The original Shutter is worth a watch, I think. It creeped me out a lot!

Prince of Darkness is one I've never heard of. I'm going to track this down now. Looking forward to a new, old horror flick :)

I know this is OT, but I hate the new CG horror films. Nothing less scary than a Flying, black, cartoon looking bad guy

You might want to check out the 2004 flick of "Dumplings"...interesting film in it's own right with lavious photography of sumptious food being prepared and cooked. Consumption of food being eaten by the actresses and actors makes you feel like grabbing a quick bite to eat while watching it. ^_~

Another horror/thriller/action film called "Silk" is worth checking out. It came out in 2006 and features an interesting method of capturing such ghostly phenomena with a cool high-tech device. I won't ruin it for you but the motley crew set out to capture such a ghost...some strange shit happens to them. A key scene with an Asian gal slowly stripping gets interesting and what she does next is eye raising, indeed.

The opening scene of what seems to be a hostage/terrorist shootout situation nicely sets up the tone for the rest of the film by raising up the tension/adrenaline factor. There are some interesting twists on gun battles/shootouts with the supernaturnal in this particular film as well. As to why this film is called the one-worded title, you'll have to watch it to learn why that is.

Overlooked film, very enjoyable.
Yes, that's true...but would that movie actually fall into the category of "horror"? For me, that'd fall into the category of "thriller". There's a big old gap between the two categories, though the best of the former tend to steal a great bit from the latter.

I wouldn't call "Duel" a horror film at all, but a great thriller.

For the OP, how about "The Birds" by Mister Never-Goes-Out-Of-Style, Alfred Hitchcock? Or the original "Psycho" by the same?

I watched this last night per your recommendation and I can't really recommend it to anyone else, but the whole leg thing was pretty fucking gruesome. :D

Alice Sweet Alice is a decent slasher set in early 60s New Jersey community that centers around Church. Bonus points for having a 12 year old Brooke Shields as the first murder victim.

Fpr the famous shower scene featured in Psycho, it was revealed that Hershey's chocolate syrup was used as a substitute for blood effects swirling down the drain. Pretty effective, especially for a black & white film.

The stabbing sound effects heard during the shower scene, a sound effects man stabbed a watermelon and recorded the sounds when doing it. Sometimes, you don't have to look too hard to use everyday items to generate some cool and trippy sound effects for film production. It's just a matter of trial and error and a lot of experimention to come up with some original sound EFX these days.

A bit off subject, The Duel is based off from a short story written by Richard Matheson. He wrote the novel I Am Legend, The Incredible Shrinking Man, Legend of Hell House, as well as the short story Prey (which was adapted in the movie, Trilogy of Terror). His stories are responsible for many famous movies. Also, he wrote the scripts for The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler. Anything he writes comes highly recommended by me.

Exorcist is officially the most creepy and intimidating movie ever for me.

They just got everything right in that movie (in the original already, though the reissue was even better.).

Aside from that I second/third/fourth the recommendations on The THING!
One of the best movies ever indeed. :)

Both are far better than any recent efforts.

Check out the French film "Inside", great score, great acting. And it will make you realize just how pussy all of the American innocent person trying to protect themselves from an attacker movies are.

Also First Born and Jacob's Ladder get a shout out even though they aren't true horror. I also concur with The Thing, The Evil Dead trilogy and [Rec].

I heard that (Them)Ils and High Tension are also good.

Miike's Imprint is probably the most disturbing peace of cinema ever, and gets my highest recommendation.

I would recommend "The Mist" as well. I don't think there's too much gore (it doesn't bother me, so I have a hard time recalling how gory movies are). It deals with a set of of characters who not only have to survive the monsters outside, but the blind fear that consumes the rest of their enclave.

A lot of the movies recommended here are pretty good, but from what you said I think The Mist would be more up your alley than anything else.

Very average, run of the mill movie. Lacks horror. About as scary as lettuce. I'd say 5/10.

Pretty much. But as many horror movies as I try and watch, very few of them are genuinely scary or creepy. I watch most of them just for the gore or because they're so goofy (yet entertaining).

And on that note, I watched Prince of Darkness for the first time the other night. Definitely not Carpenter's best work. The story is just badly written. Still worth a watch if you're a fan. I couldn't help cracking jokes every time the porn star looking guy with the mustache would come on screen / speak. And I couldn't believe they got Alice Cooper to play the role of the pasty leader of the killer bum legion. :P

Hey you know your stuff on spanish movie, maybe you should try The Dark Hour (I didn't really like it though) or The Night of the Sunflowers (okay not really horror that one, mostly thriller but very good) I uploaded both of these on mininova with english subs.

As for good horror movies I think you should try:

Isolation
Spanish horror you say? Go and bloody check out [Rec]. It's a fantastic little horror movie that puts most (if not all american horror to shame). In fact they saw fit to remake [Rec] and call it Quarantine (and then completely miss the point of this fine film.

But yeah, Alice had has a few acting bits over the years. He played Freddy's father in the sixth 'Nightmare' film, and even had the starring role in "Monster Dog" (a horrendously entertaining B-movie).

The premise of this sounds terrible simply due to the fact that Blair Witch was the most praised piece of shit ever, and the more recent Diary of the Dead was just as bad (although, not praised). I'll have to check it out any ways as this is the first I've heard of it. Doesn't look like this has ever seen release inside the US though. Netflix doesn't carry it. *off to mininova*

(Rec) is way way better then any of those. Due to setup it feels a shitload realer and also shows enough gore and horror to set it apart from the subtler unseen things of Clover Field or Blair Witch project.

Everyone check this site out, it's really good for finding sweet horror cinema.
