Filler episodes in anime (was gonna post this in the recommended anime topic but I'm the most recent poster there, and I'm trying to cut back on doubleposting). Was watching Tenchi Universe, and finally it seemed like it was about to go somewhere... and then, endless episodes of them in the Yagami having random adventures. Personally I would've liked some of these episodes if they had happened before the story arc had been introduced, but coming in the middle like they do they're kind of annoying. (And the episode where Ryoko goes to buy them food but left them starving while she had fun... not only seemed out-of-character but actually made her unlikable. I'm not sure what the writers were thinking there).

Also, it annoys me that I don't know Japanese.

Not at all. I like to think of myself as the world's most vocal critic of hemorrhoids, and their impact on political and philosophical discourse. If I had gone the way of the sleaze-bag, I doubt I would've pursued back-door pleasures, but you never know. The threat of hitting the wrong hole (and running with it) remains potent.

-The Wilhelm Scream. Wish I'd never heard of it. Watched the LOTR trilogy over the weekend with some friends and family. Fun movies (and hey, got a couple people interested in reading the books), but I swear the WS is in all three films and about a million others I've recently watched. Like someone flicking the back of my ear and explaining where it's from every time.

-overly obvious stock sound effects in general, actually. Silent Hill 4 opens with another commonly-heard comedy scream, a harbinger of Akira Yamaoka's phoning in the sound design on that game.

-EU regulations on supermarket eggs. Apparently they must not be washed during processing? Would certainly explain why I found a couple of shit-streaked ones in this weekend's groceries from the local ubermarket. WTF is this, I grew up in soviet USDA. No more omelettes for the next couple years then. >_<

-Firefox's fucktarded spellchecker redlining "omelettes" despite being set to British English.

When anime sites fuck up the upload order of their episodes. I'm on animeultima watching the original Gundam, and the fucking forgot to upload episode 15! So the video for 15 is actually 16 and so on. One of the mirror vids is fucked up from the very beginning, though.

Also, before I decided to watch Gundam, I was gonna watch The Melancholy of Haruhi (or something, I forget the exact name), and apparently they MADE the episodes out of chronological order. One guy says its better to watch as intended, the other says to watch in chronological order, and I'm like "fuck this, I'm gonna watch something else."

Gundam episode 15 isn't on there because Tomino didn't want it on there. It's another rather superfluous "desert island/beach" episode. It wasn't aired in English, and it's also not available on the R1 DVD releases. Definitely not the websites fault, this time.

Yeah I remember the 17/15 rule in New Hampshire (someone correct me if I'm wrong) - the age of consent among adults is 18, and the age of consent among minors is 16. So if you're 17 years old (a junior/senior) dating a 15 year old (freshman/sophomore) you're liable for statutory rape. Absolute horseshit. Luckily I always dated older women .

At this point the Wilhelm Scream is just an in-joke amongst film soundtrack editors. It's probably something that shouldn't be pointed out, like when a drawing has two left feet or something. Personally I always get a kick out of noticing when it's in there.

Some other staple soundtrack effects, like gunshot noises or that one monster rawr that you hear everywhere, DO piss me off.

But the Wilhelm Scream just goes well with everything.

It covers the whole book, it just makes some serious changes (in a nutshell: the opening bits are close to the book, but the second half is just the writers doing whatever they want). Part 2 would have to practically have nothing to do with the second book at all in order to fit the film continuity.

As for overused sound effects, has anyone but me noticed that the Doom door-opening sound is everywhere these days? It seems like I always hear it, and it always takes me out of the movie.

Here's a new one.

I bought a VHS movie at Goodwill... and when I got home, my VCR was having problems. The exact same sort of problems it had when I tried to watch Fist of the North Star. I had cleaned it at that time, and that cleared it up. So I cleaned it again... but unlike last time, this time it seems to have made its issues worse. It now doesn't recognize button inputs and the "Power" light never comes on, and the clock keeps blinking. And now there's a tape stuck in it.

Worse is, this is actually a combo VCR/DVD recorder unit, which I had been using to dub movies onto DVD (usually ones that haven't been officially released in that format), as well as record game footage. I might end up having to buy a new one, which sucks all on its own.

Sometimes I wish VHS tapes had never existed, and we had gone straight to DVD.
