I've found that I'm pretty omnivorous when it comes to alcohol. :)

Tonight I'm enjoying a couple of Whitbread Pale Ales.

Well bars are very unique in Texas how they serve their beers. I know Corona is frequently served with a lemon wedge. Maybe the practice just spread to other beers? I've also heard of a few dark Mexican beers being served with lemon wedges too. Is this supposed to be some traditional Texas or Mexican hangover prevention cure or something? Maybe an effort to make a beer look healthy courtesy of the hippies in Austin?

As for the Coors light, I can't see why your dad would order that. I mean you're in Texas and you can pick from the best of American and Mexican beers, frequently on the cheap, and you choose a Coor's light?
I've seen fruit dropped in a bunch of different beers (Hoegarden, Blue Moon, Corona etc...) but it always seems specific to the beer, not the style. Thats why I thought it was kinda curious hearing about adding lemon to light beer. Though that's probably the only way you'll get it to taste like anything. As to why he ordered it, I have no clue. It seems like the only discerning drinker in my family is my grandfather. My dad drinks american light beers and stuff like Miller High Life. My brother swears by Yuengling for some reason and complains about me spending more than $30 on a case like anything over $15 is highway robbery.

EDIT: I didn't feel like double posting. I was just looking at the Dogfish Head site and saw that the 120 minute IPA is 20% ABV. Definitely the strongest beer I've ever had.

When I was young, I always preferred beer. But it has none of the health benefits of red wine, it can give me a beer belly, and it doesn't sit well with my stomach.

I average about 2 drinks a day. On weekdays: red wine. On weekends: gin martini.

In a more general beer discussion, I can say I can't stand the light beers.

I'm not talking about commercial or micro-brewery anymore, but rather that most of the well known commercial beers belong to the light beer catagory, and I can't stand any of it. It has no body, little taste--I really don't get the appeal.

Beyond this however, my pallette is really open, and there's plenty of just OK beers that I'll enjoy when the time's right.

One brewery I just don't get is Sierra Nevada--I think I don't like a single one of their beers. Every beer they have tastes slightly wrong to me; like somethings off about it. I don't get it.

That out of the way though, I'll always enjoy a good IPA, brown ale, wheat ale, belgian, stout, barely-wine ale. Even really light ales (note the distinction betwen lighter ales and 'light beer') can be fantastic.

Fortunately there are plenty of small pubs around here that brew their own beer--and of course THAT is one of the biggest differences in beer you'll find.

I've heard it argued that beer does have some health benefits if consumed regularly and in moderation, but I'll be damned if I can remember what they were supposed to be... :(

Yeah, beer is supposed to lower cholesterol, chances of heart attack, and chances of stroke.

I'm pretty sure it does things to prevent urinary blockage, given ya pee all the frekin' time after breakin' the seal.

Still, the drawbacks outweigh the benefits.

Brother you are preaching to the choir on that one. Every one of their beer tastes awful. I also feel the same way (albeit to a much lesser extent) about Samuel Adams.

I would also recommend Smithwicks Irish Ale to anyone who likes that kind of beer. Nothing to special but pretty good for what it is. Made by the brewers of Guinness.

It's supposed to lower cholesterol, eh? How come so much of it is seen as being incredibly 'fatty', then? I think there's around 100-150 calories in the average pint, which is no problem for the average quaffer.

It's us bottomless-pit fish-drinkers who have to watch out.

yeah...it doesn't look too good on paper either.

Don't mind me, this is the college learnings talkin'

Calories and Cholesterol are still two different things. While Cholesterol is the actual fatty substance people do not wish to have, Calories are not anything of physical shape. Calories are a measurement of energy determined by the drinks you down or the food you eat.

Now, basic human molecular mumbo-jumbo suggests that a person who fails to do enough physical activity to burn the energy released from those calories drank will then have this energy converted back into fat (cholesterol) for the body to store for a later period.

So are these craaaaaazy studies lying about drinking actually burns your cholesterol? Probably not. But that little bit of fat you may be burning with the booze is easily offset by sitting around drinking more brew and not running those 150-something calories off per pint when you hit the pub...and thus..the excess calories (energy) gets converted back to cholesteral, and some extra pounds are added on top of that. Therein, the cycle repeats itself, and that is how you create the beer belly.

Concluding, those benefits of drinking don't really help anybody unless you're downing a pint then running a mile afterwards....you know....completely defeating the reason you wanted to sit around and drink the pint in the first place.

Cheers, that sounds about right.

I did know that calories are just a measurement, though! :P

I tend to walk about 6 miles a day, so I'm sure that helps. I've stopped boozing for the time being anyway, of course. I'll bear all this in mind when I return to the bottle for furious make-up sex.

Sorry, I shouldn't have said that beer has NONE of the health benefits of red wine; I believe, though, that it lacks the antioxidants that make red wine better for you than white.

