Uh, what happened to the play for fun part? There's no need to play for either the 1CC or for score if you sure don't feel like it.
As for more than 5 - well, just like you eat more than 5 dishes even if they aren't you top 5 favourites - to have some variety. The same thing gets boring after so much repetition - even if it is your favourite.
Why have more than 5 shmups if you can't beat any of them?

"This is an honest question Laughing"
Because shmups take a lot of time to get used to, and, as the old saying goes, pratice makes perfect.
Now, if your honestly getting annoyed with the gameplay mechanics of some of the shmups you own that you can't beat, THEN I'd say it's time to sell/trade some.
For example, I grew to hate Zero Gunner 2's rotation mechanic, and so I've traded it for GigaWing 2, which has a gameplay mechanic that I'm familiar with and enjoy.

To be honest, I emulate and have a lot of pirated software across various home consoles (probably more easily measured by the number of garbage bags they'd fill....well maybe not that much)
However, I do feel compelled to spend more time practicing games that I do own, and lately I have spent a lot of money buying original games and hardware.
As of now, I own over 40 original copies of shooting games (and a few borderliners), but I've only 1CC'd one. There are plenty that I will probably never play, and many more that I might just play once in a while, but I like knowing in my mind that I _COULD_ play them at any time since I have them on hand.
I can try to explain this with a food example...
Say you like to eat potatoes. In one scenario, you eat potatoes because they're all you can afford (but you still like them), even though you're constantly longing to be able to enjoy an expensive sushi dinner just once.
In another scenario, you still like and eat potatoes, but you have plenty of money and are happy with the fact that you can go out and have a nice sushi dinner on the rare occasion that you don't feel like having potatoes.
Uhm... yeah.. maybe it kind of applies here..
It still gives me a thrill when I make progress on any of of my games too, score-wise or completion-wise, and I have a lot of games where I still have progress to make!

Well, for me, I play/collect shmups for the love of 'em. And because I love 'em, if there is one that I can't beat, or that I feel is super hard, that just gives me another reason to keep playing.
I play shmups not to break scores, or to beat them; but to just enjoy them. To me, shmups are THE ONLY video game genre that WILL NEVER get old, or boring, due to it's extremely simple, and fun, gameplay; not to mention the eye candy graphics you get from numerous titles.

i prefer to have a lot of games, so i can play what i actually feel like playing rather than having to put in the closest thing...
for example you sit in front of the TV and tell yourself "oh shit, id play mars matrix in a hearbeat now", and then you put gigawing because you dont have MM...well that SUCKS.
i dont care for completion or stuff, well i do, but i might 1CC my game tomorrow as i could in 3 years, same thing really.
i was once stuct with ONLY gunbird 2 and not much else to do, while its a game i usually enjoy, ive come to HATE it at a point, but kept playing it because it was the only game i owned at that time, and because i was in the middle of nowhere, besides taking walks in the forest/hills etc...there was nothing. not that i didnt enjoy being there, but it would be better if i had some variety.

For me, I liken collecting shmups to collecting music:
In that, although I play all my games, whether it may just be a few run-throughs or seriously (a la Batsugun, the 'Pachi's, Silvergun, etc.), there will be times when I'll just feel like playing something I haven't played in a while. Maybe on some days, I just want to bust out something that, though maybe technically crappy, provides a different enough experience that I'll get some enjoyment out of it (Night Raid, etc.). It's just like music: Sure I listen to a lot of music that's generally considered by most to be great stuff (Coltrane, etc.). But occasionally, I feel like wallowing in the filth with the likes of the Antiseen.
I learned my lesson when I was much younger. As my musical tastes changed over the years, I would often sell off old records/tapes/CD's because "I didn't listen to them anymore.." But then several months or a year would pass, and I'd want to hear those old recordings again. Suffice to say, I ended up buying all of those records back.
I can't say that I feel like playing Super E.D.F. right at the moment (particularly having received Dragon Blaze today
), but on some rainy day I might, and there it'll be in my collection, ready to pop into my SNES.

Same for me these days- but I still need a couple of PCB's before I can sell the consoles.Ex_Mosquito wrote:Thats exactly why i filtered down to just 4 PCB shooters total, and whatevers on the xbox emulators. I just didnt have the patience to play them all. I find it alot more rewarding to just concentrate on a couple than fumble around on 4748476 different games.
