Insert Credit has a link to a Game Watch page which apparently confirms the inclusion of tate mode for this upcoming volume. :) (Though for some reason only yoko screenshots were shown for Scramble Formation...) Also, it'd seem, Darius II will be super-zoomed out, if the screenshot on the GW page are any indication. Of course, Recap couldn't help but mention the presence of upscaling off to the side.

Even further off to the side, the same post mentions that Taito's apparently releasing a new Kiki Kaikai game for the PS2...I imagine a new thread for that one might pop up (maybe in off-topic, if the game's not shmuppy enough) as more info becomes available on that.

It definately is weird, unless the first one just tanked over here; but I don't know the sales figures for it.

I don't suppose there's a snowball's chance of this new Taito Memories getting a US release?

We are definitely not seeing the new Taito Memories over here in its original form - some of the games on there (like Defender) are licenced from other companies who have already put out compilations here.

I saw a huge pile of Taito Legends in a bargain bin for $10, so I think it really did tank. Not that my anecdote is proof :)

Yeah, but I'm too stubborn :mrgreen: , I want my console ports.
But just think how nice those games will look when you put the ROM folders (yes, the PC version uses ROMs) into MAME. No swimming graphics, no fuzziness... just clean, properly scaled pixels.

Well I found out that Taito Legends 2 for the PS2 has a 50/60 selector so if you have a means of playing imports then go for it. Of course I'm speaking to the non PAL users here. :wink:

Are you saying that someone like I, who lives in the US, can play this game on my NTSC television? If this is what you are saying, I will get this right now.

not so easy, unfortunately. Your american PS2 must still be modded to read PAL titles, regardless of the 50/60hz selector.

EDIT: I have a Swap Magic that I use to play Japanese titles. Is there something that needs to be modified beyond that? If so, I'll just wait for Taito Memories 2.

Riku Kai Kuu Saizensen (Land Sea Air Squad) is decent for a Commando type game, especially when you can take tanks, boats, and helicopters.

Warrior Blade should be great on widescreen sets. It's better than Rastan II, though it plays more like Golden Axe.

Full Throttle is very good, and the speeds you can reach on this one get pretty sick (400 Km/h feels like 400). Composed by Mar, FT's soundtrack rocks.

Final Blow hasn't really aged well. I didn't mind it on Genesis as James Buster Douglas Boxing, but today it's kinda meh. Top Ranking Stars would be better.

Mega Blast is kind of ho-hum considering it's a Taito shooter.

Thunder Fox is far better than the Genesis one. You can steal jeeps from the enemy, and stage 2 even starts out with a brief horizontal shmup sequence with you in a gyrocopter. The boss order is slightly different from the Genesis game- the tank you fight in stage 4 on that one is the first boss on the arcade.

EDIT: OMG I am sorry. There is Tate. I missed the option for it, but yes, there is glorious Tate for the vertical orientation games! w00t!

I just received my copy of the first volume today. Couldn't wait to get home from work to mess with it some more. If you have any questions about it, let me know. But it's basically the same interface as the first two Taito Memories.

A few notes:

Darius II does not have the zooming feature from the Saturn version. Instead, you are given a choice of playing the game in 8:3 or 4:3 ratio. Both settings have the entire playing area in view without having to zoom. The 8:3 is interesting and may take some getting used to, but I didn't have trouble seeing the bullets thankfully. The 4:3 is of course, strange looking, but if you prefer bigger sprites and bullets then this is the preferred setting.

One more interesting thing I noticed is that the games on this collection which were featured on the Taito Legends release had the score table keeping fixed. What I mean is, some of the games on Taito Legends allow you to continue but allow your score to stay the same. This broke certain games such as Continental Circus and Exzisus (you could continue over and over getting infinite points). On the Taito Memories disc, those games now resetyour score if you continue. This is helpful if you want to get to the end of the game by credit-feeding but don't want to ruin your score tables. I don't know if that is arcade-perfect or not, but I welcome the change.
