Seikai no... is just about the only one military-themed Japanese franchise I can stomach.

That Star Wars clip looked as if it had some rotoscoped stuff (check the storm trooper movements) 8)

yeah not it did I believe and the Tie Fighters were definitely of polygonal origin, I believe they look very good though ;)

I'm watching the final Ariel - yet again throwing beautiful aircraft in front of me withn first minute - the distinctive white nose paint of the Rockwell B1 Lancer :D

So much... camera movement...

It feels like he threw in every 80s animator cliche into one package. And being Otaking, that's of course exactly what he did. Itano circus? Check. Various rapidfire Kanada-style cliches? Check. Overdone shading? Check.

Although, none of those are really bad things, but I can't help but roll my eyes knowing who did it. His coloring also has that extremely cold, flat, and garish look to it that reminds me of modern American animation rather than the 80s anime look he voraciously goes for. And yeah, the Storm Troopers do look weird and blobby, especially in comparison to the style of the rest of the short, they do seem a bit rotoscoped.

Ironically, I'd watch this Star Wars animation any day over Evangina 8)

I like the chara designs for Ariel because it's very late 80s looking; it also had Hayashibara Megumi as a voice actress, so it's got that going for it too. It's outta print now, so probably not easy to find (either in good shape or good price).

yeah they all got that 'scratchy bit under their eyes/on bridge of nose thing' :) - seriously this last one (the spaceship/volcano orbit stop thingy) is brilliant, don't know why it isn't better known, I never heard of it untill I was browsing through the entire Colony Drop website for the 3rd time, and saw an article about it.

This second part (taking over electric grid etc.) is a big and direct Eva influence also, though I don't think you ever made it to that episode ;)

HAHAH absolutely brilliant ending

forcing myself to continue on with 'Gunbuster 2', I have to say when I let myself disassociate my brain from thinking of Gunbuster while watching it, I'm enjoying it in a FLCL type of way, though the constant OTT panty shots and general fan service do grate me. Reuental's voice is in there though which is cool.

It's kinda weird introducing a form of 'newtype' into it too, I don't know yet what I think of that, I'll see what they do with it...

Diebuster is FLCL's sequel. You know, Fraternity, N.O.=Topless.
BTW, Gunbuster was the anime that invented the fan service.

that is probably so, but it is just WAY too much in Gunbuster 2 well for me anyway.

I don't know if I would really agree with that. Go Nagai has been doing it since the 60s.

actually come to think of it - even Gatchaman opening has some gratuitous panty action!

Fan Service doesn't mean just pantyflash. Gainax was the first company who used that terminology.

I'm aware of that but as we were speaking of Gunbuster 2 in which the fan service I was speaking of was blatantly of the tittilation variety, that's why I mentioned panty flashes in Gatchaman

The phrase may have been coined then, but I guess you could call the 60s and 70s fan service as "proto-fan service." I don't know how they got away with Cutey Honey back then. Hell, Josie And The Pussycats gave me... weird feelings when I was a kid 8)

Yeah, especially the manga. Every other panel has some titties it seems.

I watched an episode of cat shit one last night.

Its about a special forces unit made up of bunny rabbits, fighting terrorists which look a bit like kangeroo's. It has a very realistic animation technique. Reminded me of MGS4 on the PS3.

Its very violent and would probably carry a 15/18 rating. I only watched one episode, seemed quite enjoyable. For people not affiliated with Japanese animation that were in the room, it was quite an eye opener.

Finished episode 4 of Gunbuster 2 - very like tbh - Impressed at how there is an unexpected continuity there too

in that something which I thought was just being 'drawn differently' was actually a 'different thing' o_O.

ok call me a sentimental old man, but Jesus the ending of Gunbuster 2 REALLY got to me, I had kinda forgotten about how they were trying to connect the two and then - FUCKIN HELL!!! - literally goosebumps - I can't help it apart from the first 1 and a half episodes, I loved it, full of OTT Gurenn Lagann bullshit freakout physics, the only thing was that I didn't really like any of the characters except for the robot fully.

I don't know, I almost thing the OTT cutesy shit at the start was on purpose or something to make you think it was totally different, but then towards the end it went into that total epic (an overused word I know) Gunbuster feel (IMO).

Anyway seriously that ending just - :o

I've heard that Cutey Honey's always been inexplicably popular with women in Japan, despite the copious amounts of female nudity.

Diebuster last episode is brilliant, all those explosion and special effects, only Gainax can do something like that.
Now go for Gunbuster vs Diebuster, just to watch those extra seconds of animation it has.

watched first episode of The Big O - really liked the general mood, however the mecha itself has to win ugliest robot ever designed hands down, I'd put it as uglier than even that horrible little pointy Qubeley...

but that thing looks ok to me haha - yet again I used the word 'ugly' wrongly - I should have just said 'shit' - it's chest looks like a fire place grill or something - I don't know - I just don't like...

I have to say much as I love anime, it kinda depresses me that when I searched Google Images for 'The Big O' - I actually couldn't see any images of Roy Orbison :(
