While I haven't seen any episodes, it is often said by fans that the first episode of Lucky Star is very misleading in quality. So I guess skip it if you want to see what the hype is about.Pirate1019 wrote:Is the entire Lucky Star Anime like this? If so then I find it oddly endearing. I never though watching people talk about how they eat food could be interesting.
Guess I should add in an recommendation to make this post not completely worthless. I am 5 discs into Last Exile and if anyone is a fan of epic shows and battleship fighting(a lot of "All crew to battle stations!") then he/she should watch this as quick as they can. The dub cast is like a mega crossover fanfic. There is quite a bit of CG though since it is from Gonzo.
Lucky Star, like Pani Poni Dash, is pretty much an animated webcomic, packed to the gills with references to retro videogames (like this) and net.culture. Oh, and if I'm not mistaken it's mentioned in one episode that Kagami (the long-haired one of the purple-haired twins) is a shmup fan.Pirate1019 wrote:Is the entire Lucky Star Anime like this? The girls in Lucky Star are all ridiculously cute, though. It's hard to decide which one I like best. I guess I'd have to pick Kagami since she and I have the least in common--I'm as geeky as Konata, as spacey as Tsukasa, and as full of random trivia as Miyuki, so picking any of them would be kinda like marrying myself.

Right now I'm obsessed with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. You can get scanlations here, and Viz is in the middle of releasing an English edition of Part 3. The fights are really creative, and the Stands (introduced in Part 3) open up the way for lots of bizarre characters and powers.

No written summary can do 5cm/sec justice.eight wrote:Hmm, sounds interesting!

I don't usually label an anime as a "must-watch", but in this case it's justified. There's no stuff exploding; no power limit breaks; no blood; no gore; no headfuck endings; no 10 episode fight sequences; no mecha; no orbital cannons; no moeblobs; no tsunderes; no transformation sequences.
Just a beautifully animated story of love, heartbreak and the regrets you carry as you drift apart. It's one that must be seen if you enjoy well-crafted stories, and this one is as good as it gets.

Sounds cool. I liked Voices of a Distant Star.Icarus wrote:No written summary can do 5cm/sec justice.eight wrote:Hmm, sounds interesting!

One exploding head is the minimum requirement for me to watch something.

This looks really, really awesome Icarus! Will have to check it out!
While we're on the topic of intelligent anime, I'll recommend Toki Wo Kakeru Shojo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time).

Best Anime I've seen so far this year!
sounds intresting and yet prenticious. But its probbley going to be great. Ive watched BECK mongolian chop squad about 4 times. got told to watch it by a friend in Japan and im in awe of it from pretty much the second epsiode. Its the only anime ive felt the need to buy the manga/pulp of. Its getting a US release too i read the other day not sure how it will work tho it being 80% japanese and about 20% english :-/wikipedia nerd wrote:The movie is named 5 Centimeters Per Second for the speed at which cherry blossom petals fall, petals being a metaphorical representation of humans, reminiscent of the slowness of life and how people often start together but slowly drift into their separate ways

Watch Kanon. The English dub is surprisingly good. And before you ask they DID keep the catchphrases in, I saw the first episode streamed on Anime News Network and Ayu still says "uguu." Not sure about the other catchphrases since I only saw the first episode.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Welcome to the N.H.K.
Black Lagoon
Gunslinger Girl
Lucky Star
xxxHolic
@Zebra Airforce: What was the most recent anime you've seen? I can almost certainly recommend at least Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, since it finished only this last September.

I guess it would be Paranoia Agent. At least that's the newest anime I've watched that really grabbed my attention.
I saw an episode of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and I thought it was really interesting, and I also saw a couple of episodes of Kodomo no Jikan and thought that was really interesting too. I don't want to bother watching it until all of the uncensored episodes come out, though. I refuse to put up with that chirping shit. Other than that, I really haven't watched much at all.
I also watched 5 cm/sec and Voices of a Distant Star the other day, they were both just fantastic

Legend of the Galactic Heroes will put any Anime series into shame.
110 episodes of the best storytelling ever. Long series, but you have to remember that the series wasn't meant for TV (it's the longest OVA series there is, but the story is so rich it's really worth it to see it for once).
The whole series is the whole text novel series put into 110 episodes (which took about ten years for the series to finish, because it was a OVA). Director Noboru Ishiguro (Macross, Megazone 23 and others) did a great job on this. I think it's one of his best works as a director.

So about early/mid 2004? Then Almost any of the series I mentioned in my last post will work great. I can heartily recommend any one of them. If you want any specifics, just look em' up on wikipedia. What you'll want to watch is up to you, but I will vouch for their quality.Zebra Airforce wrote:I guess it would be Paranoia Agent. On 5 cm/second and Voices: Loved em' both. They were a nice change of pace from all of the Bleach I was watching at the time. (also a good series, but the anime drags on a lot longer then the manga and I ended up stopping towards the end of the anime-only arc. So the first 63 episodes, then stop.)
"You are the Hero of Tomorrow!"
Damn rite! Finally someone mentions something notable. LOGH is the epic ever. Is it fully subbed already? I was watching it about ten years ago but only the first 40 or so episodes were (fan)subbed then and I've been anxious to see the rest.Fighter17 wrote:Legend of the Galactic Heroes will put any Anime series into shame.
