No, I would consider the original Star Fox and it's sequel for N64 to be rail shooters, despite the 3D boss fights in SF64.MathU wrote:I really would consider Star Fox a 3D shoot 'em up, not a rail shooter.
I hear the newer ones are more like 3D shooters though.

Oh, on topic...What do you guys consider to be THE greatest rail shooter of all time? There's not a lot to choose from, but there are some really wonderful games.
I've never played Sin and Punishment.
I think the best one I can think of is Panzer Dragoon Orta. I mean it looks wonderful, and the game adds more to the rail shooter design buy having the speed up and slow down buttons, and having to morph on cue to deal with bosses and other things.
Star Fox 64 for second place, just because it's so awesome. "DO A BARREL ROLL!".

A thread this long and not one mention of Night Striker, for shame.

Why? There's the same kind of scrolling to be found in a vertical shoot 'em up, with an added vertical dimension.evil_ash_xero wrote:No, I would consider the original Star Fox and it's sequel for N64 to be rail shooters, despite the 3D boss fights in SF64.
Of course, that's just an opinion.
