I'm sure you are probably right. I was just putting the whole discussion out there since it seemed to have not been discussed elsewhere.

Go play some novice..... I wanna know what your best score is ? :)

I don't own an X360. I just have the arcade board.

I have definitely played the fourth boss and not gotten the extend, when I swear I didn't bomb. Maybe it doesn't trigger on novice/novice expert. Or maybe I'm just crazy.

Pretty sure you have to not bomb at any point in stage 4 to get it.

Might be wrong though.

You can bomb before it. I autobombed on purpose in my clear video on the swarm before him to make sure I went into him with none in stock.

I can confirm that the followin happened when I played: It does trigger on novice. It does trigger when you auto-/normal bomb before it. It does trigger when you hyper during the fight (at least on novice  ).

So you're saying it always triggers on Novice, or what? Because it definitely doesn't always trigger on Novice Expert. I can't even remember ever getting it outside of training.

The requirement is that no bomb is ever happening while the midboss is alive.

Which means, if you bomb during the popcorn rush immediately before, and the midboss itself activates in the last frame of the bomb, you won't get the extend.

Well after Futari's incredibly boring novice mode, I wasn't expecting much from this, but SDOJ's novice mode is incredibly fun and challenging (at least for a beginner like me). Just got my first clear of it. :D

I had a couple of lingering questions though. Could anyone clear these up for me?

A few times, my hit counter turned red and I fully lost chain, but I wasn't bombing. What could cause this? (I'm guessing I just lost chain for too long, but I'm not sure)

I figured that if distance had any effect on the laser, it would be to do more damage up close, but I was noticing that the first boss never got a chance to do his final pattern if I stayed at the back of the screen, but could start it if I moved closer occasionally throughout the fight. Does the laser's damage scale inversely with distance, or was this something else?

Losing a chain during a hyper will cause a full chain loss. Manual bombinb will never cause a full chain loss, but auto-bombing will always cause a full chain loss.

Laser damage is constant unless you get way up close to an enemy, in which case your laser "aura" will also be hitting it, resulting in double laser damage. I'm not sure why the first boss appears to be dying sooner sometimes, unless you're hypering/bombing sometimes. Bombs do pretty significant damage.

If nothing else, I have a relative that could probably do that. I'll look into this solution then. Thank you for your answers people.

It means something like super or ultimate. So, "Ultimate Blissful Death"
While I cannot say so for sure, i always read the title as Maximum Death or Greatest Death because 最大 = greatest,  largest,  maximum and 往生 would mean death (among other things)
Yea, I'm just going to refer to this game as Super DOJ from now on. lol

Just a quick question: What size are the original arcade instructions of this game?

Still haven't cleared this on novice... :\

Haven't even reached the final boss in a proper run. Inclined to think it's probably not gonna happen now.

Dude, i'm pretty sure that unless you are playing with a seriously bad input device, you should be able to clear this game. If you can't, please find a way to set up a stream. I'm sure it would be hilarious.

I'd be more interested in watching DTP's replays in pretty much any shmup starting from Day 1 and seeing how his play changes every month or whatever appropriate time step. I really can't recall (right now) anyone else who's put in any significant amount of time in a shmup and hasn't actually gotten anywhere.

No, don't worry. I forgot to quote his comment but for the record, I was exclusively referring to the Novice shot mode. Not the arcade mode.
That one will probably take some practice to clear unless you are extremely good.

Come on zengeku, the novice mode is not an instant clear for beginners, and it WILL take some practice. Especially in this game

Well he did state that he played at least 40-60 hours of Futari and apparently he has played other games as well so I wouldn't quite label him a beginner. Of course, it's nowhere near having played anything for a long time and he obviously lacks a lot of experience, skill and consistency.

Besides, I didn't say that it has to be an instant clear. I was just saying that he should definitely be able to clear Novice. It doesn't take much skill to do a blind clear of Novice (even expert novice). Even I could do it despite being forced to use a pad for it. And I consider myself pretty horrible.

Finally there is a decent replay of Arcade HD Expert on the leaderboard. Not a high score play though.

Why is the stage 4 midboss so insane? I'd managed a 10k chain on stage 3 and everything was going daijoubu daijoubu and then he showed up and ruined everything. Two deaths because his attacks are stupid and cheap and unfair and I'm an idiot and don't know what the bomb button is. Seriously, how am I meant to kill this guy without bombing? Damn.

You will want to keep a hyper ready for him, then dodge the first few seconds of the first attack, pop the hyper then dodge the final few bullets there are left of the pattern when the bullet cancelling from the hyper activation ends. Then get yourself in position to dodge the next pattern which is done generally by tap-dodging iirc. For the next attack, you can get into a shotgun position and you'll pretty much wanna stay in this shotgun position for the rest of the fight and hopefully have him killed before he commences the attack with the fast red chunks of bullets. If not, dodge that too, it's not too bad.

This midboss shouldn't be too bad once you've gotten some practice on him so go do that. Use strategy instead of brute force here pretty much. It's probably one of the hardest extends to get in a cave game i admit but it's definitely not stupid or cheap.

Yeah, I try that, but I absolutely suck at dodging that second attack, and then once I get hit and lose my hyper I can't do enough damage to kill him before he pulls out the insane attack after the red bullets, because that one's just crazy. I grind away on practice mode and I still suck at him. I gotta try harder or something.
Man, why couldn't it be the ship that drops the extend? I like the ship. The ship is a bro, he's fun to fight and you can cancel his shots every two seconds and get a huge chain off him. The ship in Ketsui dropped an extend, why doesn't this one? My life would be so much happier.
