Recommended Anime/Manga?
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I have no real opinion one way or the other on most of those, but GTO is certainly not something to avoid. One of the absolute greatest.

Hah, that may have come across as too harsh but, besides Vagabond, I hate nearly everything in that list.
My list would look like
Martial Arts = All Rounder Meguru
Fantasy = Berserk
Action = Freesia, Black Lagoon
Historical = Vinland Saga, Historie, Wolfsmund
Samurai = Blade of the Immortal, Vagabond, Takemitsu Zamurai, Shigurui
Sci-Fi = Blame!, Planetes
Tragic = Solanin, Bradherley's Coach
Comedy = Yotsubato, Franken Fran
Drama = Good Night Pun Pun
Mistery = Soil, Nijigahara Holograph
Horror = I am a Hero, Hideout, 6000, Shingeki no Kyojin, anything by Junji Ito

My all time favorite Berserk! Nothing compares.
I also like Bleach. Gets better and better.

More lazy copying of my own writing from the movie thread:
Ocean Waves- Less-known Ghibli, maybe for good reason. A well-animated, decent flick about subtle teen romance and a love-triangle. For it's short length, it does a good job at what it is trying to accomplish, and while I can admit that, it didn't appeal to me as much as some of the studio's other films. Maybe the main girl is too much like a lot of girls I know. Maybe it was TOO PERSONAL TO GRASP. Still, a decent film, despite my qualms.
Also slowly watching Magic Knight Rayearth. Only a few episodes in and enjoying it, but not loving it. A bit too silly with all the SD for my taste, but goddamn, those 15th year anniversary box set transfers are absolutely stunning. Looks like they may be going out of print already as well, as the 2nd one has already spiked and is harder to find. Big surprise.

I'm reading (and loving) 20th century boys. Now I understand why they say that Urasawa is a national treasure in Japan.

Watch Rayearth's OVA if you want something less stupid. The 2nd season of the TV series is good, but I can't stand the first one.

Earlier arcs of Bleach were pretty interesting, but it has gotten really dull. Only thing that was any interesting in recent memory was when Ichigo was developing his Fullbring powers [can you say BEAM SWASTIKA], and even then it was pretty dull. All the fights go the same way: Ichigo and gang are losing, exposition, oh now he's winning, oh wait lemme power up and more exposition about how my powers work, Ichigo/pals losing, oh hey Ichigo and/or friends power up, winning, repeat the powerup cycle maybe, end.lena09 wrote:My all time favorite Berserk! I know that's the standard shounen fighting formula, but you need something interesting in the middle of all that.
Best selection. Yotsubato is cute and funny, Franken Fran is disturbing and funny. Both are excellent, and some of my favorite manga[s? is it plural like that?] ever.Hagane wrote:Comedy = Yotsubato, Franken Fran

That's what makes Umi Ga Kikoeru so good. The main girl is not completely likeable and has what some may perceive as character "flaws" and "faults"KAI wrote:You are not alone, I had the same feeling when I first saw it.drauch wrote:Maybe the main girl is too much like a lot of girls I know.

Which are regularly twisted into otaku fetishes. See: "tsundere."That's what makes Umi Ga Kikoeru so good. The main girl is not completely likeable and has what some may perceive as character "flaws" and "faults"
(Not the same thing, just making a point.)
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
That would be taking things into cartoon extremes. To me, the otaku fetishisation of certain character traits is what makes animu so bloody awful to watch nowadays

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
just finished Martian Successor Nadesico and then watched Gekiganger 3 - very very good, the endinf of Nadesico was a bit annoying, but I'm pretty sure that was on purpose :p. Properly enjoyed Gekiganger 3 and tbh I enjoyed more than the so far 9 episodes of HK subbed Mazinger Z I've watched...

Can't believe I've managed to find an OVA which features integrales, 037 Stradales and 205 T16s !!!
Goddamn

watching it now - man this is ace - though well I suppose I am biased due to its subject, but I do think even if you weren't 'into' cars or rally cars, you would still enjoy it...

finished the Goddamn OVAs - really enjoyed the racing though I pretty much didn't understand any of the business machinations they were implying, plus the pseudo-philosophical lines at the end were a bit well vague to say the least...
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Yesterday got the chance to watch all 6 episodes of Golden Boy (George recommendation)... weird and funny, but the guys voice is so annoying
Also finished up watching the entire series of Ikkitousen and the OVAs (are these suppose to be related to the main series?!)... i do enjoy watching females fighting, anyone could recommend anything like Ikkitousen series

Variable Geo is ecchi. There's exploding clothes and shit, but no sex. I mean, come on, there was a SNES game.
It's a very mediocre OVA series, to be honest. I was just trying to mention something else in the titfighting genre.

Huh, didn't know about that. The original is most definitely not porn (hardcore, anyway).
They should have called it Variable Neo Geo

Still pissed at AnimEigo for failing to license the second half of this series.watch Yawara! instead.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Yeah, the Variable Geo series is originally just a fighting game with some implied rape and some boobies in between matches. Visual novels were made later on, but with no actual hentai, as far as I know. Variable Geo Neo is the hentai OVA; the original OVA is not. The games are pretty awesome.

I went and watched the OVAs as well - exactly the same sentiments. The business thing went totally over my head and I have no idea what the company was supposed to accomplish by getting into WRC. Then there was the girl that had the same last name as the other big company the first company started doing business with, and that connection was totally ignored. I guess when the manga was adapted into anime a lot of stuff was cut out. As a sidenote, the original manga was created by Kaoru Shintani, more famous for the awesome Area 88.Raytrace wrote:finished the Goddamn OVAs - really enjoyed the racing though I pretty much didn't understand any of the business machinations they were implying, plus the pseudo-philosophical lines at the end were a bit well vague to say the least...
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Yeah I did still enjoy it though no doubt, then again anything with both Group B and A rally cars in it is gonna have to try pretty hard to not have me like itGhegs wrote:I went and watched the OVAs as well - exactly the same sentiments. I must check out the manga definitely.
Yeah the business thing was ridic, and the utter paranoia about the EU/EC being formed was pretty hilarious. I loved the way it just kept on throwing in the word(s) 'Goddamn! randomly so it could justify it's title.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
AnimEigo is pretty much not even an anime company now that Yawara! and their big flagship title Urusei Yatsura are completely out of print. They only seem to get live action stuff these days.Op Intensify wrote:Still pissed at AnimEigo for failing to license the second half of this series.watch Yawara! instead.
I need to get back to watching some stuff, I really want to get A Certain Magical Index in December (thank god they pushed it back) and hope season 2 and the upcoming movie are picked up here as well. Railgun is a maybe, I'm not much of a fan of it because from what I was told it changes way too much from the manga (which I have 2 volumes of and enjoy so far)
On the manga side I also need to catch up on The World God Only Knows and Medaka Box.
