Of course if you look after a console it should last longer than if you didn't, but who's to say how much longer? Should my Saturn fail in 10 years time, I could look for a replacement, but it might not be as easy to find one then as it is now. Having a spare now might save me some hassle later on down the line. It gives me peace of mind.

it gives me a piece of mind to buy it new myself and treat it well for as long as it's in my possession... so far its worked except for sony products. still all i did was get a new drive...

you can still find nintendos, ataris, pc engines ect at equal if not far less than the retail price was, new.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I try to have more than one of anything rare, where financially viable. I'm not going to have 2x Deathsmiles PCBs, but I do have 2x PC Engine and 2x Crime Fighters PCBs.

For the Xbox 360 I came up with a new solution. There's a conveyor belt leading from our front door to the TV, and another from the TV to the local post office. When a new 360 arrives it's automatically unboxed and swapped into place, like a belt feed system. Using belt fed 360s, I'm almost able get another one queued up before RROD happens again.

Strangely I've never had a console up and die on me. My NES still works. But then I've never owned a 360 :D .

I will get backup consoles when I have completed my collection of games for them. Not completed as in owning ALL games for them, but owning the games I want. I'm getting close now, and will probably start with buying a backup saturn as it gets the most play. Most older consoles are cheap, so I don't really see any reasons not to buy backups. They will only grow older and rarer as time passes.
