"La Haine" Is a class French film, pity when I watched it the subtitles were practially invisible. They were white and the film was black and white. Not sure if the film is supposed to be black and white though, was maybe the wrong dvd region.
Its almost like the french version of 'Kids', damn I cant even remember if Kids is the actual name of the film I'm thinking about....

in that case OPX...
"El Dia de la Bestia" or "The Day of the Beast" - great Spanish horror movie with a shitty dub. i want this movie subbed very much, but in the US it was only released on VHS, dubbed for the rental market. *raspberry*
also, been trying to find that album by Def Con Dos, but that's another story.

If talking about great British movies.
Italian job (1969 Michael Caine)
Wicker man
Shallow Grave
I really enjoyed "North west Frontier" but thats an old one and only available on DVD in France.
Lock stock and 2 smoking barrels
Snatch
Restless Natives (VHS only I think)
Shaun of the Dead is quite new and funny

Check out "Brotherhood Of The Wolf." It's a french film that mixes up Martial Arts, Werewolves and assasins in the mid 18th century pre revolution France. Entertaining stuff.

You're right though, its a top film. It starred Vincent cassel who had also been in 'Doberman', which was another gloriously violent, anti-establishment french flick!
From the same period(but Belgian, i think), was 'Man Bites Dog'. This-like La Haine-was black and white and was a black comedy about a serial killer who had a film crew following him around while he is committing the acts, as they're filming a documentary on him!
I think theres a message somewhere about the media's portrayal of violence, but whatever, a very very funny film.

I believe that was called "The Idiots." That movie kind of pissed me off as i work with adults who have learning & physical disabilities and it just wasn't very well done at all.MovingTarget wrote:I second shaun of the dead![]()
Has anyone seen that danish film about the guys who pretend to be retards in publc? Its fuckin wierd and kinda depressing.

Brotherhood of the Wolf was indeed excellent.
comment about Man Bites Dog though. when i saw this movie i watched it on VHS and liked it ok, but after telling a few people about it, i found out something about the uncut version. i'll just say that apparently the crew isn't so sympathetic after all.
also, wondering about those who have seen it on both formats. did you feel differently after seeing it, given the different content?

Forgot to mention "La Scorta"; great Italian action/drama about these guys who are guards of this judge in Sicily who's in danger from the Mafia whom he's investigating.
Also check out "Four Days In September"; about the 1969 kidnapping of an American consular official in Brazil by a group of young Marxists. Great action flick, and the scenery in Brazil makes me want to move there!
Can't think of any non-political/cultural themed ones, but then again, I was a Political Science Major, and every week there was a different foreign film showing at the university I attended.
I would LOVE to see Hotel Rwanda; that looks fabulous!

I gotta second this one. I actually saw it several years ago in a theater, and subtitled to boot. I've been looking for a DVD release ever since. I guess I have to keep looking.captain ahar wrote:"El Dia de la Bestia" or "The Day of the Beast" - great Spanish horror movie with a shitty dub. i want this movie subbed very much, but in the US it was only released on VHS, dubbed for the rental market. *raspberry*

I have to also give props to Michele Soavi's excellent Dellamorte Dellamore, a neat flick that comes off as a strange mix of Lucio Fulci and Federico Fellini. Highly recommended...

Scum is about a prison in the UK, it follows the lives of some inmates. It graphically shows a bunch of guys screwing a young guy up the ass, who then commits suicide by slitting his wrists.MovingTarget wrote:Scum rings a bell, could you give a brief summary of the film?
If you have seen it you will recognize this line "Did you bring a tool, what Fing tool?" or "Who's the Daddy now then aye"
If you are English you will recognize some familiar faces from Grange Hill and Brookside

Its very dark and disturbing and features scenes where pool balls are used in socks as weapons and all sorts of other creative things too.
I can't remember much about it to be honest, I watched it on channel 4 in the UK and have never seen it available on video or DVD.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
It starred Ray Winstone (King Arthur, Nil By Mouth etc) and Phil Daniels (Quadrophenia) and the film is grim as fuck! It's set in a borstal/young offenders unit and has that documentry fly on the wall feel about it. i don't know about the USA, but it's freely available on video & DVD here in the UK.neorichieb1971 wrote:Scum is about a prison in the UK, it follows the lives of some inmates. Another utterly fantastic film that i urge you to see is "The Devils Backbone" by Guillermo del Toro, who directed "Hellboy", "Blade II" and "Cronos". It's a Spanish horror/ghost story set during the Spanish civil war in an orphange. Genuinely creepy stuff and highly recommended.
Check out "Cronos" as well, if you can. Fantastic vampire movie with a twist.

As far as i can recall, there was another film crew following another serial killer about and they ended up having a shoot-out.
What happens at the end of the uncut version?

Seriously. My favorites are Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Stray Dog.This thread is sadly lacking any Akira Kurosawa movies.
Yojimbo and Sanjuro are classic samuri movies, no way around it. Stray Dog is an awesome post WW2 cop story starring Mifune and Shimura, very underated.
For a more subtle taste, get your hands on some Ozu; Early Summer, Tokyo Story and Floating Weeds are great choices!
Also, get the chineese movies Raise the Red Lantern and To Live.
I thought Man Bites Dog is a French movie? Check out Rififi, it's an old French caper flick, the robbery/safe cracking scene is awesome.
Hitchcocks older British movies are great as well, The lady Vanishes etc.
