sealed game collectors
I've never really understood why someone would want a game that they never intend to play. Oh sure, I understand the "I want to collect them" aspect, but If I buy one, it's because I want to play it, not just own it. Leaving it sit there unused seems like such a waste a money... doubly so when talking about buying a sealed copy, leaving it sealed, and then buying a second copy to play.
Get the game, play the game, take care of the game. That's my simple philosophy.

I refuse to allow too many to build up. I think I own <20 shooting games (in total I've owned hundreds, I imagine). If I'm not using something fairly regularly I have a tendency to flog it. Can't stand sentimental hoarding. Sealed hoarding? ugh!jpj wrote:yeah, but how many of us can attest to having more games than we intend to play. i've got tons of games "on the back burner", which are just sitting there...

I always wanted to bust this guy's balls when he posted his message about it on Digital Press...
...in any case, he doesn't mean badly. As far as I know, he's not with the video game slabbing people.
Incidentally, even Digital Press hates sealed game grading, if not collecting.

i own maybe 30 games, which i feel is faaar too much. but then i think "well, i'm getting frustrated with this one now, so i'll move onto this other game...". but if i think i will definitely come back to it at some point, i wont bother selling it in the meanwhile (wouldn't make sense unless you need the cash anyway). or to put it this way: i've owned a dodonpachi PCB for over a year now, and i've only played two credits on it...RGC wrote:I refuse to allow too many to build up. I dont own all that much. I bought luminous arc about 3 months back. I buy MVS carts from time to time and thats it. I have quite a nice selection of XBOX games but with my tv out of action I have nothing to play them on. When i get around to buying a new one I will set up the Xbox and get a 360, maybe a PS3 if the prices of the games drops a little. Ive also a few pal PS2 games which i have waiting until i get around to buying a Pal PS2 (only have a JP one right now)jpj wrote:yeah, but how many of us can attest to having more games than we intend to play. i've got tons of games "on the back burner", which are just sitting there...
the only thing i have not played is My steel battalion i bought it when the price was a little high and I refuse to sell it for the stupid prices it is going for now. If I had the room (and my TV) I would have it set up to play at a moments notice some of my best friends (on XBL but more so MSN now) are hardcore Steel battalion. That game seems to attract a lot less kids than anything else I play.

I have been thinking about collecting unopened music CDs. They go up in value as well, and once you download them that's it.
But I'm sorry. To read the booklet, gaze at the pics, look at the CD, sniff the plastic... can't resist

Alas, Ikaruga is going...
Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

records are better for that. The artwork is huge and sexy!

Yeah, I can totally relate. I'm gaming more or less one day on, one day off at the moment. And a 'gaming day' might consist of half a dozen credits, or ~45mins-1hrs play. Like you, I own a barely played DDP (albeit PSX edition). The thought of it just sitting there gathering dust, to me borders on gaming crime (and not the GTAIV kind). As a result, I often gravitate towards selling it, but then I'll convince myself that I will get around to playing it afterall. Incidentally, I've 1CC'd the first loop, but the score was pathetic. Unfortunately, dedicating time to achieving a good DDP score means diverting my attention away from other equally deserving titles. I've seriously considered selling all but one game before -- trouble is, I wouldn't know which to keep.jpj wrote:i own maybe 30 games, which i feel is faaar too much. but then i think "well, i'm getting frustrated with this one now, so i'll move onto this other game...". but if i think i will definitely come back to it at some point, i wont bother selling it in the meanwhile (wouldn't make sense unless you need the cash anyway). or to put it this way: i've owned a dodonpachi PCB for over a year now, and i've only played two credits on it...RGC wrote:I refuse to allow too many to build up. I think its a shame that you post again without any topic related content!
At least some people here know the word discussion and I get a first impression about what shump gamers think about sealed games ^^ ...
I think its not a secret that some sealed shumps like RS, Border Down and so on reach incredible high prices when they are in sealed condition!

I'm also like a mortal enemy of those guys, I buy things sealed and then open them, pretty much regardless of what it is. Most recent? A sealed Taromaru just a few months ago. It cost a great deal of money, and then I ... opened it.
And then I played it.
Disc is still in the Saturn.

i prefer y-folded seal style !
e.g.
the value of an sealed (y-folded) FF7 US : $600+
the value of an sealed (shrinkwrapped) FF7 US : $350+
and the y-folded version looks better ...

That's awesome! And don't you hate that white sticky spinecard US psone games came with? That one use to leave all the glue on the box...Denvan wrote:sure,Turrican wrote:So, if I may join, which kind of cellophane wrap do you prefer in sealed games?

...hey wait a minute, I was a fool. The glue problem only happens if you're idiot enough to try to open the game!
Now you disappoint me. I thought you were some bizarre guy with a weird passion for cellophane.Denvan wrote:e.g.

Instead it seems you're just a very ordinary man with a passion for big money.

where on earth did this mentality come from? people buy or keep sealed games because they enjoy collecting, and hunting for something in sealed condition is far more difficult than finding it second-hand. and therefore you get people willing to sell to the collector types (plus interest).Turrican wrote:I thought you were some bizarre guy with a weird passion for cellophane.
there are people who fork out £500+ for the promo singles led zeppelin had in some eastern european countries around the time of the second album. i don't assume this is because of some fetish for vinyl. but rather because they were given out to local radio stations in single digit quantities, and had unique artwork.
collecting sealed games (like collecting anything, really) is about rarity.

None of my games are sealed, I don't buy higher priced games just to let them sit there and collect dust without being played (not counting when I bought Madden titles, those can collect all the dust they want), I've got Saturn titles that aren't sealed, but are worth a lot to me, they WILL be played, lots.

I spent far too much money on my sealed Front Mission 3 just so I knew it was in decent condition.
@jpj: I think I have fairly clear the distinction between rare stuff, shinkwrapped stuff, and stuff which is considered rare only 'cause it's shrinkwrapped.
Now another question to keep this awesome thread alive: are you collectors of sealed stuff ever haunted by nightmares at night, that inside the precious cover there may be a defective cartridge or cd?
Sure, it's something that you will never know for sure but... It's scary isn't it?
Oh wait... There I go again! Me fool! A defective copy! That's no nightmare - that's a wet dream! Sealed with factory flaws - the rarest form possible!!

Games exist to be played, how can you appreciate something fully without actually playing it. The Saturns 6 button pad was created for a reason.
That being said I intentionally purchased sealed copies of shining force 3 scenarios 1-3 for the joy of opening my favourite games ever made. It was worth it!

So i take it your american. prices between EU and and US games vary a lot. I know you guys kick yourself in the teeth when you see the prices we get some stuff. I know theres a lot of games I own US versions of just becuase they are cheaper.Denvan wrote:sure,Turrican wrote:So, if I may join, which kind of cellophane wrap do you prefer in sealed games?

I think the prices are stupid and over inflated but if i had a sealed game which was worth a bit I would sell it in a heart beat. and buy a 2ndhand or unselaed one at a fraction of the price.

On Digital Press I believe we said there may be a ham sandwich or a Twinkie inside, especially when buying from eBayTurrican wrote:Now another question to keep this awesome thread alive: are you collectors of sealed stuff ever haunted by nightmares at night, that inside the precious cover there may be a defective cartridge or cd?
