I got the game over the weekend and not to sound redundant, but I will sound redundant.. The game is very, very impressive. I really do not understand all the digs and negative coverage this game got before its release. It is as old school as you can get and really plays like a homage to shmups of yesteryear.

This is the type of game I have been hoping would get made, know wacky scoring systems to keep pace with or secrets or bossfest, just pure shooting the way it used to be when the Megadrive and PCE led the way.

I really pray that Triangle Service can keep up the good work and the shmup community as a whole would only have the themselves to blame if Triangle had to cease.

I guess my post with the vid link got nuked when the site went haywire.

20 Minutes of Trizeal (124 MB)

Also, again, the hidden 4th track on the bonus OST CD:
Go to track 3 and fastforward to time marker 7:00 (the actual track ends around 3:00).

More up to date, I've been heavily practicing stage 5. There's loads of chaining possibilities as well as some very complex enemy/bullet patterns in this stage (part of the level is a serious homage to Chapter 2 in Ikaruga). I think I've unlocked up to 7 credits now (I think they're time-released every hour of play.. so be sure to turn Auto Save on).

One tip for stage 5:
During the descent past the bridges, if you shoot the trains travelling along them, they leave bomb items behind.

Thanks for the video Kiken, any chance of a slimmed down version 124mb is rather big.

Also I get an error with QuickTime, Is there a way I can open and view the video with another programe?

Umm, that IS slimmed down! ;) I'm using DivX 5.1.1 as the video compression format. It looks ugly (IMHO), but it's smaller in size (by roughly 40%) than the older MPEG 4 compression I used to use.

First, what OS are you using (given the fact that you're trying to open it in QuickTime, I'm assuming Mac OS)? I know that a few folks on here use different programs to view avi's (be glad I don't use wmv format). I have 5 different video display programs on my PC, however, since I use Win 2K, I prefer to stick to Windows Media Player (it's not the greatest, but my machine seems to use it more efficiently).

Well... you've just persuaded me to buy it. I had a $5 voucher from Play Asia too so it cost me £36 including postage. not too bad.

Thanks for the vid Kiken.

I really think this game looks quite good. Some of the music is toe tapping even, I love that in a shooter. Iv'e never played Traingle Service's other game, but I think it's probobly fair to say that thier second game is quite an inprovement, eh? I mean not everyones first shooter can be Radiant Silvergun.

Are you guys all glad you heeded the call then?

First I gotta say thanx for the video man, that video really helps to give an idea of the game.

It's funny, but to me judging strictly by that video this game looks damn boring to play.
Seeing him play through the stages I was like "Where's the fun I can barely see it". Everything from the action, the enemies and the stages themselves seem dull and uninteresting, and stage 2 looks like a chor to play through, I got a feeling that will probably end up being my worst stage.
I like the fact that you can change your ship though.

To me the only parts of the game, that seemed like something I'd look forward to playing were the boss fights, even then they didn't get interesting until the stage 3 boss, that one was nice, stage 4 boss looked alright also.

The music is nice I wouldn't mind the OST, but so far to me the game just seems average.
Hopefully I can get to play it through someone, and make my final decision.

Yea, but you could say that Flying Shark or Tiger Heli or Raiden 2 look boring. They are not manic and if you were raised on manic,, well, you might find it boring. I was not raised on manic shooters, my first vert that I got into was Tigerr Heli back in the day and manic to me is the new version of the old thing.

Yeah, it is all what kind of game you are into. I really dig the toaplan era stuff, and really wanted XIIStag to be great, but alas... This game looks like it will make up for it!

Maybe I'm still suffering post 56K Syndrome
I'm using WinXP it just defaults to Quicktime for some reason, I dont use WMP I just use Win Amp for music.

Well, my question got wiped out in the crash, so I'll re-ask since the game still isn't here :(

How many VMU blocks does the game's savefile take up?

Kiken (or anyone else who would know), I have a question about your weapon usage. With the exception of some parts in the fifth level, you used pretty much just the laser weapon. Was this personal preference for a straight-firing weapon, or is that the optimal way to play the game? Are any of the weapons essentially worthless? Is switching weapons frequently alright, or is it the kind of game where you're best bet is to pick a weapon and stick with it?

Also, how big a hitbox are we talking? The size befitting a game of this style, or is it manically tiny?

please quit that "y you liek manic lol" debate please, noooone mentioned manics, if some dudes prefer playing games that were released 15 years ago, will you still mention "well this aint a manic so its not for you"
id like to add that from the footage i know this is the type of game that i wouldnt play much, so to say...

for the price of the game, i could mod my xbox to play truxton (pretty much my next "to do" thing, and yes its only because i cant live without truxton anymore) it has nothing to do with manic vs old school, hell i bought raiden DX some days ago and its one of the best games i ever played (tho i will resell it and buy raiden 2 instead, since it seems more like what i was looking forward to, but its another subject)

its not my intention to fuel a fire here, but ive been reading this manic nonsense for the past couple weeks and its getting boring.

That more or less expressed my thoughts. All this manic-elitism is bullshit and it's turned me off even moreso to the game.

In short, DDP >>>>> Tiger Heli LOL.

I know there have been some pretty heated debates on this, but I don't think Brian's post was imflammatory. Rather he was just stating the sort of obvious thing, like saying 'well, if you don't like spicy food, you probably won't want to order that dish...'. I guess you can see it as condenscending if you want, but I think Brian was just trying to be helpful.

blah, it's just this whole conformist attitude in general.

I like both types, honestly manic is a vague term anyways. People on the board have tried to settle on a definition in the past and they really can't (much like shmups themselves though  )

This is true. Most people refer to psikyo's games as more 'old school', but Dragon Blaze is the most 'manic' old school game I've ever played. Never mind that even some ancient shmups do a bit of bullet curtain business from time to time. The definitions DO break down, but I also think that if someone is saying 'I only like X and no games like Y', and you know that a game is like Y, there is nothing wrong with warning a player off. Still, you are right, the definitions only hint at the real thing at best.

This thread is too valuable to turn into a bickering thread.

Brian's original comments were entirely respectful, yours less so.

alpha:

I stick to the laser because it has a small focussed hit area (right in front of the ship). This make chaining the bonus items easier since I know that only something directly in front of me is going to get hit.

I also find that the laser is the strongest weapon out of the three.

All this "Manic-elitism" has got nothing to do with my views.
So far I simply just think the game looks and plays average.
