I haven't rewatched it, but in making animGIFs of it, I was reminded of the utter brilliance of Hand Of Death, I must rewatch it soon, watching kung fu films always makes me feel guilty for not training for ages though :s :'(

Nah, that was Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster. Megalon's the one with the sweet drop kick.

I haven't seen Godzilla vs. Megalon in a while, partly because rights issues mean there hasn't been a U.S. home video release since VHS, but I remember liking it a lot. The team up action was much better than Godzilla vs. Gigan had. Gigan and Megalon just complement each other so well: vicious but craven alien cyborg and tough but dumb ocean bug god. It's slightly disappointing that Megalon didn't return in Final Wars to renew the evil monster bromance.

However, I think '70s Godzilla reached its pinnacle with the next movie. Mechagodzilla was gangsta.

drauch wrote:Godzilla Vs Megalon - Wow. Probably sacrilege to some of the elite Kaiju fans, but man, out of the 20 Godzilla films I've seen, this may be my new favorite. 60s and 70s era Gojira really make me happy; they're so much fun. Light-hearted, lots of monster battles, and usually a pretty obscure human sub-plot. The dream team of Jet Jaguar and Godzilla makes me cherish friendship and loyalty more than ever--kinda like John Woo. I want to go give thumbs up to everyone I know and shake their hands after we kick someone's ass.
The Showa stuff is the best for sure. I haven't even seen the more recent stuff except for parts of Final Wars and it looks like Sci-Fi channel fare to me. I'll get to them though when I make my way there eventually. I tried to watch Frankenstein Conquers the World but I can't get my subtitles working right. :(
I watched King Kong Vs. Godzilla. Fun movie.
Next up for me is Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster.

Especially when Cage is involved.

The movie is decidedly below-average on nearly every front (You gotta love the orcs - whoops i mean 'possessed monks' - at the climax) but has its moments of entertainment, all of them purely unintentional.

Yeah doods! Media Blasters released it like a year or so ago with a nice widescreen transfer. Pretty bare bones release due to their fiasco with Destroy All Monsters, but the DVD is cheap as hell (12 bucks new, Amazon) and well worth it.

In response to the newer Godzilla stuff: Yeah, it's not the same, really. There's lots of fighting and references, but it just doesn't feel the same. Too much nasty looking CGI. Still, certainly better than nothing and worth seeing. I've yet to try Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, though.

Thanks, I'll definitely be picking Megalon up.

Final Wars was full of awesome crazyness. Actually, I like all the millennium films to some degree, while the heisei era had some shit that was beyond terrible.

I watched The Fantastic Adventures of Unico with my daughter. This was only the second time I had seen it since the 80's. I think my daughter is a bit young yet and was scared by some of it.Man all of the whining, crying and yelling in it is annoying.

Mighty Peking Man - Essentially Shaw Bros' remake of King Kong. Pretty wacky stuff, most notably a lengthy romance montage of frolicking through the jungle and swinging a jaguar in circles while laughing. Ends on a pretty depressing note. Peking Man himself is kinda nasty. Available on Netflix I gather, but in dubbed bologna and a different edit.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - KHANNNNNNNNNNNN.

Finally got my 25th Anniv edition of The Last Starfighter.
Had to import it from the US.
A very arcade machine shoot'em up affair. The film's not too bad and the effects were very good for the day. Last time I saw it was...28 years ago

Getting to the end of Jericho series 2. I now understand why they pulled the series. Series 2 was giving away too many trade secrets

It's worth seeing. The human side of the story is pretty dry, but the updated Mechagodzilla is great to see in action. It also has some of the best city destruction scenes since Invasion of Astromonster.

GMK was my favourite of the millennium Godzilla movies, due in no small part to it being directed by Shusuke Kaneko (of the heisei Gamera trilogy). He's one of only a few kaiju directors who nails the human and monster aspects of a story with equal quality. It was also great to see a truly malevolent Godzilla for once, and the scene where the force of his radioactive breath sends up a mushroom cloud gave me goosebumps.

I watched The Raid again, and for the first time in my life (despite being a long time non-fiction space travel fan) Appollo 13, which might seem pretty repetitive if I weren't delighted to see all the interpretations of the various characters from the history of American space flight. I liked it alot.

Just watched Sans Soleil, a sort of essay film meditating on memory (particularly cultural memory) and time. It's one of the best films I've seen, so I'll have to acquaint myself with Marker's other works post-haste. This DVD comes with La Jetée, so that's up next, methinks.

To think that Sans Soleil was shown on the BBC in the 80s! We scarcely get anything that isn't excruciatingly trivial and banal, now...

Just watched 'Inbred'. It's your now typical redneck horror torture effort, but the difference is that it's set in Yorkshire in the UK. Lots of stereotypes, several homages to films past, it sets out to be trashy, repulsive, cruel and funny. I enjoyed it, I guess it's a 6.5/10 or so - more of a hit than a miss. Some of the scenes are legitimately uncomfortable too.

La Jetee was (maybe still is?) my favorite film--certainly still the most romantic film for me. I haven't explored much of Marker's stuff outside of Sans Soleil, either, so let me know if you find anything good.

I still need to watch this. I might as well bite the bullet and get a Netflix account to watch it.

I'm one of the crazy few who strictly goes with the disc rentals and, to this day, resist watching streamed movies (unless it's pr0n) 8) I'm halfway through "Anita: Swedish Nymphet," a most excellent film.

My opinion of "worth" isn't quite up there with everyone else's since I'm a video hoarder... I mean, collector. You should rent it first. I saw her biggest feature "They Call Her One-Eye" and, while it's good for a Revenge flick, it did sort of go on for a bit too long. I chose not to buy that one (up to this point). This one was a lower-budget Sleaze production. I've only seen half of it, but what I have seen so far, I've liked. If I were to buy a video, it would be this one over "One-Eye" 8)

Yeah, I've got They Call Her One Eye, and yeah, I can agree; but when the revenge starts you really feel the long, drawn out scenes of suffering and payback. Trust me, your opinion of worth is right up there with mine  .

Finally checked out the 1080p version of "Beyond the Black Rainbow" sci-fi flick. Like the insider nods to the anime Akira film, Blade Runner and Buckroo Banzai films. The director sure knows his cult-classic films indeed. If you do a frame-by-frame analysis of the rapid-fire single frame segement of various pictures flashing by, you'll come across two single frames that delve further into the world of BTBR with the doctor's psych-evalution reports on a "certain" test subject). The keywords of "telepathic" and "adolescent" flash on by just for a single brief frame, indeed, to give the prospective viewer a hint of what's to come next.

Some of the background props are time-period correct for the year 1983 that the film takes place in, notably with the old-school CRT-based Sony Trinitron TV in one key scene.

The minimalistic design of the background scenery within the Arboria Institute envokes something like out of the classic 2001: A Space Odyssey flick.

Even the artificially superimposed dirty and scratched upped frames effects adds that old-school film appeal like one would find inside such an old 35mm film reel vault (before restoration to it's former glory as it was meant to be watched/viewed).

Worth picking up? I'm on the fence on this one... I've not seen it, but if I do, I'd probably like to watch it in 1080p, an not streamed. Might add it to my Xmas list.

Cockneys vs Zombies. 7/10

Great idea, lots of good actors and acting - lots of laughs too. It's not as good as the trailer implied though - you're kind of waiting for the good bits to happen for half the film. Worth watching just for Richard Briers with an uzi.
