Yes you did. However, I wouldn't call Gaiares mediocre. There are 2 schools of thought on the game: 1 school believes it's one of the greatest shmups ever made, the other considers it an average or above-average game but not the masterpiece that the others do. I'd say there's enough consensus in the shmup fan-base to say that Gaiares is above mediocre.
Very true, you don't hear people bashing Gaiares for being bad. There are 2 schools of thought on Gaiares bashing: 1 school believes it's way too difficult with pea shooters that do as little damage as the "dink" sound they make on bosses and is thus not a fun game, while the other considers it vastly overrated for generic horizontal gameplay (of course, members of this other school certainly can't claim to enjoy Einhander either lest they appear to be hypocrites).

Of course, Xexex is considered at least above average by nearly everyone on this board, it seems, as well.

Never heard of Motoi Sakuraba? I'm guessing you're not a big RPG fan. He's composed a gazillion tunes, many under Wolf Team. IIRC, his only other shooter piece was in Granada, which has even better music IMO (although the game itself is fairly poor).

My vote goes to Gun Frontier. Clunky (but enjoyable) gameplay, super stylish, great music. Taito was trying something new, and like Metal Black it doesn't really work, but I can't help from loving it.

You guessed right. I hate RPGs. I've tried to get into several of them, but I hate wading through all that text and all those menus just to get to the...oh, that's right: there IS no action! I'm all about Art in games and all, but I have to have something to keep me interested.

Back on topic, I'm adding the Lynx version of Raiden to my list of underdog shmups. Yeah, it sucks, and it's nothing compared to the original, but I think people don't realize how playable it is. I really like it. Of course, there's also the fact that I'm an Atari fanboy...

Shooter: Space Shot rarely gets mentioned. I actually think it's a pretty decent shmup too. It's not GREAT, but still playable.

Major Stryker

Pretty decent first shot at a PC shmup by one of the kings of the shareware age. It's freeware now.
