Linux Shmups (updated)
Kxmame, works great for me without the headaches of setting up SDLMAMEDanbo Daxter wrote:I really hate SDLMAME... runs slowly with frame skipping and random segfaults for me. also if i try to run it fullscreen it can lock up the whole computer forcing a restart. linux is useless for most things

There is a Wine client for intel macs now called Crossover, thought I'd tell about it here...
Here are the games I've gotten to work with it so far. I'm using the lowest end intel mac which is the mac mini, though.
Crossover Games 7.2.0:
Patriotdark - runs great, doesnt play music (cant play .ogg files)
Cho Ren Sha 68K - music glitches, otherwise perfect
Kamui - Runs great when not windowed. music doesnt play on some of the levels... I'd recommend turning it off and listening to your own, the midi music also makes the game lag.
Blue Wish Resurrection Plus - Runs great, no music. remember to change the second number on custom.dat to 1
Eden's Aegis - same as the above
Warning Forever - runs perfectly
Guxt - no music

SDLMAME has always run smoothly on my machine. Even before I upgraded from Athlon XP 2200+ to 2x64 bit core. Manual compile is necessary.
No surprise, emulators, usually being opensource runs great on many OSes.
I'd like to see more games for linux though. Especially in the face of online distribution like steam. Windows is the reason we can't have nice things. And why I do my gaming on consoles.

Yes-currently having a lot of good fun with a lot of good emulators on Linux for PC Engine,NES, SNES,Genesis and Amiga and,of course xMame.
Can't find a working Linux X68000 emulator though-any bright ideas?

Mednafen has some retarded forced triple buffering design, so it's no good for STGs.

When I played it, it was exactly the same as in Windows. Perfect.Ed Oscuro wrote:There's already music glitches in Windows, though.Zaarock wrote:Cho Ren Sha 68K - music glitches, otherwise perfect
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

As stated in the readme, SDLMAME requires (decent) hardware accelerated 3D to work properly for scaling.Danbo Daxter wrote:I really hate SDLMAME... runs slowly with frame skipping and random segfaults for me. also if i try to run it fullscreen it can lock up the whole computer forcing a restart. linux is useless for most things
If you're running shitty video (onboard Intel, for example) or are using a 3D driver that's lacking (say, the open source NV driver instead of Nvidia's own driver for Linux), then performance will be shit.
I've got three Linux boxes (workstation, MythTV box and laptop) all running SDLMAME without dramas.
Neither SDLMAME nor Linux are at fault. Your setup is.
Re: Linux Shmups (updated)
gotta agree with Elvis on that. I've been using sdlmame for a while on a simple lower midrange desktop with proper drivers installed for sometime and the experience has always been perfect.

The nv driver is actually Nvidia's driver too.the open source NV driver instead of Nvidia's own driver for Linux
Re: Linux Shmups (updated)
Since 2003, yes Nvidia have "owned" the FOSS driver. (As much as anyone can own anything open source).Ex-Cyber wrote:The nv driver is actually Nvidia's driver too.
I meant to differentiate between the FOSS (MIT) licensed "nv" and the proprietary "nvidia" modules.

Re: Linux Shmups (updated)
Slightly off topic, but is Intel's video performance in Linux *that* bad? Namely since I'm getting a new laptop, and the first thing I'm doing with it is ditching Vista, and dropping XP and Linux onto it, and the new laptop is probably going to have integrated video [because I'm a cheap bastard with a price range of $599 or less]...

It was, but Intel have been putting a massive effort into their FOSS drivers.null1024 wrote:Slightly off topic, but is Intel's video performance in Linux *that* bad?
There was a bug in Ubuntu 9.04 which caused some dramas, but that's been fixed. Given the constant improvements on drivers, I don't think you'll have any problems with Intel video. Don't expect massive framerates from heavy 3D games, but it'll be good enough for most things (including SDLMAME scaling).
