a few years since I first posted here... but since "seniority rules" applies to lots of stuff I wanted to mention that I am close to (almost exactly 1 month ) 34 atm.
I'm 19 now, I became interested into shooters when I was 14 though (Ikaruga drew my attention). Now its the only thing I live for! (exaggeration, but collecting & playing old games is really a huge passion to me).
I started playing shmups before I could remember, at the age of 2. My dad played the hell out of NES Flying/Sky Shark with me.
After getting a Genesis for my 5th birthday, my dad would rent me a game or two every week; some of those games were shmups. Same applied for when I got a Super NES 2 years later.
Then I started playing less shmups when I got a PS1 and an N64, going back into a shmup kick at the age of 14, when I picked up Gradius III for Super NES. Since then, shmups have once again become my forte, along with rhythm games, rail shooters, and Tetris TGM.
First shmup I remember playing was Xenon 2 back at when I was maybe 6 or 7 and to be honest I don't even remember what console it was on since I was playing it at a friend's house. Later I played lots of Tyrian and Raptor.
A while back I was trying to figure out Xenon 2's name and was looking for it in Wikipedia and Youtube and stumbled upon some newer shmup videos and I've been playing them quite a bit since then.
To have been of a certain age in 79-80 in the UK (I was 13-14 then) and seeing the likes of Space Invaders , and then Phoenix and Tempest for the 1st time ------ Mind blowing.
I remember when Exerion was new hot shit at the arcades and I couldn't wait for the last class to be over, so I could race over to the arcade and play another round... that's pretty old, man
I'm 33, and my first shmup was Parsec on my brothers (ancient at the time) Texas Instruments 99/4a computer. Only now am I realizing the profound effect that thing had on my life at such a young age. Still into shmups, and still appreciate beautiful industrial design when I see it.. Look at this thing - it's like a Goddam DeLorean for your desktop!
aaaaaaah parsec was probably my 1st or 2nd shmup as well on that very same computer (unless it was space invaders whichone came first on the texas).
parsec was really great, spent ton of time on it (and burger time).
replayed it through an emulator 2 years ago and oh my it´s incredibly hard.
Im between 30-35 first shooter I played was i think silkworm on my zx128k
