I'm not a big fan of cross-keys either. MS7 will probably sell, and I hope it eventually gets some console port (PS2 please). After playing all the previous Neo-Geo/Atomiswave MS games on big screens, having it be DS exclusive doesn't seem fair. At least the DS can handle a 128 Megabyte cartridge, but the screen resolution bugs me a little. A single DS screen is just 256 x 192.
I'll probably be taping a quarter to that DS D-Pad. It's a shame you can't use the Sega Master System D-Pad on the DS, with the mini joystick things that screw into the center.

Dunno what the hell happened to Meeher and XXXX-Nag. Meeher still gave some words in the liner notes of the Metal Slug soundtrack anthology, so he's probably a freelance programmer doing nameless work.
Two of them went to Capcom, Akio and Atsushi Inaba, the latter of which went to Clover and subsequently Seeds.
Hiyamuta is somewhere in the game music scene. Super Sweep? Hell if I know...

It's most likely that the DS Metal Slug is designed around the resolution. Having arcade style action on the go is not unfair. It's not like the older Metal Slugs can't be played on a big screen.
There is no good reason at all why the DS shouldn't be getting its own exclusive run and gun games. The hardware is powerful enough to handle them and the 3'' screen with very little blur can handle the action. If the game turns out bad, it will most likely be the developer's fault, not the DS.
As for the D-pad, I heard it varies on the lite, but I had no problem with diagonals on fat or my friend's lite.
The D-pad on my NDSL isn't so good, but as far as I can tell, it is made from the same mould as the GameBoy Micro D-pad, but with a matte finish instead. Surely the problem must be in the plunger membrane underneath, as I find the GBM pad to have a much stiffer/clickier tactile response while the NDSL pad feels simply mushy.
I bet the NDSL could benefit from a mod similar to the UFX/Damocles mod, but getting those tri-wing screws out may be a bit trickier.
I kind of want to buy a DSL just to see if it's possible to mod...considering all the complaints. Whether it be sanding or adding shims, something _has_ to be possible. Also wondering if, in fact, it would accept grommets/actuators from a GB Micro.
The complaints are blown way out of proportion. I've played plenty of action games on the thing, including some classic shmups, and have never had an issue.

How could you have ever been excited for an SNK game if recycled graphics is a deal-breaker for you? It's their modus operandi. It's like the sun rising in the east or the change of seasons... SNK will reuse art assets until the heat death of the universe.
I wasn't bored (to death) of the same sprites by the third game.

Yeah, it's actually 3-inch...but I guess that's not GP's point. He just hates the fact that it's coming to a portable and not to JP arcades where only him and a bunch of people (from this forum) could play it.
Btw, interesting observation from IGN:
"...subtle clues indicated that the version that SNK Playmore had on display was emulating an older version…mostly in the game's resolution: the visuals seemed "shimmery" and not native to the DS screen, as if a higher resolution version was being rescaled to the Nintendo DS system's 256x192 display."
Hmmm, maybe it was planed for an arcade release first...
Nah, MS7 is just another cash-in. This happens when you use old graphics and don't bother putting any effort into porting. See Alucard in Castlevania: DoS. He moves and looks like a fucking putrid piece of shit.

You must be nuts. When I FINALLY unlocked Julus mode my eyes were greateful because they could rest on the only decently animated sprite... Alucard. Julius and Yoko were embarrassingly frame-challenged. Soma had good animation but it was drawn poorly. The sad truth was that a 1997 sprite masterwork was still better than the "new" crap.
Turrican wrote:The sad truth was that a 1997 sprite masterwork was still better than the "new" crap.
I really was wondering how much people are hyping SOTN, but the second I saw the Alucard sprite in DoS (nevermind if it is a badly recycled one or not) I thought "If the rest of SOTN is that great I really need to get this". And now it´s even coming out on the PSP.
As for the DSLite pad: I fucking hate it. It makes Nanostray way more unplayable than it already is. I never played the old PSP pad and I heard it really was a problem in shmups, but the pad on my PSP S&L is just excellent (and really big!). Ketsui being released on the DS makes me cry a little inside since I fear the experience will be ruined by the stiff d-pad. And Nintendo made good ones on the SP, Micro or the SNES. I bet they just saved some pennies on the pad this time since people are supposed to focus on the touchscreen. *rant rant rant broken record*
@UFO, was that you who asked how the PSP S&L d-pad quality is? There you have it: It´s brilliant. Played hours and hours in Gradius Gaiden with it and I have absolutely no complaints.
FrederikJurk wrote:Ketsui being released on the DS makes me cry a little inside since I fear the experience will be ruined by the stiff d-pad.
I wonder if that stiff d-pad problem only affects some DS lites. I had different experiences with in store lites and my friend's lite. One of the earlier store demos I tried was a bit stiff with diagonals, but my friend's DS Lite was fine. However, the contrast was also different from my fat DS and some games didn't look as good on it (simply changing the brightness could solve this, though). I feel the fat DS's pad and the contrast are fine, though.
I tried Gradius Galaxies and the original Gradius in Konami Arcade DS on my friend's lite. The control actually felt smoother than on my GBA SP and my fat DS. I expected the controls to be as stiff as that one DS Lite I tried in store. I was surprised.

You obviously are not reading my posts properly. I am saying Alucard's sprite in DoS looks like fucking shit compared to the original, not "Julius and Yoko's sprites in DoS look better than Alucard's sprite. " Here's a list of what's missing in Alucard's DoS sprite, with examples:
- A bunch of animation frames. Most apparent in the awkward transition of his cape when turning.
- Pixels. I'm serious. Look at his legs when he stands. One of his legs becomes a lot thinner. LMAO.
- Special effects. Alucard Sword not leaving trails of blue flame.
- Not to mention they criminally crippled him.
SoTN and DoS are two games that I've beat to death. I can notice right away if there's something not right with the character's graphics.

UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:- Not to mention they criminally crippled him.
Of course they did, he's part of a trio and is supposed to be played as such. If they had him as powerful as he got in SotN then he'd completely dominate damn near everything, making the other two characters worthless. Not that I see what this has to do with the DS, really... it's a game balance issue.
The rest of your complaints are valid, but are the result of lazy graphics porting rather than any inherant flaw in the DS itself.
I don't think it looks too bad. It's almost like MS6 on a portable. I'll buy this, but should SNK port it up to PS2, I'm still interested in a console version.
Looks like every other Metal Slug game. Which means, of course, that people'll bitch about insignificant shit and others will praise insignificant shit and the rest of us will wonder what the big deal is and just enjoy blowing some stuff up for a bit.
Recycling 10+ year old sprites in every game is called milking a franchise and that's why MS is fading into obscurity. Some companies don't seem to realize that if they treat their franchises like shit most people will do the same.

The SNK faithful don't give a shit about recycled graphics, anyone who was going to abandon them did so ages ago, the rest of Japan now knows them as the witch touching company, and the rest of America knows them as the guys who have some XBLA games. Metal Slug 7 isn't going to affect their standing either way at this point.