A general comment: I have mostly moved beyond sweet drinks. An occasional margarita or whisky sour is ok, but as I said above I'll generally take a martini given the choice. Though, I once had a sour apple martini, and that was sweet, sour and awesome.

Seconded. I never would have thought to try it, but for some reason the barmaid kept trying to push it on me (instead of the Killian's I ordered).

Me and my friends we drink Hertog Jan. Hertog means something like duke or something silly like that. Heineken is piss, yet I feel proud to see it in the rest of the world.

Hertog Jan is de HDMI/VGA cable of the beers.
Matter of fact, this thread has made me thirsty.
Hold on............
Just popped one.
Any serious beer drinker (I don't know what that means) should get a hold of a bottle. I'm sure you can get it somewhere, right?
It's just normal beer like Heineken, but better. Not some strange exotic lager or anything like that.
Choice for hard liquor is whiskey on da rocks.
'Da Click - Let's get drunk' would suit this thread perfectly

hehe, word up on the Hoegarden GP. I've become a bit stricken with it lately. I was dissapointed to learn that it's pronounced like "who-garden" instead of "hoe-garden". I'll be sticking to the latter pronunciation...

Neat, didn't expect that to be around in Tokyo. It's my fav. 'white beer' brand although I generally only drink it during summer (slice of lime optional).

Other then that Tiger, Corona, Grolsch, Asahi, Becks, Polar and Amstel all taste fine to me.

For stronger stuff I generally stick to just Finlandia vodka: pure , with coke, orange juice, kahlua & cream...mmmmmm.

For my 22nd birthday me and this girl just split a 12 pack of Red Stripe. That was the only beer I've had that I can actually say I enjoyed. I have no idea how to tell one from another. Unless you did some kind of metaphor comparing them to shmups. What's the Radiant Silvergun of beers?

Quality beer mate! I sup quite a few of the strong Belgian beers as i don't really drink a great quantity of ale and they've got great flavour. Leffe and Hoegarden are a couple of cracking beers too. We have a lot of 'ye old' kinda pubs in our neck of the woods, and they serve some great Belgian beers alongside some fantastic real-ales, which all have bizarre names like 'White Dwarf' and 'Black Pear'. The worst thing about them is that as they're so easy to drink, you can quickly forget how many you've had...till your banging head reminds you the following morning.

Other than beer i love my wine and my whiskey. Red wine as a rule, something French like a St. Emilion or a Cotes de Nuits is just spot on - especially if i've got a nice hunk of cheese to accompany it. :D

Used to be really into Hoegaarden but it's mainly Guinness at the moment. I do like the odd glass of Belgian beer.

In places like Prague in the Czech Republic the beer is spose to be amazing. I don't know if it's brewed better or they look after the pipes/ taps better (probably the later). Trouble with the UK, alot of people are lazy and don't give a toss with a as long as I'm alright jack attitude. :( I think that is why Guinness is better in Ireland, because they look after it better. All the UK's Guinness is brewed there now FFS. No excuses.

The other day this freakin' dumb ass tried to tell me that Kirin Ichiban sucks because Kirin is owned by Budweiser. He tells me this as he orders Asahi Super Dry the supposed "superior Beer". Which is total bullshit because I know for a fact that Asahi Super Dry was designed to be the total middle of the road beer that has the most moderate taste for the largest amount of people.

Japanese beer basically sucks for the most part but i'll take Kirin;s extra bite over Asahi's boring Toyota Carolla-like taste.

I joined Super Laydock in Bergen Op Zoom for his favourite tipple: Duvel. Beers should start at 8%!!
The Mrs has worked in Belgium for the last 2 years, so I've been hitting a lot of Chimay, Westmalle, Val Dieu, St Feullien and many other strong Trappist/Abbey ales.
StaroBrno is a very good Pilsner, as is Boris Becker's favourite Pilsner Urquell. I still prefer the stronger brown Belgian beers though.

Also a big fan of Beligan beers, especially blondes. I was at this place yesterday where a friend of mine works, called Monk's Café. They have ~2000 different brands of beer from all over the world in stock, and a whole lot of quality stuff on tap. Be sure to pay a visit if you're in Stockholm. :)

Lots of beer drinkers, eh? Never been a big fan of beer, myself. A 40 or two of High Life is good for a BBQ or campfire here and there, but personally, I'm preferential to Vodka. All sorts of vodka, from all sorts of countries; I'm deturmined to try them all if it's the last thing I do (which, coincidentally, it probably will be). Some of the best I've tried are Shakespear, Six Ultra Premium (leaps and bounds above regular Six), Russian Standard, Greygoose (so boring though), Gvori and Roth. Matter of fact, as I type this very message, I'm enjoying a cool custom mix with Belvedere (a can of 7up, two shots of voddy, a dash of white zin and a single red grape; I call it the Sunset). For the most part though, give me a blunt or a bong over a bottle any day.
