Ah really. I guess it probably doesn't affect too much. I was expecting it to be used for RAM, in which case it probably would have had an effect (different memory access times leading to different wait-states, leading to different slowdown).jepjepjep wrote:I used to have a legit US board, and it used eproms instead of the SIMM memory.
These will play identically, in fact the SIMMs only store graphics data. The program code is always on eproms (even on the Japanese version) and there is no difference in gameplay (unless someone notices a bug in the phoenix code, but that seems unlikely since it's been around for a long time without any complaints).

I can see why, since they look like RAM SIMMs, but they are just Flash ROMs in a SIMM stick. The same used in all black CPS-II PCBs, but for code in that scenario.trap15 wrote:Ah really. These are in a subboard that connects to the bus in the same manner the Eproms would (I believe there are no mask roms for progear).

..noticing whether slowdown is present or not is easy, but noticing differences in slowdown? is that supposed to be immediately apparent?indeed. MAME's slowdown is waaaay wrong.

Got a Viper Phase 1 today:

Looking at the back of the motherboard, OUCH:

I guess that explains why it was so cheap. May need a new Seibu motherboard. Do I dare plug it in?
I'll test it out when I get home tonight.

Non-volatile memory is non-volatile memory. Those DIMMs are not RAM, they are FLASH memory. Conversions just stick all that data into giant EPROMs on the main board. Same data. Education get.trap15 wrote:Perfect conversion? Unlikely. The Progear boards used a different memory (typical PC "DIMM" memory) than normal CPS2 games (normal SRAM memory). Sorry for not knowing off the top of my head that one of the few CPS2 games that used DIMMs used them for ROM and not RAM like one would expect a DIMM to be used.undamned wrote:Non-volatile memory is non-volatile memory. My problem wasn't that you lack thorough knowledge about all arcade hardware, but that you straight called someone out based on false assumptions. Know what you are talking about before you make completely ignorant claims like:trap15 wrote:Sorry for not knowing off the top of my head that one of the few CPS2 games that used DIMMs used them for ROM and not RAM like one would expect a DIMM to be used.undamned wrote:Non-volatile memory is non-volatile memory. FYI, it's not just some obscure hardware setup. All CPS3 games use the same type of memory.trap15 wrote:it's basically not possible to have a "perfect" Progear conversion.

Not sure if that was a joke, but no, I do mean CPS3. Ah, I assumed that all CPS2 had FLASH DIMMs as well, as the game in question was CPS2. JOKEFAILundamned wrote:Not sure if that was a joke, but no, I do mean CPS3. Re: The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
The difficulty difference between the JP and US versions is similar to Giga Wing (where it's 2 on US and 4 on JP too) - pretty negligible. The patterns themselves and density don't appear to be altered, and at best there's a slightly lower initial rank on the US version of Progear (or slower overall rank increase). Really, it appears to be just as difficult by the time you hit stage 3 and particularly 4. Someone playing on a JP board then on a US board isn't going to notice it being terribly easier or vice versa, it's not like how the Hong Kong version of Donpachi has ridiculously jacked up difficulty.Skykid wrote:[Ah right, didn't realise a US one was on there. Also, the US and JP boards just use their default settings, you don't have to turn up the difficulty if you're playing the US version (it doesn't seem to affect much anyways).
Re: The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
I have to disagree there. Spadgy and I used to play the US version in Casino regularly, and then both bought JP versions and found it markedly tougher. Subsequently, after clearing the JP ver, going back to Casino's US board offered a much softer run.BareknuckleRoo wrote:The difficulty difference between the JP and US versions is similar to Giga Wing (where it's 2 on US and 4 on JP too) - pretty negligible. That's cool...of course, the Fabtek version of Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. (which requires a USA region SP1 mobo) is the American version of the JPN region VP1:NV SP1 cart indeed. My local arcade known as "The Electric Underground," had such a VP1:USA up & running on a generic Dynamo cab back in 1995 -- it was priced at a mere four nickels per credit. Plus, the high scores and high score initials would be saved for posterity upon powering down for night (via on-board backup battery).Jeneki wrote:Success!

Nice catch.
About the Osman, if you got it from a korean seller on eBay or if the board has odd stickers on window-chips, I hope price was good because there was some Osman converted boards lately on eBay, not 100% official eprom-wise, all emerging from korean sellers. Conversions should never be pricey.
Re: The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
Pretty sure that's a conversion - note evidence of eproms being soldered in, note labels which are hand cut on the windows. Even Korean bootlegs tend to have same size eprom stickers if they came from a factory.Dave_K. wrote:There was an export/korean/eprom version on eBay earlier this month for $400, and another one up right now for "one day only" currently at same price.

I'm not in the right forum for this, but just to say I'm thinking to trade one of my Bonk's Adventures boards for stuff of the same rarity level.
Right now, I would be interested by a Crystal Of The Kings (Brezzasoft) complete full kit (must include original box).

Let me explain : the most known looking for Bonk's Adventure is a single board integrating both the mother and roms, I took a pic of the one I got a couple of years ago, here it is : http://s2.postimage.org/db3r216h5/bckg.jpg
But I recently found another version with 2 boards, a removable rom board inserted in the same size mobo (exactly looking like Great 1000 Miles Rally 1&2 PCB's for instance), : http://s7.postimage.org/5bpxzomjv/pcg_B.jpg
