Recommended Anime/Manga?
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I just finished watching Toward the Terra, the 2007 TV adaptation of Keiko Takemiya's 1977 manga. It's a solid, old school space opera with epic scope. The story is free of most annoying modern gimmicks thanks to its vintage. In many ways this feels like a Gundam story, but one set free from the need to sell kids a new plastic robot each week. I wouldn't be surprised if the Terra E... manga was an influence on the original Gundam, given its themes of space-faring espers, brainwashed human governments, and characters who force themselves to act against their gentle natures for the good of a cause. Comparisons to Battlestar Galactica are warranted too (though it takes a while for the extent of that to become clear), though again the manga of this predates both versions of BSG. It's also startlingly ruthless in killing off characters.
If you like Zeta Gundam or Code Geass, you'll probably like Toward the Terra. Buy it while you can, as all of Bandai Entertainment USA's DVDs will be going out of print when they shut down operations next month.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Drauch,
I've just finished Dirty Pair TV (and about to finish the 2 'extra' episodes (25 and 26).
What would be the best thing to watch next? Project Eden movie, the 2 individual OVAs, or is it best to go straight to the 'Original Dirty Pair' 10 episode OVA?

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
started watching Dirty Pair: Affair Of Nolandia - classic cameo in the disco scene!
halfway through it now - v good so far, also I'm pretty sure already it has had more 'first person view driving/flying scenes' than I've ever seen in any anime before, and I'm pretty sure those scenes must be a bitch to animate...
finished it, great stuff, though I kinda thought it felt a bit 'serious' compared to the TV series. Also I missed the original pink Lovely Angels ship

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
How is this "The Mystical Laws" anime film? Recently, read a short review in the The San Francisco Choronicle about it and it intrigues me (but can't find a theater showing it).
PC Engine Fan X! ^_~

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
The OVA picks up after the series, if I remember correctly. Honestly, though, it doesn't really matter too much. My first introduction was through the film, then OVA and onward. That's the beauty of Dirty Pair: it's always a good time to watch any of itRaytrace wrote:Drauch,

just watched Dirty Pair: The Movie (Project Eden). great art, great music, great fight scenes, great opening, great ending, just great bloody everything :p
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
yeah they all seem kinda self contained and always enjoyable - is there any other good stuff made by the Crusher Joe/Dirty Pair team (obviously preferably scifidrauch wrote:The OVA picks up after the series, if I remember correctly. Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Nothing off the top of my head, but looking around at some of the people that worked on it, I can definitely recommend some stuff:
(Forgive me if some of this stuff has already been recommended)
-Director of Project Eden worked on Irresponsible Captain Tylor, which is one of the only animes that consistently makes my bitter self laugh out loud. Xbl0x is a huge fan and has sang it's praise many times.
-Character designer for the movies, OVAs, series, etc worked on the film Leda: The Fantastic Adventures of Yohko and the Project A-ko film. Both are slightly similar to Dirty Pair, in the sense that they are non-stop action, adventure, pretty anime ladies, etc. Both are favorites of mine. Discotek re-released Project A-ko on DVD a couple of years back in a glorious transfer; Leda still doesn't have a U.S. release and the JP DVD seems OOP. A handful of A-ko OVAs exist as well. Some are good; some are only decent.
The entire crew has worked on a lot of stuff, really. I'd say those few come closest to capturing the fun and action of Dirty Pair.

just watched Crusher Joe OVA: Ultimate Weapon Ash - non stop space opera action - loved it
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I have based my entire academic and professional careers on Captain Tylor (as well as Golden Boy and Futurama). No, really, I look to those cartoons for inspiration.

Yohko Leda is one of the best sleeper OAVs I have ever seen. I love it

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
finished Dirty Pair: Flight 005 Conspiracy in and of itself I really liked it, and it had tonnes of that 'first person' stuff which I like, the art was great overall, but the mood was kinda serious - especially the ending which was pretty Tomino-ish rather than the usual - 'oh shit sorry we destroyed your planet!!! *giggles*' :p

I'm a pretty massive Misfits/Samhain/Danzig fan, but I'm ashamed to say I never knew of this, though I knew Danzig was a massive Devilman and Harlock fan, seems a shame it never came out

I actually discovered that trailer because I googled 'Danzig anime' because basically I was looking for any interviews in which he spoke of anime, didn't find any though. I remember being impressed by him wearing the 'I Am The Deathbringer' Nemesis The Warlock t-shirt which I had when I was young too...
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
watching episode 25 of Harlock - the Doctor in full Samurai armour is pretty ace...

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Glenn Danzig is an overall comic book fan, so he should know a thing or two about manga and anime, but I don't think it would take a majority of his collection or interests.Raytrace wrote:cool stuffxbl0x180 wrote:

Kouji Kabuto's hair was very popular. I remember a neighborhood kid in Latin America went by the nickname "Kabuto" because of his crazy hair. Seriously, I don't remember his real name because everyone called him that

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
episode 30 of Harlock - really getting brilliant now IMO - I loved the 'cowboy' scene (and I don't even usually like Westerns that much)...
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
episode 33 of Harlock is incredible (the one with the cook lady's backstory) - my god - so much :'(
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
^Yeah man, I remember that one being especially emotional. God, the whole series, really.

Started Space Adventure Cobra and Rose of Versailles recently. Dezaki's stuff is so good.
Wish the Ashita no Joe series was fully subbed in English

I finished watching Black Jack OVA series. Gorgeous! all those Osamu Dezaki™ moments are awesome. The industry needs more people like him.

Well, plenty of people (badly) ape his style. Although I'd agree that the industry needs more people that are as creative as he was.KAI wrote:I finished watching Black Jack OVA series. Gorgeous! all those Osamu Dezaki™ moments are awesome. The industry needs more people like him.

It's amazing how well his style resonates with people, even when questionably mimicked. Just look at how people defend how horribly ugly and downright unfinished SHAFT shows are because they're convinced that Shinbo is some sort of high-minded experimental director, even though everything he's done is straight out of the Dezaki playbook.
Although, Shinbo himself is not a bad director. It's just that he hardly actually directs anything anymore. He's basically a director in name only, directing one or two episodes at best if that, I don't think he's directed a single episode in a long time. The real problem with SHAFT is the amount of grunts who badly mimick what Shinbo does and it just ends up an awful slapdash mess, which is why they're a bad studio with very very few good series.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I shall indeed, no doubt.cstle wrote: Check out the series, it's really good.
This speech in Harlock amazed me last night:
‘I’ve no kind of beliefs,
Much less any kind of faith.
I’m just searching for a place to die,
And the Mazone just happened to appear in my way.
That’s all there is to it.
It’s my hope that the battle with the Mazone
will provide me with a fitting place to die.’
I find this kinda depressing:
- not that I'm ungrateful for someone reblogging one of my GIF sets - but to accompany a Harlock post with this:
'lame lookin’ anime but an awesome speech.'
is, well, depressing to be honest, I don't understand why people don't look at anime as 'art of the time' and respect it in that way (if you know what I mean). I've never heard anyone go, 'ffs them Greek icons are lame, no sense of perspective...'

I for one love the Harlock/Yamato style and the dream sequences in Harlock especially are some of my favourite combinations of music with imagery ever...
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Akiyuki Shinbo is being too eccentric sometimes but he has potential. I think he's done a decent job adapting the Monogatari and Zetsubou Sensei series.
