Great soundtrack, never thought of it as a shooter though.
Forgot about Tamayo Kawamoto's works also, Raystorm has a fantastic score.

To me any game where the primary objective is shooting is a "shooter", so that includes Senko No Ronde (and also things like Space Harrier and Halo).

I realize that most people here don't agree with my definition though.

I love the Radiant Silvergun soundtrack, even though some people don´t consider it proper shmup music. Yeah, it´s more like an RPG soundtrack, but the orchestral sound and the recurring themes are just great. I also like the Ketsui track for that reason. And Ikaruga of course.

As far as commercial games are concerned: Xenon, Axelay, Jets'n'Guns (wow, almost 20 years of shmuping here :D ).
It's funny noone mentioned Kenta Cho's titles, the man is an artist!
That's the kind of tunes all modern shmups should introduce IMHO.

Gradius 3 or Thunder Force 3.

I guess 3 really is a magic number. :D

Anybody dig Dangun Feveron's funky 1970's BGM tunes?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

I just dig those funky BGM tunes straight from the Cave produced JPN Bios Dangun Feveron PCB -- although it's presented in mono, still some cool music to jive to..... ^_~

Ah, that reminds me...I must break out that mini disco ball and shine some lights on it for that complete atmospheric & ambient effect while Dangun BGM tunes are playing in the background. Groovy and far out! Yeah baby, grind your sexy ass on the pole for me... ^_~

Might have forgotten something...

Also a lot of Mega Drive, Amiga or PC-Engine shmups have nice tunes. I miss those catchy tunes sometimes even if sometimes pretty repetitive and technically limited. Though in many newer shmup soundtracks I found the music not all that great, offcourse there are exceptions.

The amount of respect Chaos Field gets in this thread is heartwarming for someone who just ordered the soundtrack online without having played the game once.

For Turrican,

You should get off your rump and buy Chaos Field for your Gamecube or Dreamcast if you have one...it's still priced very moderately affordable for the masses. ^_~

The Gamecube version of Chaos Field does output in 480p progressive scan output very nicely for component video equipped monitors or SVGA monitors (if using a modded GC Component Video cable or Japanese D-Terminal GC cable to PC SVGA output).

I do recall that the PAL Gamecube console can output in RGB Scart besides the usual RCA Composite Video + S-Video + Component Video + D-Terminal output -- neither Japanese or USA Bios GC consoles can output in RGB Scart anyways..... ^_~

Yeah... Actually, there's also a PS2 Chaos Field - how's that? I'm without DC atm, and while my cube could use some shmups, I'd have to get a freeloader and I'm not sure which games are compatible with it.

Still, Milestone = ex-Compilers, therefore I will have to try all of their games sooner or later. Chaos Field wasn't exactly praised by the press, however...

For Turrican,

Yes, I forgot about that PS2 import release of Chaos Field... ^_~

I'm sure Milestone will produce some good shmup titles in nearby future...and the gaming press is a fickle bunch -- hard to please. It's really up to the individual to try out such a shmup title and forumlate his or her opinions about it -- is just like the analogy with the Hollywood produced movies, does anybody take the movie critics' opinions seriously? No, one has to see the movie for himself or herself and only then, judge if the movie was up to his or her taste/standards. ^_~

I tried thinking of a favorite soundtrack but I keep playing the first level theme from Salamander in my head. Maybe that's my answer. 8)

I received my copy of Chaos Field OST and I must say I'm delighted - it definitely has that zanac-esque touch. Recommended to everyone.

P.S. I'm far from being an audiophile but I've been said that this cd suffers from clipping: that is, mastering at a high volume to achieve a boombastic effect while compromising the overall quality of sound.

Has anyone noticed this?

Chaos Field
Dai-Ou-Jou
Ibara
Gradius V

Honorable Mention: Ikaruga

It's like iateH said, Ikaruga's OST is good, but really shines when you see it with the game.

I'll get to listen to the Mushi OST in a bit. Coming via play-asia as I type.

Didn't Chaos Field get a U.S. release? I know it did for the GC at least since I bought it when it dropped to $20.
