I agree. Under Defeat puts Raiden III to shame in every department.
last i remember rank went down in a game when you died, not up
Umm, are you thinking of Border Down? As far as I remember, Under Defeat lowers rank when you die, and I've even read that it's a good strategy to suicide on the first boss to keep rank manageable.
die with 0 bombs with 2 lives left -> 3 bombs with 1 life left, rank goes up due to it being more heavily influenced by bomb count than lives
so long and tanks for all the spacefish unban shw <Megalixir> now that i know garegga is faggot central i can disregard it entirely

The rank increases in Under Defeat are extremely miniscule, compared to other games. If you're any good at the game you'll be playing on full rank anyway. This is not some Yagawa shmup.

Well, I just don't know...but I think that Raiden III have a different feeling from Raiden DX and the other Raidens. It's not just a "upgrade" or a reformulation...It's a different game, for better or for worse.
And I say it again...It's a well balanced game, just like the other Raidens.

Again, it doesn't have the kind of secrets found in Raiden DX, but it is once more designed for double play.
Sorry CIT. Wasn't quite sure. Is it actually designed for single player double play, or did you just mean it's desined for two player?
I know you're a regular and reliable poster here, so I'm guessing you meant actual double play (with one player controlling both), but it seems amazing a game would actually be designed for that...
I revisited raiden III last night and it was a lot better than I remembered.
cons: it's hind of hard to see everything through the colorfull and rather high contrast graphics. It would be better if they could tone down the backgrounds a bit or something.
Pros: I remembered it being frustrating and hectic and just kind of all over the place. But last night, it seemed just like a beefed up raiden II-- slow ship, barely effective-enough weapons, intense snipe-ey gameplay, fast spreads going off in your face on the bosses. And it all seemed pretty ballanced. I like the graphics style, too, -like super fine vesion of N64.
