The MGS 3 that comes with that compilation is the Subsistence version (with the new camera and whatnot). It just doesn't come with the extra stuff that was found on the 2nd disc when Subsistence was first released. MGS 2 is the Substance version as well.

Just got back with my copy of MGS 4. Looks like shmups are going to be on hold for a while....

Apparently act 2 is phenomininominal.

I just made that word up btw.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Well, if you already were starting to hate something because it was taking a direction even further from what you wanted...there's logic here.

I beat this game and it sooooo delivers the goods for a metal gear fan. Such closure and some truly memorable moments and a return to things from the past.

I know hate is around for the cut scenes but I was expecting it and honestly would have this game the way it is now. Besides... you CAN skip the cut scenes and still have a game that is as long as say God of War.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I stand corrected, thanks for that info. What was on the second disc? As far as the cut scenes go, I've heard that they have valuable information that you need to complete MGS4-is that true?

MGS3 online, Metal Gear 1 and 2 (MSX versions), and maybe a couple minor extras that I forgot.

You'd think that they could have copy and pasted the MSX games and have all the Metal Gears in one collection. Online is useless now since it's down.

The main meat of the 2nd disc was the online game but the servers have been shutdown for some time now. It also had:

-Duel Mode (Re-fight the bosses)
-More Snake vs Monkey stages
-Secret Theatre (Hilarious cutscenes that generally made no sense and were previously only available on the MGS3 website)
-Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2
-Probably some other minor stuff I'm forgetting

Nothing you can't really live without unless you're a die hard Metal Gear fan. If you are then look around, sometimes you'll get lucky at Lamestop and find a used copy with both discs. Or you could always hit up ebay.

If you had the limited edition version of Subsistence there was also a 3rd disc that had Metal Gear Solid 3: The Movie which was basically just the cutscenes all put together into one long ass movie. There were also some trailers and other promo stuff on the 3rd disc.

That sucks that they took out the MSX versions; online I can understand-who get's online with their PS2's anymore?

The servers were taken down, anyway. I really think that's the reason disc 2 wasn't included. The average Joe who picks up the collection probably won't even know there's a disc misssing, while if Konami included it they'd have to deal with support calls and accusations over an unplayable online mode.

If anyone cares, here's an overly-anal breakdown over the versions. The original release of MGS3 had:

The main game ('natch), with
* Downloadable camos & face paints.
Snake vs. Monkey (5 stages).

The PAL version had:

The main game, with
* European Extreme difficulty.
* Downloadable camos & face paints, with some new ones based on European flags.
Snake vs. Monkey (7 stages).
Demo Theater (watch the game's cutscenes).
Duel Mode (fight the bosses, normally or with handicaps).

The Subsistence re-release was two discs. Disc 1 was also called Subsistence, and had:

The main game, with
* A new over-the-shoulder camera that can be toggled to.
* European Extreme difficulty.
* The previously download-only camos & face paints.
Demo Theater (watch the game's cutscenes).

Disc 2 was called Persistence and had:

Snake vs. Monkey (7 stages).
Duel Mode (fight the bosses, normally or with handicaps).
Secret Theater (stupid little parody shorts).
The MSX2 games, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.
Online multiplayer, now defunct.

The limited edition and PAL versions also had a third disc, Existence, which finally eliminates that pesky "gameplay" by editing cutscene and in-game footage together to make a movie. I haven't seen this.

Now we can sit back and wait for the inevitable "Metal Gear Solid 4: Subservience," or something.

I read about a paragraph until I got to this:

"From stealth mechanics that actually work to epic boss fights and some of the best storytelling in videogames, MGS is able to hold its own against anybody who claims that videogames can't be art."

Despite the article being tongue in cheek, there were so many fails there I didn't bother reading any further.

Just bought the collection and playing MGS2. Man, is even more annoying that the first MGS the first time through. I played four hours and most of it was figuring out what to do. I'm at the take the pictures part and I want to throw my PS2 out the window from the frustration (don't know what the fuck to do.)

I'm like walking around the auditorium room and it just keeps looping. Am I supposed to be taking pictures of the presentation? lol.

I hate games that are not immediately obvious.

well did you make it all the way to metal gear? it's the 3rd room in.

once you're there you see metal gear and the general presenting. you need to take the pics as indicated, then upload the pics from the computer on the right.

lol mgs2 tips :)

Yah, I'm like stupid. Somehow I ended up going in circles, but I went back and got to the Metal Gear ok. The pictures thing was cool, but man the game is picky in how you shoot them.

'neays, Raiden is so homo (emo or whatever). I guess the rumors weren't that false.

Edit: he's like so cool in the MGS4 trailer with his ninja suit and katana. Wait, don't tell me nothing.

Unscathed, when you finish that section on the tanker, be sure to take on the next mission: finding the nearest bin for the disc.

Truth. Raiden isn't that bad, besides his flowing locks of hair. :D I like him, but I know I'm in the minority.

He does get much cooler in MGS4 though. Much. A lot.

Well I'm glad you're getting your money's worth (that seems a little expensive these days tbh.)
When you get engrossed in the unfathomable plot, start to love the sound of Raidens voice, stop every five seconds for some pointless dialogue or lengthy cutscene, die every five seconds because you're slipping on birdshit, and face up to the fact that if Hideo doesn't go back to school and start learning how to edit you may be faced with one of the most tedious game series in history, let me know.

PS1 MGS is a terrific game - Hideo struck the balance just right. It's bloated, but in all the right places and for all the right reasons.

Thanks although let's stop at no kills and no alerts - I didn't continue but I reloaded my save quite a bit before mastering some of the sections.
