Not a movie but Boardwalk Empire season 3
I was expecting a dissapointment after some serious drama in season 1-2 & how S2 ended. Boy, the 1st episode of season 3 reeled me & millions others back in. This show just refuse to dissapoint.

Rambu The Intruder - Indonesian Rambo! Ridiculous. Beats guys up with a bouncy ball, commands a convoy of bike-cars, gets pissed and gets revenge. Worthy of a good DVD release someday!
Space Amoeba - Weird Toho Kaiju flick. One of Ishiro Honda's last films. Giant squid, giant turtle (not Gamera) and giant crab (not Ebirah--that's a lobster) run amok on an island after getting alien particles in them. Not a lot of monster battles, but entertaining, still.
Super Inframan - Shaw Bros. best movie! Maybe not really, but it's always been one of my favorite. Non-stop action. Shaw Bros. foray into tokusatsu-like science-fiction. Danny Lee stars as the Inframan.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I think this is still my favourite Fellini film. Despite its length, I've seen it around 10 times; I've seen it more if you count the latter half, which I've seen way more (the first half is still kinda slow). The reason for this is that it used to come as two videocassettes, so I'd just pop in the second video, where, if I recall correctly, it starts at an outdoor cafe with Paparazzo just before they meet Nico and they go up to the rich people's party at the castle.drauch wrote:Geee, what a day:
La Dolce Vita
This is one of the movies that convinced me I love Italian cinema above all, and that I should collect everything from Neo-Realism up to the trashy Eurosleaze, Giallos, and Horror - and none of it failed to disappoint. It's funny, but other people didn't like it or absolutely hated it thinking it was way too pretentious and overwrought. Whereas, to me, this looked genuine while latter movies copied the hell out of it because they wanted to capture the same kind of decadent and vapid sophistication from this movie

Re: Movies you've just watched
Yeah, Italian films have always held a special place in my heart. I stopped collection them a few years ago but have recently picked back up the habit--or hobby--again. Really need to pick up some Martino films that got released while I was "away", specifically Island of the Fishmen and Torso, with Torso probably being one of my favorite film posters.
That last party scene in La Dolce Vita...so uncomfortable, hilarious, dramatic--really loved it. Been holding off on this forever, mainly just for the length (I can't stand having to pause a movie for a lengthy time), but it was well worth the wait. Receipt was still in the box; bought it back in 02/03/07. Took me a awhile...

Wow, that's crazy. I've been watching La Dolce Vita since around the time I graduated from high school up to today. I love the Nino Rota music score for this and I regret not buying it at the Tower Records liquidation sale back in 2006. Now that thing is worth way more than I usually pay for in music. That last party scene where Marcello sits and rides on the "country" girl was awersome - I WANT to party with these people (the drum/percussion music in this scene was catchy as hell and easily the best piece in the whole movie).drauch wrote:Yeah, Italian films have always held a special place in my heart. My copy isn't the box set, but the simple and cheaper 2-DVD set. Up to recently, I used to still have videocassettes of La Dolce Vita and Torso (released by Anchor Bay). I gave them away to Goodwill since I already have them on DVD. Well, I have ONE version of Torso; I still need to buy the English-dubbed and uncut version of it from Blue Underground.
My movie-watching idiosyncrasies are too much for some. I don't mind stopping a movie and finishing it some other day or watching only parts of it. I also put on subtitles on everything, including movies in Spanish and English (which I already understand). I pause, slo-mo, rewind, fast forward, freeze-frame, play with the colour settings, sharpness, tone, etc. a lot... much to the hatred of other people in the room. This is why I can't deal with watching movies in the cinema

I can understand the subtitles on anything. I've actually got a buddy that does that. I've had to do it a few times myself, as sometimes it can be a bit hard to hear or catch all the dialogue in some films. Pausing a film just kinda gets me "out of the zone," or something like that. I still do it sometimes, regardless.
Just watched Hang 'Em High with Clint Eastwood. I don't know how I felt about it. I feel like Eastwood's choice of Leone directing would have made it a better movie. It's kind of a mess of a film, really. It's equal parts revenge movie, justice and moral issues, as well as a completely unnecessary "love" story. The film itself has a fantastic cast, but most of them are sadly wasted with short screen time. Clint and Pat Hingle are great in their roles, and I guess a majority of the film is based on a true story, yet it kind of falls apart, especially towards the anti-climactic ending. Worth a watch, certainly, but Eastwood made much better American westerns.

