What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Anything from run & guns to modern RPGs, what else do you play?

I'm playing that a little on the 360, just a credit or 2 a day. I can clear Beginner and get to about stage 5/6 of Junior so far. Continental Circus is babby mode compared to Super Hang-On

I'll have to take another crack at Continental Circus at some point, I always used to run out of time on the last race

Caning Super Hang-On. What a game. Maybe better than OutRun, something I never thought I'd hear myself say.

We all (well, most) love Metal Slug, but have you looked at it properly lately, I mean really looked? Fuck me, the detail in these visuals is just incredible, it beggars belief that people sat down and coded some of these animation just for the sheer hell of it. Mighty fine game as well, at least 1 & 2 anyways. Shame what went down afterwards.

And Impossible mission for Vita can fuck off. It's supposed to include the original C64 version, but it's actually the same engine as the updated title, with reskinned visuals. There's even fanimation on there that the C64 didn't have! It's false advertising and it really makes me mad, I didn't expect to be interested in the new game, I bought it purely for the promise of the C64 game.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter shapes up to be the second jRPG finished twice by me, Chrono Trigger being the first.
I must say the former keeps bringing one of my favourite stories told by a videogame to the table. Something rather Eastern Bloc about the depicted world too. The air of dilapidation is preponderant. Like in a Strugatskys book or something along those lines.
Also, Dead Space Extraction. Still pretty easy on Hard (tougher difficulties remain locked), but since I keep sucking at games a bit after the recent hiatus, it's fine with me. The goofy storyline cheers me up.

Wipeout 3 [PS1].

Gaaaah, there is nothing worse than not seeing any racers ahead of you for 2 laps and you are in 4th place. Well, unless you were in second.
Also, racing with Icaras makes me want to cry, the damn ship feels worse than Qirex with turning, and fucking bounces everywhere [and has almost no shield].

Still probably one of the best looking PS1 games though, and the tracks are mostly pretty fun. I really wish Special Edition was released in the US, it is so much better [8 more tracks from previous games, readjusted ship handling, and a ton of little things, also has a "next race" button at the end of a race in single race mode, which is brilliant]. Turns a good-but-flawed game into one of the best racers on the PS1.

all about the airbrakes dude. I don't think qirex is that hard to handle.. you could always play special edition on an emulator and render it at a higher resolution than intended and stuff being loaded from further away which is pretty nice.

I just dunno how to set up analog control properly since I'm using wine to use epsxe on a mac, but even with digital control it's great fun.

Yeah, air braking is definitely needed with those ships, and Qirex is relatively manageable for me. But if I fuck up with Icaras, I'd repeatedly bounce off the walls, losing asstons of health in the process. Qirex, I'd bounce probably once, and be back on my way, and not lose nearly as much health.

Although, my favorite ship is Auricom. :D
Completely average in all stats, but that's the best part.

Also, I do emulate SE, but I can't really plug it into my TV and sit down to play then [no VGA ports on my TVs ;-;]. I at least have a setup to use PS1/2 controllers on the PC though.

Piranha (or I think it was Pirhana lol) is probably my favorite.. especially on the fastest speed leagues it's handling is consistent and good. Better emulate it again :p (yeah, completed phantom on wip3out and classic tracks with piranha apparently, AG system coming second)

Power Stone [DC].

Not as hectic as the second game, tons of fun still.

[EDIT]
Also, Jet Grind Radio [DC].
Need to get used to the controls, but was pretty fun so far.

Amerzone (certain video segments crash, the Smacker ones I believe, so I'll try again after installing the new RAD Game Tools, although stupid Symantec throws up an error when you merely try to download it from the site, and another from the file itself)
Syberia
Sinking Island (can't get to run)

I don't like these games (withholding judgment from Sinking Island, I suppose).

Finally managed to beat Abigail and reached stage 6 for the very first time in Final Fight. Made it to the rooftop and got promptly killed by a rushing fattie, lol.

I still need to improve my tactics with Abigail but I kind of know how to beat him now. Stage 6 is another different beast however, the level is huge and will take a long time to beat. But my 1cc quest continues.

I think I've finally managed to wean myself off Skyrim.

Lately I've been playing Assassin's Creed II on the PC and FFX-2 on PS2, and the odd session of Forza Motorsport 2 on 360.

Slowly but surely, my Wonderboy is making his way through Monsterland. I really like the arcade feel of this game, which demands a 1CC to win, and deducts life if you don't hurry up. Finding out hidden cash spots and deciding how to spend your very limited money supply is pretty cool. I haven't figured out how to kill the grey blobs later in the game very quickly or cleanly yet.. I think I'm missing out on lotsa loot there. Finally made it to the final castle (at least I assume it is, based on how its sequel starts).. getting close.

