Lol, you guys are easily ruined. :DTaylor wrote:Fanbase ruined touhou for me.
That's much like saying "4chan ruined the internet for me" (though I imagine a lot of people here would actually say that).

I don't even want to know what that site/thing is. I only know the definition stated by others something about the internet "hate machine".moozooh wrote:Observer wrote:Getting to know the Touhou fandom...Lol, you guys are easily ruined.Taylor wrote:Fanbase ruined touhou for me.

But let me rephrase that: I was showing people shooters, manly mecha and huge spaceships shooters (Hyper Duel, DDP, Raiden, GURADIUSU V, Ikaruga and some R-Type Delta) and a couple of them stopped me and say:
"Wait, no lolis? We were here for the lolis!" (they only played Touhou, that's was their only shooter ever)
...
That's when a single tear of pain appeared on my face although we could make it movie-like and add an echoing scream that gets lost in the night.
However, I don't hate Touhou because it was actually what brought me back to games after a lot of time and the great disconnection from the mainstream so it has my respect.
I just remembered I used to hate R-Type Delta stage 6 because the entire level freaked me out and it was quite hard and found the boss to be extremely frustrating. It costed me ages to get to stage 7 because of this.

No it isn't? Besides, 4chan climbed on the bandwagon very late in the day.moozooh wrote:That's much like saying "4chan ruined the internet for me" (though I imagine a lot of people here would actually say that).
My gripe is simply that nobody within the massive community likes or plays the games. It's founded in music, porn and tired 2ch memes - yet they are actually decent shmups.

About Gradius V:
What use is picking up all four options after dying in Gradius V during a bossfight when I´m stuck to the horrible slowest speed? And if you have that rotating option choice (Type 2?), that´s pretty much useless without Laser.
In other Gradius games, killing the bosses even with your regular shot isn´t impossible, and checkpoints made you stock up at least with some speed ups. Instant respawn just doesn´t mix with the Gradius formula and that´s painfully obvious in this game. Being to slow always is a real killer in Gradius, and Treasure changed so much in V that leaving this stupid default speed in boggles my mind. Die during a bossfight and you´re even more fucked than in any other Gradius game.
I think Gaiden did a much better job of adding some changes to the formula and making it more fun, first and foremost getting to arrange your own power up bar. And its stages burst with style and tricky parts while being relatively short - Gradius V made things dull and long, with that WHOA EPIC droning military soundtrack (I really loved that squeaky 80ies "Intermezzo" tune in the beginning of stage 2, though). And no Moai stage? Oh, so Treasure is too cool to make a Moai stage? In retrospect, they just put too much of their own flavour into it, but that´s not good for a series that has so many trademark moments in it. Especially since the Moai were one of the major elements in Gradius games.
Don´t get me wrong, I like Treasure, but I stopped liking Gradius V very early, and after playing Gradius II and Gaiden I now know why. It is great for presenting you flashy stuff - BENDING LASERS!!! - but overall it lacks the finetune of I,II and Gaiden (III and IV were pretty crappy IMHO). Sticking freeze options right into the bosses cores is unmatched, though

Learning Mars Matrix had chaining made the game for me. I used to hate it before that. (still suck at it though... and some people say DOJ is hard. lol.)
I remember putting down R-Type Delta for several months after I managed to reach stage 6. That shit was so ridiculous I didn't even bother learning the patterns. Took me a hell of a lot of time to beat it.

I would. 4chan is what makes the internet "barely tolerable" rather than "fun".moozooh wrote:Observer wrote:Getting to know the Touhou fandom...Lol, you guys are easily ruined.Taylor wrote:Fanbase ruined touhou for me.

On topic, though: goddamn bubble stage in Gradius 3 (arcade). If I even manage to get past it in 1 life (which I've only managed once) the boss eats me alive. It's borderline unfair.

Well, my point rather is: why not just ignore the fan community? Don't let some random crap like that even touch you, it's absurd. I have several hobbies that are subjected to fan communities (anime, for one, also has a lot of embarrassing side-content exposed there), but I'm just ignoring every one of them that I don't like or find interesting enough.Taylor wrote:My gripe is simply that nobody within the massive community likes or plays the games. (This reminds me how I went to Einsturzende Neubauten gig this spring, and there were dozens of teenage goth chicks all around me. Screaming teenage goth chicks.)

It doesn't matter. If it were ten seconds it would bug me. The reason I play games like this is because they let me get right into the action. If I wanted a story with no gameplay I would be playing Final Fantasy instead.orange wrote:there's like what 30 seconds of cutscenes?dmauro wrote:Unskippable cutscenes in Gradius V kind of ruin it for me.
Also, I'm not very good, so I play the first stage a lot.

Gradius V needs a hack where you can control the aimed options with the right analog stick...ala robotron style.
