Fun little game, with a really solid first 4 levels. The last 2 levels don't quite hold up unfortunately, and the final "boss" is a massive letdown. Also, it's prob a lot more fun with 2 players.
I used to think this was the hardest shmup on the SNES. I could never pass level 3 back in the day.
I was right there with you, I remember renting this game several times and playing it with my brother back when it came out. We reached the part where you get the boat a few times but could never beat the 3rd level.

Got to love how this game had the balls to enforce a 1CC right out the door, unlike almost every other console game at the time.

Those who were watching the stream will know that a couple days ago I cleared Muchi Muchi Pork 1.00 with Ikuo! I was playing the xbox port, so there are some inaccuracies compared to PCB, but I play similarly well on PCB (my current high score of ~95 million near the end of stage 5 was set on Frenetic's PCB).
On the same night I also cleared Mushihimesama Maniac mode as M-Power for lulz, since I've never tried playing Maniac as anything other than W-Power. It was a fun diversion, to be sure.

Check out a recording of the run here!

I haven't reached the last stage more than a couple times ever, and have only credit fed through the last boss once or twice. This was completely unexpected, and completely awesome! :D

Nice clear.

Cleared Trizeal Remix from the Shooting Love collection. Barely took any effort though, just a few credit feed runs, then a 1cc happened. Definitely could improve on it a bit if I spent some more time on it, but going to try to practice up for Exzeal now which is definitely going to be harder.

My run of Earth Defense Force on Hard for the SNES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Poh_C9hrsMM

This is a pretty good game, very simple, but surprisingly fun while it lasts. At least this game doesn't have a broken scoring system like 90% of the games on the SNSE.

Burning Dragon Plus is solid and has a lot of secrets - I've got the 2-all and I'm sure there's bonuses I haven't found yet. There's also a 1 Up in stage 4 I triggered once but never figured out how.

The original Burning Dragon is good as well, but uses checkpoints. Plus is superior.

I've got a handful of PC98 shooters I haven't really tried out yet. Net Guardian doesn't seem terrible and Garudius will probably be great if I can get used to its choppy scrolling.

Nice work Jonst! Less is more sometimes eh?
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

^ hey thanks man! Yeah, more often than not in my case. A fair few of my clears have happened this way. I'm sure my last 3 or 4 went that way. I worked out the less is more thing a good while ago but I just don't do it as often as I should. Thinking about going back to under defeat...

EDIT: maybe g-stream next!

1CCed Gunbird's second loop. Just the second loop, starting from a save state at max rank, with no Train Stage.

The first loop is entirely trivial though so that's a very promising result. Considering I have a 25% chance of getting the stage order I want in a real run, and factoring in the possibility of various screw ups, I'd estimate my chances of clearing the game are roughly 7-8% at the moment.

I think I'll keep practicing some more than I'll start recording some real runs. Working out a more reliable path for the 2-4 boss is the most important thing right now.

Fuuuuuuck!! Awesome job stevens, congratulations! You're the boss of under defeat, I salute you. Well done!! :D :D

Meanwhile my latest mission was ruined by my daughter shouting at me about unicorns (she's 3 and it was supposed to be her bed time) I had s no miss run on ketsui x late in to stage 4 up to that point... Played ak after that and had s no miss, potential score beating run late in to stage 5 when my wife came to ask me a load of pointless questions... Ending that run too... :|

Stevens.. was the ending any different?
what do you see... WHAT DO YOU SEE!?

Haha I suggest unicorns be the catch-all term from distractions ruining our shmup play.

Also I just had what was supposed to be casual Progear play, first time in over 6 months. After a couple of restarts on stage 1 I cleared the whole game, no miss until stage 5. It feels great to be able to come back and do well like that.

Thanks a lot man! I wouldn't say boss - I left a lot on the table, but I'm thrilled with the clear! See bottom!

 I have to admit I snorted beer when I read the unicorn part. I though it was pretty funny.

Nice work Blinge! A default Cave clear still eludes me. I'm so easily distracted.

As far as the ending I saw more Japanese that I couldn't read, but there was an extra picture right before the credits and the pics during the credits were (I think) are different than the 1st loop.

Also agree on unicorns. Can we get that added to the glossary?
---

Truth be told I made a conscious effort to control rank this run. I honestly have no idea if it did anything other than lower my score. -

I finished stage 1 80,000 points less than usual, and I only option killed stage 1's boss. I usually option kill all of them. I still have no clue what increases rank exactly

Now that I have the clear I'll resort back to playing normally to play for a better score. I know I can easily add another 400,000 with boss bonuses. I was also fortunate because with the no miss I earned 6 bombs worth of bonus at the end - I would presume most of my future clears will have fewer or no bombs left at all.

I love this stupid game so much and it's still sinking in. Eventually I would like to start on 1-1 and try and clear all 10 stages. In the meantime I'm going for some stress free runs of this and Mars Matrix until I get the itch to try for something else.

Got that Gunbird 2-ALL

Image

Phew. Learning this game was a lot of fun, and a lot of frustration, and more fun, and more frustration.

The missing piece, the one that let me go from "I can kinda sorta clear the second loop" to "I got this shit on lockdown" was doing save state practice, but jumping from one stage to the other randomly. I was having real problem switching from one stage to the next during real runs before doing that.

I had also been hardcore practicing the Train stage lately, since I found it really annoying to have an "impossible" stage that just killed your runs, no matter what. I was determined to find a stable path, but all in all, I had no real hope of executing it in a real run.

What do you know, I got the Train stage this run. I somehow managed to lose only one life there, which is optimal with the amount of bombs I had entering it.

That still left me in a very precarious position, but somehow I managed to stay cool and make no more mistakes all the way to the end.

I got very lucky to get the secret bomb in 2-5, which I assume is random and only spawns something like once every twenty run. Clearing would have been possible even without it, but it made things way easier. Entering 2-6 with 1 bomb or with 2 makes an enormous difference.
By 2-7 my heart was racing like crazy, but luckily that stage is really really easy. A death there would have been unforgivable.

I never though I would see the day when I 2ALLed something. Practice can really get you so much farther than one imagines.
