. Is that what the translation of site says, that it is coming to Xbox Live Arcade? However, you guys are probably right, its going to be a disc release.

Dude, the official site says it's going to be a disc release. You're citing some random dude's blog. It is a "Live" title (meaning there is online coop and other features from the Xbox live service), but it's not an XBLA title.

Word. I know Death Smiles probably plays nothing like ProGear, but I love ProGear to death, so in my mind Cave hori's are always a good thing.

I hope so Every time I see it in action it looks like the best hori shooter ever...and I don't mean the graphics, colors, loligoths, blah, blah, blah but how well designed it looks in terms of bringing hori's up to the level of vert's for pure enjoyment. In my opinion side-scrolling STGs always feel somewhat less intuitive.

That isn't the shmup I saw previewed at last years Tokyo Game Show with the broom stick is it? I remember thinking that might be fun to play.
ARgh, it's starting to seem that I need a X360 and a Wii. Fuck. I was hoping I wouldn't have to buy inferior hardware this generation, but PS3 isn't getting ANYTHING so...
My Most Anticipated -list:
1. Gradius Rebirth
I know I will love this, even if it was mostly recycled stuff.
2. R-Type Dimensions
I don't know what it is but I want it bad. If this turns out good, then I'm forced to buy a Suxbox.
3. Thunderforce VI
4. Otomedius
Mad fun for Konami fans. The touch controls are totally unnecessary. Too bad they implemented an energy bar, 1-hit death & check points are the only way to go for *ius games I think.. even if GV was greatness itself.?
5. Death Smiles
It's fun. Loads of fun. Forget Progear, this is nothing like it. Very relaxed and enjoyable game.
6. Ketsui X
I just played Ketsui again and damn it's fine. Instant, relentless action.
Not Interested -list:
DDP: DOJ Black Label
Give me new games, not new versions....
Raiden IV
Likewise. Raiden games are stuck in a limbo of uncreativeness. Luckily the ship moves faster than in RIII, but I was still quite bored with this.
Ketsui DS
Thanks, but I'll rather play shmups on devices with proper input methods
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.
Honestly, it's a toss-up between Ketsui X, Deathsmiles, and Thunderforce VI. I had a dream last night in which I received ESPRa.De, Pink Sweets, Progear, and Muchi Muchi Pork all in disc-based format for the 360. Do you think Cave will even consider creating console releases for these games? Jesus, what I'd do for a arcade-perfect port of Guwange...
I never thought Deathsmiles would happen, so guess it's possible.
