There's a rather awesome replay with A-L on the v1.5 leaderboard, scoring close to 60 billion. The dude recharges level 10 hypers off of other level 10 hypers, like, ten times every stage.

In case anyone's bored as shit and wants a fill of lulz.

I wonder if its Pikkorro. I've been watching him practice on nico and its very entertaining.

Does it have a good stage 5 route? Anyone mind uploading it?

Stage 5 seems to be his weak point, judging from the fact that he basically just put down the controller once it rolled around.

Which means that the entirety of his score came from the other stages, so it's not any less impressive in my mind. Stage 3 midboss at rank 40+ is funny, but not as funny as stage 4 midboss at rank 50.

SSERESS has a new 76 billion replay, going half way into stage 5. 50 billion after stage 4. An autobomb at the first set of large bullet cancelers ruins the score and he stops playing.

There's a 71 billion D-L run by CDAmk3 from last week, which is basically the same. 52 billion after stage 4, but stage 5 at max rank seems to be tough. He gets a clear, but after several mistakes.

I'd love to see how he hands the stages prior. But he is a very good player. According to his twitch (http://www.twitch.tv/minamin_ch/), he has stage 5 all figured out. I'd love to see it in action.

Again, anyone mind uploading it? I unfortunately do not have LIVE at the moment. :(

EDIT: http://www.twitch.tv/minamin_ch/b/420536413 around 2:40:00 he has up to Stage 3 recorded. Sweet jesus.

warning: an unstructured rant is approaching

Been playing this a bunch now that I've had some free time. I remember why I sold the PCB on, and unfortunately lots of time in practice mode hasn't changed my opinion of the game much. I've made modest improvements on st4 and st5--in fact, almost cleared 1.5 mode on a random run earlier. Sometimes I enter this white hot bullet dodging nirvana and the game really seems to flow... but its mostly just "memo hell" to me. st5 is bombfest, especially the second half. I can theoretically imagine becoming good at this but strict positional memorization isnt a process I enjoy that much. I keep contrasting this in my mind with DOJ st5, which is super hairy but doesn't feel as reliant on being in the exact right place.

Oh, and the art design isnt "ugly" but everything looks so generic in the backgrounds that I have a hard time getting any memorization cues from there.

What I really hate though (hehe) are the popcorn swarms. It makes the game feel less like dodging bullets and more like quickly moving into position in order to trivialize the next section. Incidentally this seems to be the way superplayers approach a game, when they talk about avoiding attacks altogether. I respect that intellectual puzzle endeavor but this one is just a little too heavy on it for me.

Bosses also feel very "undodgey" to me. Some attacks seem trivially stupid, only to be followed by a "be right here or die" type pattern. And then quite a few others are based on blind tap-dodging. 1.5 gives you so many resources between hypers and bombs that I'm not sure this is even one of the hardest Cave clears, but I just don't have much fun spam-bombing my way through everything.

Mental contrasts worth making imo: this with doj st5, this with garegga st6 at high rank...

After being out of the shmup-loop for almost a couple of months, I finally gave DDP SDOJ a swirl... Was toying around with Novice and 360 mode. Still no novice clear with a-s or a-L... :(

But almost 1cced 360 mode on my first credit, playing shot-mode.

Just for the lulz, I popped in arcade HD expert mode - after that, I needed some ailment for my anus, it was suddenly goatse-sized...

After about 10 credits, sill no A-L clear in novice, but I think it should take me too long to get there. After that, I want to sink my teeth in novice expert mode and progress from there to arcade HD... This game really is hard, but very motivating. For a first time, I do actually like the chaining.

I wonder how I will fare when I switch to another CAVE shooter after some extended playtime with SDOJ... The bulletspeed really IS hellishly fast in SDOJ and maybe being exposed to it for some time will make other games with slower bullets seem easier. Well, here's to hoping. :)

Edit: DrTrouserplank: let's play! Let's play the novice-modes and get in a little competition - stop whining, get enough lube and just enjoy the game. It's balls hard, but it really isn't unfair. Just look at it like some kind of method to get into a zen-like state while playing it. Let all hell break loose around you, but empty your mind and don't let the game "get" you raging and whining. If you manage that - not getting enraged although being raped - you have already won. ;)

I've been through to stage 5 a couple of times in novice, probably got at least half way through it. Probably time to give it a go in practice mode before doing too many more runs.

I know it's been previously posted, but Saya is a slowdown fest.

A Novice expert clear with her is easy, as simply holding rapid induces a ton of slowdown. If you use her in 1.5 or Arcade with Shot/Laser there is not so much, but it's still there in Expert. I'd say Saya Expert is an easier clear than Shot/Laser.

Not that I've cleared it yet, but I'm regularly getting a good way into stage 5. Of course your score goes to shit - but it would be a 1sissy.

Still don't like the large hitbox and lack of slowdown, and yet they add a character that can grind the game to a halt and make the most difficult mode almost too easy. Weird.

I don't get this scoring and hyper charging. I've got no idea what I supposedly did different to get 1.5B by the start of stage 4, that I now can't even get until well into 5.

Maybe I just hypered all the time instead of fucking dying with a level 6 charge on stage 3.

Incidentally. Something evidently makes the hyper charge quicker because some people are getting to level 10 well before the stage 3 mid-boss. SO what affects the charging speed?

Make sure to destroy the side sponsons on the first boss, don't break your chain and you should have a level 10 hyper by the time the 3rd midboss rolls around, even on novice :)

By chaining and collecting bee items in stage 1 I have a 2x hyper sometimes 3x hyper when the boss appears. Destroy the pods on each side for more hyper charge. When boss 1 dies I have a 4x hyper.

Stage 2, same thing. Collect bee items and keep the chain going as much as possible. The higher the chain the more hyper charge you get from a bee item.

At the start of stage 3, right when you hit the water and the boats start coming, I usually have a 10x hyper ready. I unload it on the stage 3 middboss. I usually get the 2 extends here. 1st (800k) when the midboss dies and 2nd (1,5b) a short while after, before the dam structure.

I believe bees and stars increase hypers, as well as playing on a higher rank?

edit: Like 1up said - chaining a large HIT combo and collecting a bee supposedly builds your hyper meter faster.

It's possible to activate a level 6~8 hyper just before the stage 2 mid-boss, extend by the end of stage 2, and have a level 10 hyper ready during the stage 3 mid-boss. I know this for a fact since I've done it in 1.5 (I died before I could activate the level 10 hyper though  ).

It's possible in 1.5 because you get hypers so much more quickly.

You can't do that in arcade HD or novice as far as I am aware.

Why would anyone want to play Arcade HD when the more polished 1.5 is available? :P

Isn't Novice based on 1.5? If it is, I think it should be possible on Novice Expert at least.
