^^^Like the Matador collection its pretty pop oriented. Still catchy as hell but I would give it a listen before you purchase.

I saw Joanna Newsom at a festival a few years back (I am a huge fan and was captivated throughout)
I went to see her in London around the time Ys came out and it was one of the most spectacular live performances I've ever witnessed. There wasn't a dry eye in the house by the end of it, my own included.

She's easily one of the most gifted musicians I've had the pleasure of seeing.

Working my way through the incredibly long (4 CDs) 'For Philip Guston' by Morton Feldman.

I'm currently on what i'd call a 'pop sludge' phase:

Amen Ra - Mass III (Atmospheric Sludge Metal)
Battle of Mice - A Day of Nights (Atmospheric Sludge Metal)
Giant Squid - Metridium Fields (Sludge Metal)
Shels - Sea of the Dying Dhow (Atmospheric Sludge Metal)

Wait, just googled and 'sludge pop' is apparently an actual genre...

The Appleseed Cast - Peragrine. Odd space/electronic/emo rock with absolutely thunderous drumming.

That Amen Ra album is pretty good. I think stuff like Floor, Torche, or the Felon Wind would probably fall into that categorization.

Om - God is Good
Orthodox - Sentencia
Ocean Chief - Den Forste

In honour of their reformation, I'm gonna open a few beers tonight and dig out my Sunny Day Real Estate vinyl. Here's hoping they actually play England, they've cancelled on me twice before.

^^ Yeah, great band - good to hear they're back at it!

Really jamming on Orphan Project's "Spooning Out the Sea" (great prog hard rock/metal), and Darkness Before Dawn's "King's To You" (metalcore/melodeath hybrid). I wrote a review & did a video review of the latter:

I'm working on a review of the former \m/

I was lucky enough to see Sunny Day perform when they toured supporting "How It Feels To Be Something On." They put on a hell of a show playing a healthy selection of songs from all three of their released albums. I managed to grab tickets for Undamned and I to go see the upcoming reunion show as well. Here to hoping they mostly ignore "The Rising Tide" when it comes to their set list.

Currently listening to: The Beatles: "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" reissues, the latter of which sounds fucking amazing on a decent pair of headphones.

Yeah, I've been revisiting my Sun Ra collection of late... I'll recommend something in this thread in another few days.

I would recommend:

Lanquidity - Jazz funk fussion brilliance!

Magic City - Great percussion and keys based improv pieces, really otherworldly sounding.

Solar Myth Approach Vol 1&2 - Strange snatches of percussion and freakout make a very compelling album with a brilliant few vocal bits and bobs. I love Spaceways Incorporated.

Jazz In Silhouette - Great almost tradish jazz with ultra modern hints.

I'm not reneging on my promise, but going from my old impressions of Sun Ra (circa late 90's), I'd recommend:
Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy as my #1 choice
Concert for Comet Kohoutek (silly/over-the-top early 70's material, but incredible energy)
Heliocentric Worlds vol 1 & 2 (organic compositions for non-humans)

My listening of Sun Ra however was in the late 90's as a Jazz outsider, however Sun Ra's music I think more and more cannot be understood except from inside jazz. I am getting interested in his solo piano works, and am re-listening to some of his supposedly straight music and finding more that I didn't get so much out of before (Jazz in Silhouette being one, though many others.) For Ra, I think I'm finding its easier to list the disappointing albums than the good ones, as most of them are really good in one way or another.

found some nice raer/obscure/interesting lps for cheap at the weekend these are the best

quatermass-s.t (some nice heavy prog with some great downtempo moments as well, rarity as well !)

annette peacock-im the one (been searching for this for years and it's pretty damn amazing.some slow super funky tunes with some nice electronic touches!her voice is lovely)

hugh hopper-monster band (one side is hughs shit synthy sounds the other side is an awesome live set from 74. discordant b-boy drum jazz jams for the whole side..you know this cmoon ?? you'd dig it)

air-s.t (nice female vocal psych/jazz/funk/prog crossover type of stuff produced by herbie mann)

sweet smoke-just a poke (2 funky sidelong hippie jams with lots of fuzz ,organ and all that shiz)

jaques loissier -pulsion (think eminem sampled this..dope tune just to listen to with piano, drums and spooky sounds)

the meters-rejuvanation (classique)

ford theatre-s.t (strange psychedelic musical, some cool axelrod style moments!)

Health - Get Color - Brilliant album, 10x better than the first, imo. Poppier, more melodic, but still with the scraping metallic clang of their debut. Contender for album of 2009. Probably end up seeing them live in a few weeks, roar.

Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport - Slightly disappointed at the moment, given that they've shed a lot of the distortion and screaming I enjoyed so much with their first album, but it's starting to grow on me. Seeing them live on Monday, roar.

Yeah, I got their first album on your recommendation, and was looking forward to this new one. I was able to listen just once not too carefully, but I really liked what I heard so far. Indeed, I was thinking that this could be one of the best albums I've heard this year so far, though my favorite so far is definitely

upsilon acrux - radian futura

So I listened to the new Health album more carefully, and it really is a gem. Makes me think of the best of Oneida (Secret Wars!), though maybe it's even closer in spirit to The Jesus & Mary Chain.

Miki Higashino & Yasunori Mitsuda - Moonlit Shadow

This one is the original soundtrack to Taito's PS2 game "Tsukiyo ni Saraba", known as "10,000 Bullets" in its PAL release. These tunes remind me a bit of Rolling Thunder 2's soundtrack, and have been compared to Cowboy Bebop's themes. Cool stuff.
Kinect? KIN NOT.
