Oh, that's helpful. Looks real simple when you have diagrams and everything. Thanks, man!

You think? I like him. The second phase is boring, but all his first form's attacks are fun to dodge, and if you save up hypers you can get ridiculous chains off him easy. Get both those score extends at once, it's great.

you're probably just more practised than me, this is the toughest shmup I've played so far and in struggling with that boss right now. I don't like the way the slowdown kicks in and out, throws me off for some reason. rest of the stage is pretty simple after that thing.

Yeah, you gotta keep destroying the ship turrets at a regular pace or it speeds up too much. Once you've got that down he's not too bad. Especially since there are those bullet cancelling turret buildings everywhere, and hopefully a level 10 hyper saved up. Makes it nice and easy to get both score extends.

Playing this less and less frequently now. Probably only once every 4-5 days and at that volume of play the rate of regression is evident. Think I'm pretty much done with the game as a whole.

Lost interest once it became clear that novice stage 5 was going to be a 30 hour grind-fest in training mode; well that and just a general loss of interest in playing it or anything else.

Life is tedious and frustrating enough without doing all that shit again in my spare time.

Novice Expert?

Because I was able to clear Novice Shot pretty quick as well as 360 Mode Shot, though Hibachi almost ruined the one score attack 360 Mode run I tried. Didn't play the Novice mode stuff in score attack. Have not tried Novice Expert or 360 Mode Laser, but have been stuck at stage 4 in version 1.5 or 1.00.

Though that Stage 3 boat, I haven't managed to actually figure out yet. I can get to it with level 9-10 Hyper if I ignore Hypering until that point, but then I still end up getting hit or breaking the combo so don't get much out of it. I need to watch some replays. I'm terrible at that stage 4 1-up as well.

Plank pls.

I imported a german person* who have never played with a controller before and asked him to do A-S Novice and he succeeded on his first credit. It's not a 30-hour grindfest. You are just really bad.

*no joke, this really happened. He's here right now and he has less than 10 hours of experience in Cave grand total. He's primarily Touhou player.

Precisely. Better to stop now before I go committing loads of time to it and feel obligated to play it for 2-3 hours every day.

The whole path is a bit of a dead-end road anyway. Even if I do clear it all I can do is try to score in novice. There's no way that arcade is ever going to be playable and that's really all I ever wanted to play in the first place.

What do you mean ? I've never felt like I regressed at any STG, if anything a short break is often helpful.

I find it a fun game to improvise in, without any set goals in mind.
You could also try out 360 mode, it's fun and forgiving.

Plank, this is obviously driving you insane, why not try playing something else and come back to sdoj in a while.I find a break usually helps, how important is it to clear this anyway?

Guys, the touhou player zengeku meant is me. what he is trying to tell you isn't that I am new at shmups, but that I started playing the game with a controller yesterday, and never played SDOJ before and cleared on my first credit. (finished 0/1, so it was really shit). outside of touhou, I probably don*t have more than 20 hours in all shmups combined (like 10 in CC;5-6 in ketsui and everything else is a matter of mere minutes). I don't play CAVE games much and the aggressive approach is new to me since it's not really necessary in touhou unless you score.

I am not really a novice to shmups, but I am to non-touhou ones. or to using controllers - I used a keyboard all these years.

and 30 hours isn't much DTP, stop whining.

Not particularly important. It's not even the mode I wanted to play, it's just that the rest of the package is pretty much unplayable so I was trying to extract some value out of the purchase before it goes on the shelf indefinitely.

I think I just need to find something else to play. Just tried Ketsui but it's harder than I remember it being and too hard to be interesting. Gave DFK:black a quick run; still as ridiculous as ever. As much as I like CAVE's games I think I'm just going to call it quits. All of their games are just too hard, and once you think about trying to clear them they turn in grind-fests which are the exact opposite of fun, and consume immense amounts of time daily. If you aren't playing 2-3 hours/day minimum you are getting nowhere, and even then you're probably making absolutely miniscule progress. I just can't be bothered to play them that much and have it feel like joyless work because the results aren't coming.

I'd go play some old 2D shooters but I'm not really mad about them. Bullet-hell is all that I'm really interested in with this genre.

Even though I play mainly Cave games I can do better at Raizing shmups vs someone who isn't experienced. I don't understand the "I'm only a Touhou-player" argument.

Bullshit.

Just do a break, thats what I did, I tried some other things for a few month, gave myself some time to forget my frustrations and achieved much faster progress afterwards.

Absolutely false. I almost never play even 2 hours/day. Most of the time it's just one or two credits per day unless I really want to practice, in which case it'll end up being maybe 2 or 3 hours.

Then why think about trying to clear them? I am rubbish, and doubt I will ever clear a non-movie mode. But I play to have fun, and don't worry about it too much. I work 8 hours a day. I don't want my leisure time to be unpleasant also.

Plank,I know you've said before that you don't like arrange modes but 360 mode really is fun.Its nowhere near as brutal as any of the other modes, there's no way you won't make to the final boss! Give it a go,you might as well if trying to get some mileage out of the purchase.

Hardly the first genuine difficulty I've encountered. My posts on this forum are like an encyclopedia of what is wrong with CAVE games.

...but I'm absolutely done with it all. Every muscle in my body aches, I've had about 5 hours sleep in the last 4 days, I just don't want to play anything let alone games whose soul purpose is to stitch you up and irritate you. I stuck in 4 different games today and found them all to be ridiculous in their own special ways.

I'm gonna leave these alone until I feel a lot better.

I am curious DTP...what games (shmups specifically) do you consider to have "fair" difficulty?

You can't. It's a unique feature of this port that it can't be done here, whereas it could one way or another in all their other ports.
