You need a TG16 period...can you get a hold of one? It cover basic shmup fancies without "million bullet" shooters turning you off the genre right away.
I've tried getting friends into shmups, but they try to start off with titles like Mushihime-sama and get turned away because of "the screens too busy" excuse.
I actually have one. I bought one back in.. .. the 90's? A while ago. If it still works is probably another story. Its probably been packed away for years.
Honestly the slower shooters bore me.. to tears. My attraction to shmups is their ability to constantly keep me on edge while working on advanced mental dexterity. Slower shmups just dont do that for me. Likewise, predictable bullet hell games I presume will also eventually bore me. I'm more than happy in trying to tackle some bullet hell games, but from the videos I've watched via youtube, they seem far too predictable.
Well, it depends what you mean by predictable. Usually patterns are aimed at you, so there is a method to dodging them, rather than memorizing safe spots. Still, once you've mastered a pattern it probably won't cause issue again (unless you are out of practice).

Any progress made in that game will, to a certain degree, carry over into other games and make them easier to get into. That's what I have found anyway.
I second Cho Ren Cha as a game to download. It's the game I'm using to get back into the loop.