Japanese are really weird about this. YOu will never, ever see more than 2 lines of text at a time in a Japanese subtitle. Strangers on a Train - Good, dark humored Hitchcock flick with Robert Walker playing a deranged oddball. Escalates into a hilarious, out of control merry-go-round finale!
They Were Eleven - Interesting 80s science fiction mystery aboard a large derelict vessel arranged as a test for ten students. An eleventh member enters the ship along with the other students, creating tension and paranoia among the group. A pleasing score, creative alien races and solid animation. By the same director of Mad Bull 34

I also watch the special features and maybe give the movie a second view once I see the intent of the director and people who worked behind the scenes. Cabin in the woods - Blu ray - Faulty disc version tested (Lionsgate will recall/ Region B)
Evil dead crosses the matrix ish. The film goes places you wouldn't expect and the first 20 mins goes where you don't want it to. its a good 8/10. You have to give it at least a 9 for creativity. The movie should have the first 20 mins cut out and add 20 more mins on the end for a perfect 10/10.
The Raid - Blu ray - Momentum / Region B
Asian Die Hard movie reminiscent of the recent Dredd movie. Cops/swat team go into a drug lord building. But once inside they are hopelessly outnumbered/outgunned. Movie scores points for being relentlessly violent and has lots of martial arts bits you'll want to see again. The movie rarely lets up the tempo. Its fast, its violent and its loud. If you want to see 90+ mins of ass kicking and explosions, go see it.

Ughhh...
Start off with the shit:
Class of Nuke 'Em High- I decided to give early Troma another run at 4:30 in the morning when I couldn't sleep. I hate Troma. I still do. Only got through half of it before I turned it off.
Interzone- 80s post-apocalyptic film. I collect/love post-nuke movies, but this one is a real stinker. Main fault is that it tries to be funny--which it isn't.
The Villain - Early Ahnold western spoof with Kirk Douglas. Absolutely horrendous. Couldn't even make it thirty minutes in. I expected awful, yet got worse.
Rage of Honor- Sho Kosugi ninja action! So good. So many shuriken deaths, explosions, front flips. Cannon films in their heyday.
The Virgin Spring- Ingmar Bergman's classic revenge tale. Quite a suspenseful and chilling finale, although some of the religious subtext is a bit perplexing. Even Bergman kinda feels that way.
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls - Russ Meyer is my favorite director. This is his big budget masterpiece. Not as many tittays as his other flicks, but still a hilarious satire with all his trademarks. Groovy score, as well, featuring Strawberry Alarm Clock at a party in person, even.
Ocean Waves- Less-known Ghibli, maybe for good reason. A well-animated, decent flick about subtle teen romance and a love-triangle. For it's short length, it does a good job at what it is trying to accomplish, and while I can admit that, it didn't appeal to me as much as some of the studio's other films. Maybe the main girl is too much like a lot of girls I know. Maybe it was TOO PERSONAL TO GRASP. Still, a decent film, despite my qualms.
Revenge of the Ninja - More Cannon Sho Kosugi action! Lots of shurikens, smoke bombs, SPITTING WEAPONS, fake body traps, etc. More perfection from Cannon. Shame Enter the Ninja with Franco Nero never got an "official" DVD release.

Against all odds, much better than expected. Destroys the Stallone movie to within an inch of its life. Alex Garland screenplay, but seemingly robbed the general concept from The Raid. There are worse films to plagiarise, however.
Unrepentantly violent (as it should be) and Dredd and Anderson were good. Some of the other characters/acting was redundant, but as no brainers go, this worked because it really was Judge Dredd/2000AD/Mega City One properly represented.
WARNING: If you don't know Dredd through 2000AD comics, you will probably hate this movie. There's very little there to connect with otherwise.

Yep, sure did. I'm a big fan of the original Last House as well, and most early Wes Craven. I think the only Troma movie I like (not counting stuff they've only put out on DVD) is the original Toxic Avenger. By the way, I've mentioned this at least once already in this thread, but the greatest Peter O'Brian movie has to be The Stabilizer. In addition to the hilarious action scenes, and Rainmaker (who really should have starred in his own spin-off series), it's also an interesting study of steroid abuse. Just compare the hero's upper torso with that skinny frame of The Intruder days. More so, check out his gurning facial expressions and glazed eye-rolling. He looks as though he's on a permanent horse binge. Not bad for an ass-kicker.

Recently watched the Raid and it was pretty awesome. Just noticed that another movie Rama and Mad Dog are in, Merantau, is on Netflix instant. I'll have to give it a go sometime. I also watched Bartleby, which is based on the short story by Melville. Never read the story but thought the movie was OK. It has a surreal sitcom-like staging to it and it gave me a few chuckles so I can't be too hard on it.

A Serious Man (coen bros)
I have seen quite a few of their movies recently that I loved: True Grit, No Country, Burn After Reading, so I had pretty high hopes for this. I was pleased, although I don't think every coen bros fan will appreciate it as much as their other great films.
My short review - If you have even an ounce of Jewish blood in your body, then nearly every scene in this movie will make you chuckle, lol, or facepalm... otherwise you'll just hate jews even more.
