I agree with this, the bullets seem to drift into you when you feel you've got yourself into a position where they should just fly past you.

OP: Lethal Thunder, Twin Cobra II and Storm Blade are easy for you're first 1cc, I recommend you use autofire though.
Just keep practicing, you don't suddenly pick up say a Cave game and clear it first go, though apparently some people cleared Mushihimesama Original mode on there first go, to do this you have to already be experienced in the genre though.

Truth. Even though they are far more expensive than in the rest of the world, it's just so well worth it. They aren't the broken down, un-nurtured places full of loud idiotic little kids, loud idiotic adults, and loud idiotic teenagers that they are in the US. I was never annoyed nor distracted nor did I ever feel the urge to smack anyone. Sometimes the employees hand out oshibori, but they know when not to distract you. And never once was I asked "How do you play this?", like I am asked quite frequently here, and at VERY inconvenient times.

By the way, Hey in Akihabara had a DDP DOJ when I was there July 2007. Also, there was even a Ketsui right by it. There are much older shmups than those too, like Raiden DX, and a 2x50" Darius II setup. At one arcade I went to, they still had the original DDP.

The few arcade games I saw in Hawaii were a buck a shot, so pretty much the same price.
By the way, Hey in Akihabara had a DDP DOJ when I was there July 2007.
Hey! has the Cave library (minus the prize PCBs). They even have both Black Label games.

Well, most places around where I live think it's insane to charge more than 25 cents for a traditional joystick game, so those were far more expensive to me. Down in Oregon, I have even heard of a nickel arcade, where even a high-maintenance game like DDR is only 20 cents. However, I've found the fancier games are the same price, or cheaper than they are here.

Since that's basically all we have here (the big, fancy gun, racing, and music games) I didn't play a lot of those. So that's probably where my original statement came from.

And that's why arcades are dead in the states. Rent & Utilies (and everything else) far outweigh the income at a quarter a pop.

If you enjoyed Gunhed, I would also reccomend you Musha Aleste on the Mega Drive/Genesis. There are also a lot of other games by that developer on the 8bit, 16bit systems, which have a similiar gameplay style but Musha is my favourite.

And I have to agree with GaijinPunch that the patterns in ESP Ra.De. are pretty difficult. At least for me it is one of the more difficult manics. Maybe a good start for manic games, besides DDP, would be Giga Wing. The game looks visually not really hot and you are relying a lot on the reflect force. But I think the gameplay is easy to get into and the bullet patterns are not that hard and can often be avoided by reflect or bombs. So it is maybe a good choice to get used to manic shmups.

You could as well check out some horizontal classics like Einhänder and R-Type Delta on PS1... or maybe Gradius V on PS2 to see if you enjoy this type of shmupping as well.

I recommend Dragon Saber for PC engine that game is a perfect beginner SHMUP title .

Roscharch from Pele Team got "converted" to shmups by Gigawing. I introduced it to him, and nowadays his score is better than mine on it, hehe :) . I think it's a great pick indeed, the game is very forgiving with the shield while being very adrenaline-indulcing.

I couldn't figure out how the scoring system worked. I more or less tried to do different things to come up with higher scores, but almost everything I did produced a similar score. Not better, but not worse either (usually).

That is the ultimate goal of any shmup title whether it's for console, arcade PCB, or PC formats -- to 1CC a game is not an everyday occurance but something that only a select few can master such a particular game title that the CPU throws at the player and the player still overcomes those obstacles...it's called "being in the zone".

Ever 1CC an arcade game session of Klax PCB? It's an easy game to learn but even harder to master...it can be done given enough practice. However, the odds are stacked against the player from achieving such a perfect run due to the CPU throwing random colored tiles at the player -- eventually the ace Klax player will discover that there isn't a set pattern but has to make do with the given tiles at the current time. More often than not, failure is what the player will experience quite a bit on the road to achieving or striving for absolute perfection of masterful gameplay. Once accomplished, there isn't any higher goal to strive for..... ^_~

1CC can be an achievement or not at all, depending on the game we're talking about. 1CCing Pulstar is no achievement (memorize and gg), or 1CCing DDP using loads of bombs (no need to dodge anything uh?) means nothing compared to scoring, say, 100M+ at it.

A lot of games rely solely on memorization (like Pulstar) to be 1CCed. And even when they don't, 1CC is not the ultimate goal you should systematically be seeking, as it often doesn't take so much skill to reach it compared to scoring high (which sometimes doesn't take much skill either).

Most of the arcade to home version ports i've played give you 3 continues on the default setting, so in order to make me feel like im not credit munching I don't try to use more then 3 credits. It makes me happy when I finish the game under these circumstances I feel like its an achievement. A lot of people would not be impressed with that, but when it comes down to it, its all about having fun (Which I am doing)

this is all subjective, on the first point - different people are good at different things so you can say that a 1cc in a certain game is no achievement - this is only from your point of view - it could be a big achievement for someone else.

on the second point i agree to score well is harder than to just survive however this doesn't make a goal of only survival redundant, to some people (like me) survival is usually more fun than scoring. i don't mean to say that scoring can't be fun that depends on the game and the person.

if i'd started playing dodonpachi/ikaruga being told that i had to chain well and stick to 1 credit otherwise it was pointless i think i'd have given up on shmups before i'd even got started :)

For me, the 1cc is just a good "marker" accomplishment. It means I've put enough time into the game to have a pretty good feel for it (especially since I always at least sort of try to play for score). I plan to 1cc the shooters that I feel are my favorites, and then later on take the top one or two of those and play them "for reals." -_^ And even once I get to that point I probably won't be able to help myself from throwing in Random Shmup X from time to time.

If I didn't limit myself to ONLY getting the 1cc, I'd never get to experience a variety of shmups at all. I'd just play Dodonpachi and Dragon Blaze for the rest of my life =P

Don't listen to Prometheus or anyone else (except me.) Just try using only one credit. Pick ONE arcade game and try it, only allowing yourself one credit.
I used to not believe in this philosophy at all, but when I tried it with Gradius Gaiden, and I finally reached the sixth stage, and heard the awesome music, and saw how incredibly beautiful it was, for the first time, after the hours of hard work, it was amazing. It was a real epiphany for me. I've never looked back ^___^

im working on twin cobra ii now, it was really hard until I learned that the P changes color and to wait and grab it when its green. Now it seems very possible to do, but I'm not sure if there are extends or not, and at what score you get them.
