Check the dipswitches... you probably turned on "Flip Screen" by mistake.henry dark wrote:My MAME version of Batrider started messing up- when I start it the screen is upside down.
Is Mame as good as a PCB or console conversion?

The TRUTH OF MAME vs. CONSOLE is in many cases down to the user.
If you're lucky, the people behind the console port will know what the arcade team was trying to accomplish and will do their best to duplicate that while making some assumptions about your display setup.
Compare this to the MAME user who does not know about various arcade CRT refresh rates, or who might become confused by terminology in MAME and changes the screen from default to "pixel aspect" because they think the screen needs to be a strange width (and yes, I made that mistake for a while
).
Also, on Batrider, I think the test shows upside down in MAME, but the game plays upright. Never seen an actual BatWider board so I can't comment.

Pro-MAME arguments;
1) The obvious; you can play the game right here and now - on the same machine you're reading this on. If your experience is unsatisfactory, learn how to configure MAME properly, and get some friggin' decent hardware and an up to date OS (I've seen 95/98/ME mentioned in this thread - GET WITH THE TIMES)
2) MAME allows some degree of 'improving' the game - DoDonPachi 60hz synched on a tated 21'' LCD with the slowdown removed through overclocking is the best possible way to experience the game - BAR FUCKING NONE. Why people insist on spending money for a compromised, inferior copy of the game for a machine that won't function anymore within 10 years IS COMPLETELY FUCKING BEYOND me. CAVE won't receive a dime if you manage to snipe that eBay PS1 copy.
3) Laggy controls - how? What CRAPPY controls are you people using? I have two Logitech Wireless Rumblepads and a Hotrod SE stick - the control is PERFECT.
As long as MAME respects the developers by not touching new games long enough to intervene with profits, your fucking self-imposed moral superiority confines entirely within your own materialist mind.
Sorry to use caps so much, but I PISS on the gotta-own-the-PCB elitist fucker mentality here. I'm in a bad mood too - and really a nice guy to be with otherwise.

This post alone will make this thread 3x times bigger than what it is now.PooshhMao wrote:Pro-MAME arguments;

I know you're serious in that post but I found your anger quite funny.
For me it's a legal thing. I like to own the real thing rather than bootleging it. It's got nothing to do with a developer receiving money for my purchase off e-bay (for example). I appreciate that not many people share my view on this, but there we go. I feel the same about music.

I play through a few FPSes a week, on average.Tigershark wrote:For me it's a legal thing. I like to own the real thing rather than bootleging it.
I definitely am not paying for some of the shit I've played - and I payed for Daikatana recently. I like to have a copy of a game I consider to be something special, but things that I'll play once in my life just to say I have, perhaps not.

Another MAME advantage (yet controversial) - it's supreme configurability and cheat system. Remember Raiden III's two-ships-controlled-by-one-player mode? You can set up *any* game to be exactly like that. You can tate any game with correct controls.
You can use MAME's excellent cheat system to modify aspects of gameplay - for example, a hotkey in Raiden Fighters that cycles all slave formations.
Or switch between laser or shot in DoDonPachi in-game.
Instead of having to faff around with RGB cables and 480p and progressive scan, there's this supremely clear display with a multitude of delicious looking overlays and filters.
Oh yes, and starting the game usually doesn't involve much more trouble than just double clicking an icon, instead of having to hook up a PCB.
...
I'll shut up before I get flamed into oblivion...
