That jewel-milking right before the boss is nuts. I had no idea you could break 2m on stage 1
The one's that left my jaw on the floor were during the train in stage 2 (which I can pull off every now and then, would really like to be more consistent with that one) and in stage 5, during the downward scrolling section right after the mini-boss (which I did once... by accident. :(). I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned in this thread, but you should download Futobishi's ALL clear. Incredible display of Progear skill.

I'd like to be able to take down the final pattern of stage 3's boss the way he does in that video, I just can't quite get it.

Damn that's unreal. I didn't know that.

Is it like this on every stage in the second loop, or just the last two? What about the bosses, do you have to restart if you die on those?
If I remember correctly, it's like that for all of the stages. You restart on the boss battle instead of starting over the entire stage. I may be wrong on this information, it's been a long time since I've played it.

How interesting, thanks for sharing AB.

And I FINALLY hit the second loop myself, although I had no lives left when I entered it to even see the stage restart. :( Great run too, didn't have my first death until the very end of stage 4 (and what a stupid death too), and used only one bomb during stage 5... Then I finally died battling the stage 6 boss. Such an amazing game.

Yeah, I never did understand why this one wasn't super popular. I pretty much just figure its because "Oh no, it's not vertical" and people jump on the hate wagon without giving it a good chance. IMO :P

It's certainly different from other Cave games that I've played, but I really like it. Some very interesting and fun patterns, the whole jeweling system is just brilliant but tough to wrap your head around at first.

Thanks Battlesmurf. :)

Edit: I got to the second loop again tonight and wow, AB, you weren't kidding about the restarts. This time my brother was with me (who also plays shmups) and before I played we discussed throwing some credits in when I got there, mainly to practice the loop and so that he could try it as well! We also noticed some of the differences that I didn't pick up before besides the obvious stuff like extra enemies, bullets, etc., the item gravity is crazy: rings fall at a much faster rate (2x?) compared to the 1st loop.

What was really fascinating was that when you restarted the stage, the screen went white and the game kept a tally of retries, even when we both now played an extra credit each. I'm wondering if the game only allows "x" amount of retries before you have to start from scratch... If that's the case, it's going to make just practicing this loop a hell of a lot tougher. :(

If you miss on a boss in second loop you dont restart. Its already bad enough you have to mandatory restart on a stage.
Ive been able to get to 2-4 consistently lately. 3 bombs isnt enough for that stage. I really really would like some tips for this stage. Watching superplays doesnt really help. Im not that good lol

The one thing that really surprises me about this game is I still find something new every time I play it. I found a better path to score in stage 1, which seems to always yield the best pattern to jewel stream at the very end of the stage, but now I noticed that I've had to change my line for certain mid-size enemies as they shoot additional bullets. This game is nuts.

Edit: Fuuuuuck, why can't I always play this good? No deaths until the very end of stage 5, went into the 2nd loop with 5 lives remaining and still got massacred. Ah well. Amazing how little I scored on the second loop anyways, seems like the only thing you get points on is jeweling.

Had a heartbreaking death at the beginning of stage 5, but otherwise a nice run. 2-3 is brutal.

Well done! It's a great game, now that you hit a 1-ALL you should try for the second loop requirement! :)

Japanese Version (3rd button Auto enabled, obviously :P)
BKR - 9,888,680 - 5 - Bolt & Nail (2P Start+A+B Forward Formation)

I'm slowly getting better... I keep dying to stupid stuff with a full bomb stock like in Stage 3 stupidly or at the start of Stage 5, and then forgetting I need to not get rammed from behind at the bottom of the shaft when the popcorn appear from the left side of the screen...

Stage 4's a bit rough, but I'm surprisingly adept at taking down the boss.

I honestly think it's the most difficult section of the first loop. I find it best if I point blank all the Progear-looking enemies as they start appearing on the screen, then as the one enemy appears from the top left corner start gradually moving my ship down and towards the bottom right corner. Plus, ending in that bottom right corner puts you in a good position for handling the next section.

What do I do about the cable car section as you go downwards in Stage 5? I find when the large group appears all at once I get swamped. D=

For survival, I'd stay more towards the bottom left corner of the screen and point blank them with your autofire as soon as they start appearing. When they do come from the corner, quickly circle around them and point blank those. You can use your hold shot when you can, but try to do as much damage with your auto to quickly dispose of them before they spit out the circular shot. It'll take a little practice, but you'll have no problem with an aggressive point blanking strategy, it works well throughout this game. :)

JPN Ver.
BKR - 13,866,840 - 5 - Bolt & Nail (Wide Formation)

reached the final boss with 2 extra lives, full bombs, proceed to die 3 times in 20 seconds, woo

I can nab that 1-ALL if I don't fuck up. :|

For getting to the 2nd loop it looks like you have 2 free bombs even if you lose all your extra lives getting the 1CC. Is there a recommended spot to use those bombs?

If you're consistently getting to the final boss with 2 lives and not using any bombs, the 1 loop complete is well within reach for you as that's plenty of bombs to annihilate him. You could probably use one bomb on every new pattern he throws at you, just to give you an idea what kind of damage you can do with that kind of reserve.

With a little practice on that boss and using just 1-2 bombs you can definitely hit that second loop requirement. :D For example, I don't even use a bomb until I hit the second loop since I'm still playing that section primarily for survival.

Consistency unfortunately is my issue... I keep making runs in the hope that a good one'll turn out. Basically I only have like a 50% success rate of no-bombing the last pattern of the stage 3 boss so far, and I've only once no-missed 1bombed up to the stage 4 boss (I was super happy, of course I proceeded to mess it up badly).

Actually, no. Even if you set the U.S. board to difficulty 4 it's still not as hard as the JPN version in some cases. Sorry.

Got a new RGB Monitor (a NEC XM29 Xtra, what a beauty) so I'm back on Progear. And I finally, FINALLY, kept every bomb bonus going into the second loop. Wow that felt great! I couldn't find my line in 2-2 so that's where the run ended, but I wasn't too bothered.

So nice seeing nothing but large Emeralds and Diamonds on 2-1, lol!