Rez [DC].
Pretty fun. Sitting right in front of a CRT with earbuds jammed in your head feels really good, really sexy soundtrack.
The more I play it, the more I think the game should have just been bosses, the levels are somewhat long and for the most part devoid of stuff, but the bosses are pretty cool to fight.

Also, in related news, I am liking the DC controller more and more, although the d-pad feels like it does weird shit when I try to play MvC2: I do a QCF motion and my character superjumps... -_-

Rockman World 5 in VBA. I've been playing off and on all day and only have two robot masters left with all special items so far. The old GB Megaman games were really something special when I was a kid, just to have that tried & true gameplay on the go. 5 was strange for breaking the formula of the previous 4 entries by introducing all new robot masters based on the planets called 'Star Droids'. I always really liked space themed adventures when I was a kid so I really dug this one. Gameboy slowdown and flicker are fierce at times, but not game breaking.

I really miss the traditional MM series so I'm very thankful for 9 & 10. Wish they would remake 7 & 8 in the NES style just so the series wouldn't feel disjointed. Would be killer for an update to the anniversary collection.

Are you playing it for score? the normal enemies don't really represent any threat if you just try to kill them fast or use bombs. Still some boring bits though for sure.. Child of Eden is maybe better gameplay wise because of the rhythm scoring system which keeps things intense.

Playing a lot of Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown [XBLA].. just went through the command training for Aoi, there are a huge amount of good techniques I haven't tried yet. time to apply them in practice :3

Yeah, I noticed that when I did a score attack of area 2. Definitely gets more interesting when you wait for them to shoot to increase how much you can lock on.

[also, I wish I had a PS3/360 so I could play VF5... and it's a bloody shame all the people I know are more into Tekken than VF...]

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages last night. Capcom made the graphics and sound rather well there. Technically it may be, to a great extent, copied & pasted from earlier Zelda games, but it's well put together indeed. I feel more inclined to finish it any time soon than to finish Wind Waker (which, last time I checked, told me to seek for a number of Triforce shards - or something like those - all over the sea, and I put it aside for the times when I'll feel like to).
The Tree (you know, the one you have to talk to once in a while in order to progress) is something else...
Released a year before Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. Those were the days for Capcom.

Got Ghost Recon Future Soldier out of the Redbox the other day. I just didn't jive with it, not sure why. Maybe it's because of Vanquish.

I hope you're aware of the fan famicom remakes of 7 & 8 for the PC. If not, you're in for a treat. Better probably than Capcom could've done.

I looked them up last night after I posted and watched some YouTube videos. They look amazing, so I downloaded & extracted them but haven't played yet. I decided to check out the beta of Mega Man Perfect Harmony though, and it looks like it will be really cool as a multiplayer game once it's finished. Right now it feels kind of barren playing alone and still lacks alot of polish. I'm planning to dig in to the two demakes as soon as I'm done organizing my MM folder :)

Lots of Dragon's Dogma while I am feeling ill and off work for a few days. It is really really good! There are some issues that could have been sorted before the game was released and on disk DLC can go fuck itself, but when it comes down to it there is an absolute ton of content and a seriously fun and flexible combat system. The pawn concept is great and the execution is also commendable. I am about 20 hours in and have just moved onto what I think is the seconds half of the game, excluding the post game content that I have been hearing a lot about.

I hope some more japanese developers take note of what From did with Demon/Dark Souls and Capcom have done with this. In fact, I hope that the current crop of Western developers take note too; maybe then we would get some good combat to go with all of the other goodness.

Checked out the Terminator Salvation arcade game. It seemed to be pretty decent from what little I played. I think it would be better without the stationary guns. I kind of just wanted to pick up the gun and aim.

Star Ocean: The Second Story [PS1], just restarted [there is no reason I shouldn't be able to take a single hit from an enemy without dying].

Also, Tales of Destiny [PS1]. Just got past the midpoint, where the game seems like it ends and then more stuff happens.

[EDIT] Omega Boost. Finally was able to beat the stage 5 boss, but stage 6 is kicking my asssssssss.
Also, the more I play this, the more I'm certain that it's the best PS1 game ever. So smooth and tight!

Yessssssssssssssssssssssss I'm gonna nab this one I think.

I wasn't a huge fan of NMH, but this looks like some great over the top hack'n'slash action with a heavy focus on scoring and replayability. A modern home/arcade hit in the making?

Been playing a ton of VF5 Final Showdown over the last few days. I haven't been so hooked on a fighter since the SF4 series, but that might be because pretty much every fighter since then has been mediocre in one way or another... VF5FS on the other hand couldn't be much better.

If anyone wants to play, feel free to add me. East coast is preferred, but I've played people from all over the world and the connection is usually decent enough to get a real match going. I'm not very good, but I've played a few hundred matches now and I feel like I've got a decent handle on my character (Goh).
