Raiden Fighters Compilation heading to the Xbox 360
You could buy all 3 PCBs for the price of a japanese xbox. Since you already have a cab, just play the real deal and not the port.Battlesmurf wrote:The thing that's irritating- I love 360's library- but it's looking like I'll need to be a JP console to play some of the neat crap...owning 2 piece of crap consoles is too much : (
With all the options I'm afraid the port is simply the better version.Dave_K. wrote:You could buy all 3 PCBs for the price of a japanese xbox. Don't troll a "what is better" debate here. I was referring to cost only as an objective measure, and specifically in battlesmurf's case where he already has several arcade cabs. Stating which is "better" is highly subjective.Necronom wrote:With all the options I'm afraid the port is simply the better version.
Troll, or worthy counterargument? Those RF cartridges aren't going to play any games but what's on them; a Japanese 360 can play anything else released in Japan (and much of what's released in the U.S., too).
On the other hand, an SPI would be really nice, I'd love to get one someday. No sense in not making use of an arcade cab, either.

I think saying he's trolling is a bit extreme. It's a valid point from both points of view.
Besides, owning a Japanese 360 is buying your way into the future games coming to the system as well. Those PCBs aren't so cheap.
It's pretty safe to say that if these ports stay 360 exclusive (which is just plain weird to me if you consider the market in Japan as far as 360 vs. PS3 goes), we as fans of the genre need to either wait for someone to find away around this region issue or just own up and drop the money on a Japanese 360. I'm personally hoping for the former to happen before I finally get around to doing the latter.

Nah, I wouldn't either. And I'm not the hugest fan of Shiki, so I'm not sold as of yet.Dave_K. wrote:Agreed, from a future of more ports perspective. But to start with just for RF series, I dunno.
Once those Cave ports come along though, it's going to be a little harder to resist if it's the only place I can play them other than an arcade in Japan.

In order to get to the shooters in the corner in my local, you have to walk through the 'idol master area', past a bunch of sweaty guys hunched over their glowing touch sensitive screens. I know not everyone (not the majority) who plays the game is like this, but those guys are fairly creepy.Twiddle wrote:He has expressed exactly that. It's only CERO 15 because it lets you touch their boobs, but that's clothed, never undressed. Nothing suspicious.Enhasa wrote:You could replace P3 with any number of games like Idolmaster in the chain, but you don't have an Idolmaster banner in your sig, after all.
Never played the game, but i'm sure it's loads of fun!
Anyway, I still have Raiden Fighters infront of me, all wrapped up and nothing to play it in. Wonder if this first pressing DVD version will be worth anything in a few years? Not that I'm into that, just curious.

Well, I'm not purchasing anything in the near future- but I've also got that stupid DOJ BL on my mind, too. Throw in the fact that I could have a 360 in my bedroom (whereas cabs have not made their way there....yet?) and it makes things a little easier. You could buy all 3 PCBs for the price of a japanese xbox. I think by the time I'm ready to throw that kind of money at a J 360- they should have all the issues ironed out I hope : )

Ok so this is basically the Onslaught OMAKE DVD with the 200M run, which came out after the initial release (I've got this already with the INH DVD). I don't believe it has the audio commentary, so that seems to be the only thing new.beam wrote:The first pressing will be bundled with a special edition of the inh dvd. There are audio commentaries from the players and a new run for jet with a 200,410,760 score.
INH page
Of course those with the previous edition have the soundtracks, which are not bundled with the new one. Moreover the running time is shorter, 180 vs 225 min.
30somethings who still remember the word "Raiden" before Mortal Kombat came along are one-third of UFO Interactive's customers, so probably.Rob wrote:I bet it'll come out here since it's got Raiden in the title.

Haha, that was a good one. Especially the hilarious part about the comparison being "highly subjective". Face the facts, they took a bunch of 10 year old shmups, enhanced them with a shitload of options, put them on one disc and ported them properly to a console which does also play lots of other good stuff.Dave_K. wrote:Don't troll a "what is better" debate here. This is how I feel.szycag wrote:Looks like just the game disc and the superplay dvd.
I seriously feel like stomping in place and screaming IT'S NOT FAIR looking at those pics
Even if it does come out here, that superplay DVD will be missing. I'm such a sucker for those things being packed in with my shooters.

If Working Designs was still around, there'd still be shmup console ports for today's modern-day gaming consoles...the real question would be this: Would WD be willing to include such Superplay DVDs for U.S. shmup fans?subcons wrote:This is how I feel.szycag wrote:Looks like just the game disc and the superplay dvd.

Playing Raiden Fighters (or it's sequels) SPI cartridge on a SPI mobo setup is "as hard-core as it comes" for those who do have the luxury of doing so... ^_~
It seems for the last few years, one of the California Extreme show organizers has shown off Raiden Fighters 2: Operation Hell Dive in a generic woodie cabinet (complete with USA Fabtek produced marquee) set on "Free Play" mode. It was fun to give it a spin for old times sake...but it was a "no-show" for the 2007 CAX show. I wonder why?
I see the value of such an console port of Raiden Fighters Aces -- means not having to lug such a big 'n' bulky arcade cabinet around whereas an XBox 360 is smaller and more portable. Sure, there's Mame/Mame32 emulation to play such Raiden Fighters roms on...

Incidentally, in case anybody was seriously considering buying a Japanese 360, I just got myself the 'Arcade' version from Play-Asia, and it seems to be the latest iteration of the hardware, with slightly different motherboard and stuff. Meant to be quite a bit more reliable, but still not exactly a completely safe bet.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll probably snag one with my tax return.

I've been through several US systems already- one I babied the crap out of- it didn't last any longer than one that I earned around 18k gamerscore points on.Yeah, the price at Play-Asia just went up on the 360 Arcade version, no doubt thanks to the high yen. I managed to get one before the price went up. It's really nice, with HDMI output. Shiki 3 barely strains it. If you limit yourself to 30-minute gaming sessions, it'll last for years and years.
That being said- I wish you the best of luck!
Also- do we have a definitive "if a JP console breaks in the US- it gets replaced with a JP console"?
